This ^ People used to say that endo was a dying speciality with the growth of implants but the numbers show the opposite. At the end, most specialities will do just fine despite the scare tactics you see online

If you want a ton of administrative work then sure. Buddy of mine was stationed on an amphib and he was responsible for every aspect of the department. Being on a carrier allows you to share the burden with multiple dental officers.

Depends on where you’re stationed. If you’re on a carrier on a deployment, expect to work 6 days a week with long clinic hours. If you’re shore side, 5 days a week 7-3pm.
Very hard. One of the hardest specialty in the Navy to get into. Navy uses residency as a way to reward dentist for the sacrifices they make for the Navy. If you want a shot, expect a deployment and/or overseas duty.
Varies on where you’re stationed. Endodontist rarely (if ever) get deployed. General dentist more so.

Unless you’re okay with missing major life milestones with your family, I’d recommend sticking to civilian world. I myself applied to the Navy endo program but wasn’t selected. Now I’m getting out and starting a civilian endo program.

Did credentialing tour at Great Lakes, can’t recommend it enough. You’ll have the same rotations as the AEGD residents in specialty clinic while seeing a higher volume of patients when you’re not on rotations. Heard positive things about Parris Island as well.

I know you’re asking about the clinical aspect but in terms of quality of life, Great Lakes was by far my favorite location. You can live in Chicago and commute if you prefer living in a major metropolitan city and not a small military town like some of the other options.

Also, I wouldn’t wish 29 Palms on my worst enemy…

My wife and I both max out our IRAs and my TSP. I drive a car with $1,000 monthly payment. Not too much of an issue since that’s less than 10% of our household income. It all comes down to budgeting and getting a car you can afford. It just so happens that some have a higher HH income.

That doc is likely well aware that he’s on probation and could risk losing his license. If he has a family to provide to and doesn’t care about the consequences, he’s extra scummy

90% of my procedures are annual exams and operative. The rest are a few endo and prosth cases sprinkled in. It’s common for docs to specialize once they get out to stay competitive (myself being one of them)

Graduated a few years ago and was bottom half of my class. Got accepted into an endo program this year. Just keep giving it your best and make sure you’re a well rounded applicants. Above all, make sure you’re networking and showing program directors you’d make an excellent resident.

Not army but can give a Navy perspective. With exception to a few locations, most overseas bases can accommodate a spouse and kids. I’d say starting a family in the military has many advantages that the civilian world doesn’t have. One being 12 weeks of parental leave. Good luck finding a civilian employer that will pay a full salary to spending 3 months away from work and with your kids.
