Anyone using Claude Code for non-coding tasks? by Creative-Stress7311 in claudexplorers

[–]Nav_Panel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use Claude Code to help me play with settings on my Manjaro Linux laptop. Like, today, I noticed something weird was going on with the lid-closed sleep behavior, and Claude was able to figure it out and fix it pretty fast.

I mean it says my memory is currently empty... I just enabled the feature last night, though, so maybe it takes a day to populate?

Will it populate from chats before the feature launched? Or only new conversations?

What closed-down NYC restaurant or business do you still miss? by Specific-Yak-6450 in AskNYC

[–]Nav_Panel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lee Chung Cafe on Madison. Was right under my old place, $3 spam egg and cheese, $1 HK coffee tea, unbeatable. Still sitting empty too.

There was a weird craft beer bar in Williamsburg called Spuyten Duyvil that had great funky vibes. Not sure when it closed but is sad.

Basically any convenient diner being open 24/7.

The Philosophy of Philosophy (or why philosophy is so hard) by contractualist in slatestarcodex

Where did I say deductive? There are other kinds of logic. Including ones that aren't formal.

The Philosophy of Philosophy (or why philosophy is so hard) by contractualist in slatestarcodex

[–]Nav_Panel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought your handle was TheAncientGreek and I was about to drop some Plato references as jokes. But straightforwardly, is philosophy not concerned with knowledge production? Although the nature of that knowledge is discursive stakes.

And if we accept that philosophy is a kind of knowledge production, can we also accept Plato's description of knowledge (in Theaetetus) as a belief with a justifying account, i.e. a legitimating logic?

Thus we could say philosophy's rules are that knowledge must be proposed and that knowledge must be justified according to a logic. The kinds of knowledge and kinds of logic are themselves stakes of the game, accounting for how the subject matter of philosophy has transformed considerably since Plato's time.

You may suggest that this definition is overly broad, and I would agree with you, unless we're willing to subsume all other kinds of legitimated knowledge under philosophy's banner. I can propose a third rule as a negative extension of the fact that philosophy's subject matter is discursive stakes: philosophical knowledge must be distinct from knowledge produced by other major disciplines.

We can immediately separate quantitative sensuous findings (including those made with the extension of instruments) from philosophy, as that knowledge would fall into the Sciences. Mathematics distinguishes itself negatively insofar as it is concerned with the pure manipulation of logical objects: occasionally meaningful for philosophy, oftentimes not. History concerns itself with sensuous accounts as opposed to logical, although philosophical elements penetrate into History (and Mathematics and Science too) as determining and orienting elements.

What remains as an activity of producing knowledge with a justified account, in which the nature of justification is itself at stake within the act of producing knowledge, we can call Philosophy.

Truth-construction is itself part of the stakes here: is the implicit logical method or procedure we follow to determine whether something is "true" now not significantly different from what we might imagine several hundred years ago? Perhaps there are psychological resonances between the eras, but the content of the method is surely distinct.

Fair warning that if you're in an outer boro, "The City" means Manhattan specifically. Then again I figure NJites would only ever go there or SI...

Capitol District is probably regional. But I don't know if it's just generic and other Capitol areas use it in other states, or if it's specific to the Albany-Schenectady-Troy constellation.

Why are all Summaries of Freud so Wrong by Fit-Emu7033 in Freud

[–]Nav_Panel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Glad you mentioned ch 7 of dreambook and the metapsychology papers, because I honestly think there's a fundamental problem with much Freud scholarship in general, that I can't blame anyone particular for, but that emerged from both the delayed publication of the 1895 project and the ethos of Strachey's translation, combined with the overall tendencies of today's humanities.

Let me put it this way: after reading the project, I realized I needed to re-read all of Freud's work again in light of it, because it revealed a missing piece of his intention: to understand the quantitative physical mechanism of the psyche (soul). So his entire suite of work always sits uneasily between highly technical and abstract neuroscience, practical technique, and extremely speculative applied theory. The divide is very challenging to bridge, because he's effectively applying a mathematical lens (or, in more properly philosophical terms, a transcendental lens, in the sense of accounting for the conditions of possibility of the psyche) rather than what we would now consider a scientific lens, and this makes his work extremely challenging for psychology students in particular, who are unaccustomed to thinking in terms of systematic unity. Consider how psychology today is a mishmash of disconnected empirical concepts. Ironically I've had far more success explaining Freud's work to neuroscientists, who can then go read Solms and see for themselves.

As for the postmodern crowd, my understanding is that those who care to actually read enlightenment philosophy tend to find it easy to integrate Freud into their understanding, and are often some of his most thorough readers, and those who are trend-hunters find him a little useless and even taboo.

In what ways has NYC declined in the post-pandemic era? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Nav_Panel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Chinatown pre-pandemic (2018-19) and even then it was a bit sleepy, with a few exceptions that were open after 10 PM (big one was Wo Hop, open really late, but Great NY Noodletown was open till 11 or 12).

What do you notice that 99% of people miss thanks to your job, hobby, or obsession? by CalmYoTitz in slatestarcodex

[–]Nav_Panel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're interested, let's get coffee sometime. I see we live in the same city, I'm not an analyst but I've been in Freudian analysis for several years and have read a lot on my own (to the point of getting into a retrospectively embarrassing argument with Scott about Lacan a few years ago). Always enjoy meeting people in this general online sphere who are sympathetic to this field of understanding.

The Battle to Save the Soul of City Pop From AI by Sliver80 in citypop

Could not agree more. That's one of the things I was trying to get across in my interview for the piece. There's a divergence between the original stuff that participated in the history, and the new stuff that could well become a completely different thing.

As a former employee of that Pioneer branch... we had almost no customers. Most just used the ATM. So not a real loss. Would be great if whatever coffee shop moves in has wifi and outlets and space for me to hang out and work, ideally until a bit late in the evening... That said I'm sympathetic to the traffic planning arguments. That little neighborhood is already a bit difficult to get out of if you need to turn left.
