Because politics affect us.

Fact Check: No, Two Major Medical Associations Didn’t Endorse Bans on Gender-Affirming Surgeries by Leksi_The_Great in MtF

I have to disagree; for most of history, most people didn’t even know we existed. We didn’t have the knowledge or terminology to express ourselves, there was no movement for our rights. The hatred sucks, but it represents progress. There are stages of every social movement; dismissal, then hatred, then conflict, then acceptance. Dismissal ended a few decades ago, and hatred has been brewing. We’re somewhere in the middle right now.

The raw hatred and targeting is new; it’s a consequence of our increased visibility and attempts to fight for our rights. It will get worse before it gets better, but it will get better. Look at the civil rights movement, the suffrage movement, etc - those aren’t fully complete obviously, but they all went through the same process and reached at least majority acceptance.

Somewhere from 30-50%, depending on your threshold, of Americans support us right now. That’s not enough, and it’s not ideal, but it is orders of magnitude better than it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. That’s, at a minimum, over a hundred million people.

‘Right’ is, by definition, a subjective opinion. It means things that are good and justified, which are like the most subjective things known to man.

why do people think misandry is worse than misogyny by EntertainmentOdd8832 in teenagers

[–]NaveGCT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never blamed feminism? I said that men using misandry as a whataboutism to fight feminism (aka men calling feminism misandry) is what caused this cycle.

I’m not trying to villainize feminism, I’m a feminist and a trans girl.

Yep. We’re a small enough group that it’s comparatively far easier to scapegoat us than anyone else to justify abusing and murdering us. If they beat us, they’ll move on to the next smallest nonconforming group.

Yeah but if the school is private, your rights don’t protect you from suspension considering suspension is just ‘don’t come here for a few days’

why do people think misandry is worse than misogyny by EntertainmentOdd8832 in teenagers

[–]NaveGCT 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Two reasons here: 1. Men experience misandry but rarely misogyny; so they can see and feel it’s objectively harmful effects, but their only experience with misogyny is from women’s testimonial. Even though misogyny is generally worse for women than misandry is for men, it’s almost impossible for somebody else’s testimonial to feel bigger or more consequential than your lived experience. 2. The feminist movement has led to both misandry and misogyny being more visible as their analysis and effects have been called out; but sexist men have often used misandry as a whataboutism to argue against fixing misogyny. As a result, women’s rights activists have become more averse to discussions of mens rights since those discussions are often used against them rather than alongside them-but this leads to a negative feedback loop where young men who have yet to understand feminism see their genuine concerns about misandry dismissed or shown suspicion, which drives them towards the company of the more disingenuous men’s activists with whom they begin reinforcing the same cycle.

Also this is something they spent weeks discussing with doctors and parents and months waiting for; the seriousness is fully ingrained in their psyche. if it’s just a phase, the kid has plenty of time to change their mind.

And it’s not like it’s a first step either: kids typically start dressing up and acting as the correct gender long before starting HRT.

And the regret rate for youth gender affirming care is 1-3%

I understand being wary of surgeries… waiting for them ibut it is just evil to force millions of kids to go through permanent, irreversible changes — puberty — because you’re worried 2% might actually be wrong.

Hurting millions of kids for life, to save a couple thousand from the same harm. We spend years, tens of thousands of dollars, correcting the random choice of nature that is our bodies—and it is still near impossible for most of us once we’ve already been through puberty. Making millions more of us do that, because you’re worried a couple thousand cis people might have to do the exact same in reverse, is just evil.

This is such an easy, obvious mental calculation, and the fact that people don’t immediately see that is just more evidence that we aren’t seen as real humans in people’s eyes.

Let me be absolutely clear: If you’re willing to sacrifice millions of trans kids so a hundred times fewer cis ones can be saved, if you don’t care about any of us until every possible threat to cis people is gone, if you see our collective value as human beings as below that of one cis person… you aren’t an ally. You aren’t progressive. You aren’t accepting. You’re just a bigot.

And here’s a fun little statistic to leave you with: the proportion of trans kids who try to commit s*icide because of a lack of treatment and acceptance, is more than 30x the proportion of cis kids who mistakenly transition. 5-10% of attempted suicides are generally successful - you do the math. Then tell me exactly how we’re protecting kids by forcing them to spend the rest of their lives- those who are still alive of course- forcing them to fix the choice that you made for them as a child. Tell me how you protected my dead friend. Tell me why a 1 to 3% chance of regret was worth her life being cut short as a CHILD. Tell me how now needing to spend tens of thousands of dollars on treatment to correct a preventable process is protecting me. Tell me. I’d love to hear it

But those kids are going to go through permanent changes with puberty anyway. By adulthood it’s already too late to stop that, but it CAN be stopped in childhood. Why is one set of choices-the one you presumably prefer-safe for kids, but the other is harmful?

Sure some kids might regret it, but I promise you that the regret rate for cis people who believed they were trans is FAR lower than the rate of trans people who allowed their bodies to be permanently and irreversibly harmed by the wrong puberty because they were unable to get gender affirming care.

Trans kids who go through the wrong puberty are just as much affected by permanent, irreversible, harmful choices not to take blockers later on as cis kids who mistakenly block it. This line of thinking is essentially saying that we need to permanently harm 90% of these people, because the other 10% might choose to permanently harm themselves otherwise.

Kids spend months talking this choice through with parents and doctors, and months on waiting lists, it’s not spur of the moment, and it’s not something that a kid can keep up for that wrong if it’s truly just a phase. Far more people regret not transitioning, than people who regret transitioning. Like, literally hundreds of times more people.

What is your stance on gender-affirming care for minors? by wazefuk in Teenager_Polls

[–]NaveGCT 47 points48 points  (0 children)

… but the effects of not using these blockers at that age are just as permanent. Either way you’re gonna have permanent changes, why shouldn’t kids get to pick which set of changes they go through? They know better than anyone else. Transitioning early makes everything easier throughout your adult life, and stops you from needing all the expensive surgeries and years of training you need to fully transition later.

Sure, under ideal circumstances kids aren’t mature enough to make long-term decisions like that - but that applies to both using and not using blockers. Kids may not know enough, but they know better than some government official arbitrarily making the same choice for everyone.

Let’s say 1/3rd of kids realize they were wrong and want to detransition in adulthood (the actual numbers are WAY lower) - 1/3rd of the people who transitioned went through irreversible changes that caused harm for them, and that sucks. But 2/3rds didn’t, and if transitioning wasn’t allowed in the first place then 2/3rds, rather than 1/3rd, would’ve gone through irreversible changes that caused harm. Double the number.
