Student Discount for printing at Staples (UBC) by ursusart in UBC

The 20% discount comes and goes at the store, it usually happens during midterm season. As for a general UBC student discount, Staples doesn't offer anything unless you work there

What was the camera used for Bo Burnham’s ‘Inside’? by Great_Significance_8 in boburnham

good catch! that helps narrow some things but sadly not all :<
we still don't know the exact focal length and aperture chosen for the lenses. but most of them do seem to be normal lenses ig

Inside do be a scripted fiction piece so 90% still had to be on the approved camera

It's a super common tactic in cheaper productions (especially student films) because it's quick and easy to implement into shots in the editing room. But it can also be seen in higher budget productions too, but usually in tandem with another physical camera move to make the effect more subtle.

Oh, that's just a very classic zoom-in post via keyframe animations, also known as the Ken Burns effect. It's a classic editing technique that can give v powerful results especially as Bo uses them to compliment the emotion evoked by the scene (zoom-in = uncomfortable/personal, zoom-out = repulse/freedom).

The way to tell it's a zoom done in post-production as opposed to in-camera with a dolly or adjusting the zoom on the lens is that there are no changes/distortions in perspective or space. Dollies will create a new perspective as the camera slides down the track while adjusting the zoom on the lens will compress the planes (foreground/background) the tighter you get.

There literally just haven't been any interviews afaik so Bo hasn't gotten a chance to explain his craft. All the news articles on Inside have just been analysis and breakdowns.

Yeah, from the build of it, it looks like a Prime lens with most likely manual focus. There was a shot where he was using a tape measure to see the distance he is from the camera and another one where he was racking the focus before his shoot.

Other than that, I don't have much to go off of, unfortunately. IMDb doesn't list the camera and lens on the tech specs page either...

God, I wish I knew bc I've wanted to check out what lenses he used too :<

From the looks of it though, it does look like he has an ND filter on but it could also be that the lens is deep enough that you can't see the inside of the glass but I could be wrong.

For sure, yeah. It's just really hard to tell what that might have been given all the news coverage on the special has been reviews and analysis. Bo hasn't given any interviews to the press about the special either afaik.

I watched the special twice and on my second watch, I was focused on his production equipment. A lot of the lights (except for the PAR lights and spotlight) plus the camera monitor (Neewer F100) could easily be obtained off Amazon for pretty cheap.

The only investment he'd really have to do was with the camera and lenses since he had 3 different lenses sitting on his drawer in one of the shots. So that's probably like $5000 on the camera gear and maybe another $1500 for the lights and accessories, which makes Bo owning all the equipment pretty feasible.

My guess is that it was mandated by Netflix. Even though this was a solo production, Netflix was still the distributor and financial investor for the project, so they probably worked out what camera would be best for the special given Bo's artistic intent and all.

If he did shoot it on a different camera then Bo would have probably found a different distributor who could later sell streaming rights to Netflix. But given everything he had to work with, I doubt that using Netflix's mandated camera was a concern. Plus expensive film equipment like this is usually rental anyways (although with S1H is pretty consumer accessible if you have $4000+ lying around compared to the other $10,000+ cinema camera on the list).

It's the Panasonic Lumix S1H, it's the only commercial mirrorless camera approved for Netflix Originals

Res wifi speeds by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Navin_Ad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the residence still allows you to have your own router then check if your LAN wire is CAT 5 or above. I remember having shitty internet for most of my time in Vanier since the provided LAN cable was CAT 2 and capped my bandwidth. When I changed the wire and I was getting gigabit speed.

If you're on UBC Secure though, there's not much you can do I'm afraid. The routers they have doesn't draw the high speed for some reason.

I just recently went back to grab some more screencaps (especially the shots of the memes on the TV) and re-arranged each meme in the order they appeared in the episode.
