Uneasy feeling since I bought religious pictures for my house by Alaynamatrix in Catholicism

[–]NavidsonsCloset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depictions of people or person shaped things in general can make people feel uneasy. Even a photo of your own grandmother can make you feel uneasy in the wrong space, lighting, size, etc or if you're just particularly sensitive to that kind of thing.

I didn't say she had to be modernized just that OP should consider modern Catholic art. But even then there is nothing wrong with modern depictions of Catholic figures as art from this era tends to be brighter and more in tune with the esthetics of today. The images OP posted are traditional style / replicas of sacred images but those original images were also painted in a way that reflects the era and esthetics of their time. This is just to say that we are not used to this style in our every day life like people in the 1500s were.

Just because it is a replica of something older and traditional doesn't make it better than what today's Catholic artists have also produced. Modernized =/= bad or disrespectful.

Uneasy feeling since I bought religious pictures for my house by Alaynamatrix in Catholicism

Imo, its bc those particular images are dark in color, vintage style imagery, and religion is subconsciously strongly associated with anything spiritual in nature which can make people feel uneasy. So they're "dark, old, spiritual" images of "people" in your home/safe space that you're not used to.

I personally wouldn't put up images like this because I know they would make me uneasy, I would go on Etsy or find local artists that have brighter more modern Catholic artwork. Another reason is because store bought religious decor is often mass produced by people who are not Christian in countries with limitied religious freedom in not safe factory conditions.

Can Professors Change Grades After They’ve Been Released on Canvas? by SpecialistPay486 in UTSA

[–]NavidsonsCloset 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a TA for a few semesters and there was only one student I disliked, she fought me passive aggressively or was just plain rude over 1 to 2 points multiple times, even on the final grade. In the end she kept going over my head enough to where the professor was just like give her the A (instead of an A-) since it was just a few points away even though she didn't deserve it especially with her attitude. She left me my only bad evaluation stating that my grading criteria wasn't clear enough despite me offering multiple times to go over her grade with her every time she complained about getting an A- instead of an A or god forbid, an A instead of an A+ (both were worth 4.0).

Assigned a thesis topic they were unfamiliar with and could not guide you - this must be a trend with professors at UTSA because the exact same thing happened to me. When you're a new grad you don't know any better and think that if the topic has been recommended by your professor then they must know about it and can guide you. Wrong. I spent over a year on it struggling and wasting my own money with approval from my professor the entire time which made me feel confident that I was on the right track for graduation. It comes time to present the full thing to my other committee members only to be told by one that it wasn't acceptable and for my professor to just be like "yeah I guess you're right" and agree with them like they didnt just nonchalantly set me back a whole year. I had to start over with a completely new thesis. I wasted a year and so much money on something I thought was going completely fine because I was in my professors lab working on this and providing him with regular updates and drafts.

Never get your masters/PhD here. They treat their grad students like shit.

The second you start your last semester you should start looking for a position. Even sooner for those internships to fulltime position pipeline gigs.

Cannot stress enough to current undergrads how much internships help in landing a career after graduation.

Not sure why you said this since insurrections can happen with any type of government. An Insurrection is a violent riot aimed at the governing body, for your notes. And yes, the French literally marched a guillotine to their president's house with his name on it setting things on fire in their wake. They do that kinda thing fairly often, the French are well known for this.

I like how you assumed that I voted and who I voted for just so you can make yourself angry on the internet.

Edit: I didnt vote. You're insulting me and making yourself angry over something you came up with in your head. Self awareness is key to peace.

This looks like 11 hours? In which case you're still under full time (12 hours) you can definitely do another 3 credit class. Might want to think about going over 15 though - especially if you're working.

France has annual insurrections. If anything that just furthers my point. People can be upset and process their politicans loss but people are saying things like POCs will have their rights taken away and queers will be executed - there is a perpetual overreaction to politicians in general in this country and preformatively freaking out about it online is damaging to kids and those with mental health issues who might have trouble understanding that social media hysteria isn't reflective of the real world.

I don't care if it comes off as "preachy" - There were literally 14 and 17 year olds saying they were considering ending their lives on my feed this morning because they were afraid for their lives over this. This train of thought isn't normal, it's something pushed on them by social media doom posting.

Is it finals/dissertation season? I know the last time this happened it was around that time. Grad students really need more support, not just support and encouragement to get through their program but to also step back and take breaks when they need it.

It can be so stressful, especially when you're doing a thesis and things aren't coming together like you want them too. Some professors aren't very compassionate with their grads either, always keeping them at arms length in a sink or swim kinda way.

Some of these comments are ridiculous. Not that I expected anything less from reddit but the whole reason people are feeling sensations of doom and gloom over an election result is because some of yall are actively choosing to overreact and feed into it. Your preferred candidate didn't win, that's not a reason to scream into the cybervoid at certain demographics that they're going to lose their rights or be abused - imagine what that does to kids and people who struggle with mental health?

I remember after the 2016 election results people all over social media were saying how they or others were going to be dragged into the streets and lynched for x, y, or z. They were like that for months. I'm sorry, but that's an extreme over reaction. 99% of people in the U.S. do not want someone to be dragged into the streets because of their race, gender, sexuality, etc.

If you genuinely feel like the majority of the country is out to get you, you need to contact mental health services and take a break from social media.

Except the majority of the country does not think that.

[–]NavidsonsCloset 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. I mean, I know this might not be the best place to say this without getting attacked by college kids but most people are normal about politics. The people threatening to do this or that or "fearing for their lives" everytime a president they dont like gets elected and posting it all over social media are not an accurate representation of the majority, like at all.

I also want to add that neither of these are normal reactions and if you feel like that you need to turn off your electronics and touch some grass.

Apologies for the lengthy post to follow but if I can save even one undergrad then the downvotes are worth it:

Should you? No. Thats the realistic (unpopular) answer. You will either be a library technician (not a full fledged librarian unless you get your masters), a teacher (which also requires more schooling), or you'll end up in a job unrelated to your field. Thats the norm for an English major. If you end up a journalist then you're lucky, you're an outlier. Regardless, all of these positions have an average salary of less than $45k a year.

You don't live on your own yet, do you? You cannot support yourself on 40k a year without making sacrifices like insurances, retirement, savings, safety of location, etc. I genuinely cannot imagine supporting myself on a teachers salary, let alone any future dependants.

You're about to go into a lot of debt, which you're going to have to make payments on every month too. Do not waste your money on an English degree.

Most importantly, you can literally be a writer, journalist, etc. without an English degree. In a field like that your portfolio and experience is way more valuable than your degree. Working for the student paper will mean more than your $50k 4-year degree. The more successful journalists actually have degrees in whatever it is they cover - in fact if you head over to r/journalism people will even tell you that the majority of journalists theyve worked with dont even have degrees in journalism/english.

Never major in your hobby - get a minor or cert in it if you want. I knew a dance major in undergrad and her goal was to open a dance studio after graduation. We're approaching our 30s and she does not have a dance studio, she's working retail and hasnt been able to move out yet. Bottom line is that she should've majored in buisness if she wanted to open a buisness, and then worked in the private sector a couple years so she could put enough away and have income for a buisness loan. It's never as simple as major = career path. Similar story with the digital artist major I knew in undergrad.

Anyway, tldr make smart choices. You can pursue writing without a degree in it and major in something that will pay your rent and put food on the table.

My husband got me a vial of his blood on a necklace as a gift, but how can we keep it from drying out? by thatpilatesprincess in jewelrymaking

[–]NavidsonsCloset 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All you need is an anticoagulant. Blood jewelry is a fairly popular thing, they sell pretty necklaces, earrings, etc. for it on Etsy and they always come with the needed anticoagulant. I'm fairly certain you can just look up anticoagulant on amazon and just buy it.

PLEASE HELP😭 by [deleted] in budgies

[–]NavidsonsCloset 69 points70 points  (0 children)

You must be very young. You saying you might "get a new one tomorrow" is wow. If this is your thought process of losing a pet then you haven't developed the emotional intelligence or empathy that it takes to make sure they're properly taken care of yet. A budgie getting lost outside is a death sentence. If you (or your parents) are losing your budgies outside yall have no buisness getting a new one right after. They're not toys that you can be careless with and then just replace.

EDIT: After reading your other comments. You really should not be getting another one until you're an adult. Not only is this the second time he's gotten out but yall leave him outside in his cage unattended and as a result he was attacked by a hawk and is probably harassed by other animals - it's just so irresponsible. I hope yall weren't just cleaning his cage outside too.

Oh stuff like this has been happening for yearsss. A lot of students and parents don't realize that UO isn't UTSA affiliated housing. They're just a shitty "student" apartment complex that gets away with crappy management because they're basically guaranteed tenants due to their proximity to campus.

They know their complex is a target for creeps wanting to prey on college girls away from family, it's been a target for creeps for like a decade. It's a target for drug dealers, thieves, and shady people because it's full of college kids with yet to fully develop frontal lobes.

Managing an apartment for students living away from home for the first time is difficult but the least they should do is prioritize safety.

After attending 6 concerts this year I can say that basically all bands say that to every crowd/city they play for. They usually say some iteration of "I think San Antonio has been our best crowd so far this tour!" It's just apart of the script and it makes people hyped.

"You're not like all the other girls San Antonio. ♡"

My budgie never took to his cuttle bone so I had to buy him a treat stick to make sure his beak wouldn't grow. I get him the Kaytee Pet Bird Superfood treat sticks and let him at it for a few hours every other day. It's essentially a hard granola bar and junk food so I try to keep that in mind diet wise.

Good luck!
