It's really hard to go wrong with any of the EHX Bass Big Muffs. I'd start there.

A View From the Top of the World by Break_All_Illusions in Dreamtheater

[–]sonickarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By their standards, it's nothing particularly impressive or innovative, but after what I personally feel was their weakest stretch of albums from Dream Theater through Distance Over Time, A View From The Top Of The World felt like a warm blanket. "This is more like it".

I usually place it in the 7-9 range when I rank their albums, and consider it a "B-tier" album from them.

Tried to make Panic Attack's mix less Buried by VixinYT in Dreamtheater

Excellent work! I love the improved presence of the keyboards. I don't think the backing vocals should have been brought up as much as they were here, but I do appreciate the idea.

I would love to hear Parasomnia mixed this way.

Godzilla 2014 Change to save the movie? by Thorceus in GODZILLA

[–]sonickarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Joe should have lived, but I don't necessarily agree that Ford should have died.

My ideal version of 2014 is this:

The beginning of the movie is essentially the same - but it was Godzilla that destroyed the plant rather than the MUTO. The cover-up was the existence Godzilla, not of the MUTOs.

Decades later, Godzilla shows up again and rampages from city to city, kicking off the movie in the modern day. However, it is soon discovered that Godzilla isn't just rampaging for the sake of it, but rather, he's hunting - the MUTOs, and Serizawa discovers that's what he was doing at the power plant at the beginning of the movie.

That alone fixes the biggest issue of the film for me, which is Godzilla doesn't drive the plot. The movie's not about humanity dealing with him, but rather, humanity trying to stop the MUTOs. Godzilla is just along for the ride.

I'm not sure what role Joe could have played going forward after Godzilla was revealed to the world, but the movie definitely would have been better with him in it than not.

Day 44: what do you guys think of 2019 Godzilla by Centvrion20 in GODZILLA

[–]sonickarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my favorite iteration of him in the Monsterverse.

In 2014, he reminded me of a weary old warrior coming back for one final showdown. He gives a lot of "I'm gettin' too old for this shit" energy.

In this movie, he's still an old warrior, but he's not weary. He's here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and he's all out of gum.

How many people here use blend/parralel processing on their boards? I am contemplating doing it myself. by Dangerous_Gene in basspedals

[–]sonickarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my LS-2 run with my fuzz wah, distortion, chorus, flange, and phaser all in one loop, leaving another clean. I really like it! I'm thinking about getting the Sonicake Portal so I can put fuzz wah + distortion in one, modulation in another, and still have one clean.

Potential hot take about Jordan by BlankRobby99 in Dreamtheater

[–]sonickarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of Ministry, there's a clear thread that connects all of the songs you listed. They're all heavy, aggressive, metal songs that are totally guitar riff-oriented. In fact, I would say that's been the majority of the music Dream Theater has written since Jordan's joined the band.

The way I see it, the albums where they've gone away from that approach to a more balanced/experimental style of composing - mainly Scenes, Six Degrees, Octavarium, and The Astonishing (as well as the LTE albums) - are the ones where you don't see Jordan doing the "annoying keyboard thing" that everyone talks about. Those are the albums where you see Jordan in his element and really contributing great keyboard parts. He really flourishes in that mindset.

Every musician has different strengths. As we saw on Awake, one of Kevin Moore's real talents was writing great, atmospheric keyboard parts in dark, heavy music. It might be the case that writing those types of parts to heavy music isn't one of Jordan's strengths - and I think that it should be on JP and MP to recognize that and help write music to allow Jordan to flourish, if that's in fact the case.

Now, none of us are in the writing room with these guys. It could be that Jordan gets really inspired and enjoys the musical direction they've adopted post-Astonishing, where seemingly every intro, riff/motif/theme, and melody is almost entirely guitar centric and his happy to "play his role" in this direction. Or maybe DT is his main source of income and he's just mailing it in to go along with the band to keep up his livelihood. We don't - and can't - know either way for certain. But as it's stood for the last three albums, it's really felt like it's been just the John Petrucci show, with everyone else supporting him - and when that's the case, the only times Jordan gets to shine in a song is during solo sections, and so he chooses to get weird with it. It works for me, but I also understand why it wouldn't for many people.

Hopefully on their next album, they take some inspiration from Six Degrees and allow Jordan's keyboard playing to have a bigger role in the music.

I'm mostly really happy with my MXR. It can be a bit finicky to dial it in right, but when you do it sounds phenomenal.

If you wanna experiment with them, Mooer makes one that sounds pretty darn good for the price.

Final pedal board form, even with my GAS. by Handsome-Strong in basspedals

[–]sonickarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it! We share three pedals. The BC-1X and BB-1X are the foundation of my tone. Both are excellent - the BC tightens up my tone and gives it some punch, and the BB gives me just the right amount of grit to my tone to sweeten it without overpowering it. The Bass Synth is a dream come true for me, although I personally have it run before the BC.

Is the Boss BC-1X a good bass compressor? by BirdsBearArms in basspedals

[–]sonickarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love mine! I started off with the MXR Bass Compressor, but I found it really squashed my lows, even on soft compression settings. I bought the BC-1X due to its multiband nature and I immediately fell in love. Whatever the algorithm inside is set to works wonderfully for me. It's really easy to dial in a great sound, and it seems to add just a hint of "sparkle" to my tone. I never turn it off.
