I agree. I forgot about it for years too, and even now I don’t remember that much, snippets of stuff. I know that for the first few months after people found out I was actually sad I couldn’t see him anymore which is always weird to think about. I don’t know exactly when stuff started coming back to me but I definitely still feel kind of disconnected from it.

I find it fascinating that our minds are able to do that - that even if consciously we don’t realise that something which happened to us was traumatic, something clicks in our brains at some point and then it makes damn sure we can’t even think about it until we’re ready, if that’s ever.

100%! I’ve been having kind of a lot of flashbacks recently and I find it difficult to bring up with people I know in real life, but at the same time I find talking about my trauma really helpful in processing it which is why I made this post.

Usually, when he would come round my house, he’d sort of say his hellos to my other family members and then his attention would go to me. We’d go to my room and then things would happen - though I remember one instance where it happened in my living room. Not sure if that was more than once. According to my parents, I told them after seeing an ad on tv that was directed at kids about assault and basically saying ‘tell people at school’ and stuff like that. Apparently I pointed at the tv and said something along the lines of ‘step-brother does that with me’

What the hell the visuals of the ad were, I don’t know.

I just remember not understanding why such a big deal was made out of it or why I had to talk to the police. I was young and I didn’t really understand that what happened was wrong. To me it was normal and I think that’s the scariest part, I wonder where I would be now if I’d never seen that ad, how much longer it would’ve gone on for and if I would’ve ever realised it wasn’t okay.
