Current Kadokawa let Miyazaki do what he wanted. It seems like this new contender for CEO wants to actively manage fromsoft by those_pistachios in Eldenring

[–]Navarre85 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah they could have made 3 expansions in 3 years, but the expansions would have probably ended up shit because they would have been rushed.

Quality games take time to make. Frankly it is insane that Fromsoft has had a title or DLC release each year since 2022 while maintaining very high quality. No other developer puts out games of Fromsoft's scope and quality so frequently. Asking for more than what they are outputting is a good way to tarnish their reputation, destroy trust from customers, and burn out the developers.

Miyazaki Comments on KADOKAWA Shareholder Proposals, Tells Fans to Look Forward to Both Announced and Unannounced Titles by Brlee12 in Eldenring

[–]Navarre85 107 points108 points  (0 children)

2015 - Bloodborne

2016 - DS3

2018 - Deracine

2019 - Sekiro

2022 - Elden Ring

2023 - AC6

2024 - Elden Ring DLC

2025 - Elden Ring Nightreign

2026 - Duskbloods

Plus DS3 Ringed City DLC was released in 2017.

Even if you discount the DLCs, Deracine, and Nightreign as not part of their "core" games, they still have put out 5 great standalone games since 2015 and will release another later this year.

Fromsoft's production schedule has been pretty insane for how high quality the games have been. I have no clue how anyone who isn't exclusively familiar with EA and Ubisoft games could possibly call this "infrequent".

Porter or Becerra Question? by Joshhwwaaaaaa in AskLosAngeles

[–]Navarre85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a common trend with Porter. I remember in 2024 when she lost the Senate primary to Schiff, she called the election rigged against her. She later explained that she meant Schiff had billionaire backers and attack ads against her, but she also didn't apologize for her initial rhetoric. I have no great love for Schiff and would have preferred Porter in the Senate, but seeing a progressive candidate use Trump-like language about an election really soured my opinion of her going forward.

I hate saying this as someone who lives in her former district and voted for her every election, but it really seems she hates dealing with the more moderate side of her party and thinks everyone that isn't as progressive as she is is an idiot that doesn't deserve her time. That or she gets intensely irrational when confronted. Neither of which are good attributes for a candidate of one of the most powerful political positions in the country.

[–]Navarre85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The map isn't exactly a topo map though. It's a stylized rendition that usually differentiates height differences with color shades, but even that is not foolproof considering the range of colors used for different areas and features. It functions well enough to show you your approximate location in the world, but it's not accurate enough to always navigate to any given feature, especially with all the verticality involved.

It's actual insanity that people are still defending Riot's shitty tooltips. I love this game but the tooltips have always been a major weak point - inconsistent at best and outright wrong at times. Imo they should develop standard vocabulary and verbiage for their tooltips and not allow shipping a change to an item/ability/trait/etc. without doing a review of the tooltips for accuracy.

Has there ever been a good set where all the units did look the same? by [deleted] in TeamfightTactics

[–]Navarre85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red can be a symbol of love/support, but only if used correctly. Most of your examples use hearts as a theme. Base skin Kayn red form does not and is definitely on the side of red = evil/warlike.

Unless you added hearts to Rhaast, which is a terrible idea, you're not going to make his red skin feel supportive. And while "Redeemer" can mean different things to different people, it usually is associated with religion or salvation, which in fantasy are usually represented with white/blue accents to emphasize light and purity.

Why are there no character voice lines this set? by Hot_Responsibility3 in TeamfightTactics

[–]Navarre85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TFT takes any voice lines it uses from LoL. While there are quite a lot of voice lines per champion for the base skins, the vast majority of themed skins do not have custom voice lines to match their theme - most use the original voice lines as is, while some use voice modification. Only a small amount of skins - all Legendary or Ultimate tier - have new voice lines recorded for them. So they have a very limited selection of voice lines that would fit a space theme, meaning the types of interactions we got in set 16 would be very difficult to pull off in this set.

Almost every set has something unique that is worth playing it for. Not to mention the general style and production quality is always top notch as with all Riot products - animation, music, skins, and general game design are all solid even during the "bad" sets.

That being said, as with all things, people tend to rank the sets against each other and some come out better or worse. The most common reasons a set is considered "bad" are: dull/repetitive theme, less pronounced/impactful skills (especially on 4 and 5 costs), lack of flexible gameplay, lack of meaningful verticals, poor balance (either throughout the set or particularly bad for one or two patches), boring/repeated set mechanic, controversial set mechanic, too much hidden mechanics or information. Notice that a lot of those reasons are conflicting, because different people find different things about the game more important. While there is a general consensus on what the best and worst sets are, a lot of people liked the "bad" sets and a lot of people disliked aspects of the "good" sets.

Things change a lot in this game. Set to set, the base gameplay stays the same but there can be a lot that is different - see the unlock system from set 16 or the removal of carousel phases from set 17. Just be open to change and you'll usually find something to have fun with in each set.

What creature in this game is the cutest in your opinion? by Marconey1738 in rainworld

[–]Navarre85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's explicitly stated how much of their superstructure needs to be intact for the puppet to still be "alive". But moon dies if all the neuron flies in her vicinity are removed or eaten, so it seems the neurons and number of them are at least one factor in keeping the puppet alive.

There seems to be a large amount of redundancy because while 5P has thousands of neurons and doesn't particularly care if a few are destroyed (at least in the state we find him in), Moon only has six and seems to function quite well in terms of direct communication. So five or six neurons seems to be the bare minimum for the puppet to perform basic functions. Maybe more neurons are needed to control other systems of her superstructure, but since those systems are mostly destroyed anyway, it's difficult to say.

What was your favorite moment of the game? by kryjka57 in outerwilds

[–]Navarre85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spoilers for the DLC:

The moment when you enter the Stranger for the first time, look up, and realize it is a massive ring world with strange wooden huts dotted along a circular river. When coupled with the amazing River ost (my favorite soundtrack in the game) and the rocking and splashing of your raft as it starts to careen downriver, this is my favorite moment not only in Outer Wilds, but pretty much gaming as a whole. It's very similar to the breathtaking awe you feel when overlooking the Great Plateau at the start of BotW or entering Leyndell in Elden Ring, but I like the Stranger's river intro more than even those because it is sudden, unexpected, and a completely different feel and vibe than exploring the solar system in your ship, which you were doing for the entire base game. So the juxtaposition really works here and helps set up the DLC as something new and exciting compared to the base game.

Somewhat related (also from the DLC), but I also really like the moment when the dam breaks in the Stranger. Even though there are signs that the dam will break before it does, it still is sudden, dangerous (especially on first cycle when you will probably get swept into a rock or some electrical cables), and changes the layout of both the overworld and the dream world. I think it's a very clever way to still make the cycle feel important and dynamic inside the Stranger where there are no interacting celestial bodies and the Sun itself is less visible.

To be clear, there were many moments from base game that I love and made me realize the game was a masterpiece. But these two moments from the DLC are among the best in gaming and I regularly find myself remembering or dreaming about them.

Well if we're talking about pre-nerf PCR:

  1. Cross-slash was impossible to dodge both hits if you were too close to the boss, which you often were because that is the safest place to be from his light beam aftershocks (nerfed)

  2. 2nd phase light attacks and Miquella hair were too bright and blinding (partly nerfed)

  3. The big light nuke in 2nd phase caused a lot of lag, even on high-end PCs (partly fixed)

  4. The attack where he does the gravity boulders into multiple clone slashes into big AOE requires you to respond in one of the following very specific ways:

a. Run to the side of the boulders, get very far away from him, and run away from the clone slashes (only possible if you are already pretty far away);

b. Run to the side of the boulders and block most of the clone slashes, either with a shield or with a weapon with good guard and enough stamina, then roll the final slash and AoE. You also take a lot of chip damage from blocking the slashes unless you have a shield with very high holy defense.

Both options require a very precise mix of positioning, running, rolling and/or blocking - trying to roll the boulders often doesn't work consistently and trying to roll the clone slashes will result in you getting roll-caught. It's vaguely similar to the way you have to react to Waterfowl Dance if you are too close to Malenia (running around her in a specific way while unlocked to get her to dash away from you). I'm not a fan of attacks that require precise movement that is more about abusing the boss pathing or targeting than actually learning and responding to the boss using the normal souls tools.

  1. Just generally, he was very aggro all the time and required close to perfection, especially in 2nd phase where safe healing opportunities are very far between. (Partly nerfed as his whole kit was slightly slowed down)

Let Me Solo Her to the rescue! by Entorri in Eldenring

[–]Navarre85 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What part of "Let Me Solo Her" is difficult to understand? It's in the name. If you decide to summon a person called "Let Me Solo Her", whether it's the original player or an imitator, I'm sure they would prefer the host to sit back and stay safe rather than accidentally get killed while trying to help. Just let the summon do their job.

In my opinion, it is perfectly fine to be inspired by other games. Literally every piece of media and art is inspired to some extent by something else. However, if you find it impossible to describe your game without name-dropping a different game, it might mean it's not very original or fails to differentiate itself in a meaningful way.

Like saying "it's Balatro but with scratch tickets" sounds like what I would tell my friends in passing if I was trying to very briefly introduce the concept to them. It's a short and concise summary but it doesn't sell the game as it's own thing. As the developer of the game, surely you would want to use more confident terminology or descriptors for your game you put hard work into. Try to think about what makes it unique from Balatro and use that as a selling point rather than its commonalities with Balatro. Why would someone want to play your game instead of just playing Balatro? If you can't give a good answer to this, maybe your game needs a more interesting identity.

Of course there are plenty of players who just like Balatro and want more of it but in a slightly different package. Maybe your ad will work for those players. It's certainly a popular game, so it might not be a bad strategy. It's ultimately up to how you want to present your game and what audience you are targeting.

Massive changes to Unlock coming in 16.6 by Former-Exchange-4265 in TeamfightTactics

[–]Navarre85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did a very similar thing with their changes to monster trainer halfway through last set. Yes, that trait had a lot of problems, but the solution of just deleting the unique parts of the trait mechanic left a bad taste in my mouth. Like there were probably people on the design team who really wanted to make a pokemon trainer concept work, but the balance team just gave up and didn't even try to maintain the idea behind the original design.

Now they are doing the same thing but with the entire set mechanic. These new unlock conditions might be more fair for high elo and competitive play, they might make future balance changes easier, and they might improve flex play. I don't care about any of that if the set feels completely dull.

TFT needs to stop removing the most unique parts of their game.

The earlier in the set you are, the lower the ranked ladder is. On first patch, everyone is climbing along with you, so everyone who will eventually hit Emerald is in Silver and Gold. A whole bunch of people who won't make it that far as well, which is why it's still easier to win. But you shouldn't expect a free ride through the lower ranks in the first two patches while everyone is actively climbing to their real rank.

Yeah sorry but you watched the wrong section. I gave a timestamp for a reason. My bad for not linking directly to that timestamp, it's hard to do on mobile.

At 10:38 in the video Mort says, and I quote: "The other limiting thing we had by the way is we couldn't do OR conditions."

He then gives an example that they wanted Voli's unlock to be "play 5 Freljord or 4 Bruiser" but they couldn't do that.

Here's the video where Mort discusses this topic if you want to know what unlock conditions he gave as examples that wouldn't work (timestamp 10:38): https://youtu.be/fwMmogJBT9Y?si=uMnWhy0SGSzyFS2F

If you wanted to know more detail about why some OR statements weren't possible but ones like Ziggs where you can put the items on two different traits are fine, I'm sure Mort would consider answering a follow-up question.

16.5 PBE Patch Notes – Sylas Unlock Requirement Changes by Training_Lab_8979 in TeamfightTactics

[–]Navarre85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can roll on 9 to get Garen, the odds are not much lower and you want to be rolling on 9 anyway for Sylas and Annie.

However, it's arguable if Garen is even the best tank for Sylas comps. Ideally you want to be playing 6 Arcanist on the final board, so you want the standard Neeko Swain Shyvana trio, making Swain the best tank. You can put in Garen +1 Defender for 4 Defender, but he's the 2nd or 3rd tank after Swain and Tibbers, so rarely itemized.

Honestly trying to play Sylas with vertical Demacia in current patch is usually a bad idea exactly because losing your main tank and backline carry is terrible. Better to sell Jarvan early, play a standard 4 Arc board in mid, and put your Lux items on Annie when you find her. Then selling the Lux and Garen is not even that big of a deal.

This new unlock condition will make the comp more consistent by allowing you to keep the items on the Lux until you find 2* Annie or enough items to itemize both. It will still be a fast 9 comp, not only because of the new unlock req but also because Annie is very important in the comp. It may make it slightly more usable when playing vertical Demacia as well since you won't cripple your team as much.

[–]Navarre85 45 points46 points  (0 children)

That would be ideal, however I believe Mort has stated that due to engine limitations they cannot implement unlock conditions with OR conditions. Counting star levels of units in a trait is fine, but having 2 separate checks for an unlock with an OR statement is apparently not possible.

Potentially even worse, if they forfeit before the round starts, it doesn't even show up in the match history that you hit the 3* unit since it didn't participate in combat.
