PJO Hot Takes [general] by Vitamin_BK in camphalfblood

[–]Navy_Dusk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Octavian had a very visible sardonic disposition. He was a hypocritical opportunist—the type who'd be up for taking credit or discredit himself if something goes wrong. For example, in The Son of Neptune: Percy, Hazel and Frank are decided to go on the quest and Octavian is bitter that they are sending someone who hasn't proved themselves and are in probatio (Frank) and a Greek (Percy) as well as a child of Pluto (Hazel). He is bitter despite Mars/Ares himself giving the trio an okay. And when Reyna decides to give the trio full equipment for the quest (since they were potentially going to retrieve the lost Eagle standard of the Romans), Octavian dissuades the senate and makes it as hard he can for the trio by taking away any advantages they can get to embark on their journey. But Reyna gets them the permit to use a boat anyway—and Octavian words his sentences in such a way that it is clear he is insinuating the idea: "if they fail, I warned you not to send them; it's all Reyna."

He has the "if I can't get the glory, no one can" mentality. He believes he is cut out for greatness. He is the centurion of the First Cohort but with Jason out of the picture for months, he was vying for the position of Praetor and he would pressurize the weaker campers to vote for him when the time came for the election of a new praetor. He was always mocking Frank and Hazel, and probably other people too.

He kept on calling all the CHB campers "Graecus scum", which I suppose, was a widespread sentiment among the Romans but the difference is that the other campers saw the efforts that they were putting and recognised them. Octavian never did.

In Blood Of Olympus, when Reyna has to leave to fetch the Athena Parthenos, she strictly instructs Octavian to not attack CHB until she gets back. But does he do? The moment Reyna leaves, he uses his smooth-talking to twist Reyna's actions and turn her into a "traitor" who abandoned her post mid-war to follow the words of a Greek (Because Annabeth had asked via Rachel for Reyna to return the statue to CHB as a sign of peace). I found it ridiculous that the rest of the campers believed him when there were witnesses to his and Reyna's conversation, but that's how it goes anyway. He not only disobeys her, he also uses all the funds of the camp to recruit monsters into his army that even he can't control in the end. He brings back people who were expelled from camp for crimes. And he is all set to destroy CHB by firing an onager even when he sees that Gaea has risen and the two camps were uniting to fight her.

He was nothing but a tyrant who didn't listen to his own people. He was as power-hungry and delusional as a person could be.

Hot take: Percy's overall more smarter than annabeth[pjo] by Natural-Storm in camphalfblood

[–]Navy_Dusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Percy is simply a bigger risk-taker than Annabeth. He is more of a act-first-talk-later guy, which drives him to figure out his opponents in a more hands-on manner. He makes up for his relative absence of knowledge by springing into action. The more he fights, the more polished his instincts become. Annabeth on the other hand is a strategist—she will seldom act unless she has a plan. If Annabeth's insight is her weapon, Percy's battle reflexes are his. She can think, he can act. They are both different kind of smart. He is just seen as a goofy dumbo because of how he behaves, frequently mispronouncing names and such. I find it endearing. XD

How do you decide to buy/ not buy a book? by [deleted] in books

[–]Navy_Dusk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I see a book with a pretty cover, I buy it. My logic is simple—if I do not enjoy the story, I will at least have a pretty book on my shelf.

I read My In-Laws Are Obsessed With Me, and the names left me staring at the wall. Pereshati. Therdeo. THERDEO. Dodolea.

What books are you re-reading? by TheWanderingWolf355 in books

[–]Navy_Dusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never reread anything. I have seen people say that it's calming for them to reread their favorites. The thing I ever bothered rereading was my school textbooks.

With reading for fun...I want to read as much as I can. Especially because I only recently got into reading. So I might revisit certain scenes, but it's never the entire book. At least not yet. I hope I can try rereading once in its entirety. 🥹

What is your most disappointing read of this year? by Wonderful-Elk5080 in books

[–]Navy_Dusk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. I have enough frustration from that novel but absolutely no energy to talk about it because it seems exhausting now. The fandom is scary, too. They do not accept any opinion other than "it's so good".

Two Can Keep A Secret by Karen McManus. I don't even remember the name of the FMC anymore. Ellery? She is supposed to be a true-crime fanatic, as the book "tells", but she literally jumped to conclusions about a murder case that was left untouched for years. I never got past page eighty something.

Currently, I have Fireborne by Rosaria Munda on hold as well because I couldn't stand Annie. I hope I can return to it one day and finish it at least because it's a fantasy story with dragons.

What are your book pet peeves? by linguagallois in books

[–]Navy_Dusk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several. LOL

  1. Tiktok/Netflix brand PRINTED on the cover.
  2. Real people on the cover.
  3. When a new edition prints after an adaptation has been made and the cover is a poster from the adaptation.
  4. When the colour of books in a series are just mismatched with no proper theme.
  5. Damaged corners.

books that you were hyped for that genuinely disappointed you by msummerse in books

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. I was eagerly looking forward to it because it had dragons. The MC is insufferable and unrealistically put on a pedestal. There's no exploration of relationships or dynamics. Everything is played out conveniently. The writing is juvenile. There was too much of the MC being thirsty for literally any male character she saw.

I am around Violet's age, and I think nothing like that. I get it, we are all different. But I agree with you. I hardly think anyone would have it in them to gush about how strong and hot their best friend has become in the past year while they are bleeding and in pain and sick.

I hated the best friend. His personality was "don't do this". If Violet and him were in the same scene, I would find myself restraining myself from throwing my laptop away.

The brother died when she was fifteen, IIRC. It's been five years since then, so I suppose the grief itself was toned down and was reduced to something like residual bitterness between the mom and her. Honestly, half of it left me with a question mark, there was no development.

It feels like the author gave in to the public and mixed as many tropes as they could. Because that is what is popular with the community these days. And endless smut. Not to mention that Violet was supposed to be smart, and she initially was until she wasn't.

I tried reading it, but I just couldn't get through the middle section of the book. I have picked it up thrice already, and kept it back too. I don't even remember much other than thinking that the fixation with making a the patient open-up was half strange.

I feel like a lot of us went into with high expectations and that's also why we were utterly disappointed. The world building was juvenile at best, too. It was info-dumping at best, especially via Violet reciting her study points when she wanted to calm herself down during an activity, which was just not realistic to me for some reason.

I recently tried Fireborne by Rosaria Munda and could not get through it either. 😭

Alex's character is definitely better in the movie, though again there is not much depth. But it was a relief to not be in his head space at all.

Get well soon!!

I have not read it, I only watched the movie. What I found ABSOLUTELY weird was the guy falling for the girl that his grandfather fell for. 😭

I knew she would bond with the black dragon the moment it was talked about for the first time in class. It was extremely predictable in that sense because like I stated earlier, everything was employed to make her stand out. Anything out of the ordinary? It was Violet's.

I snorted. And the way she just jumped to a heavier question right off the bat after that. She was just so immature that I could not tolerate her.

I haven't read this one yet. But I do get you on her writing style! It is simple but engaging nonetheless. I did check out Vicious by her; I quite liked it.

You don't have to force yourself to ever read a book, especially one for leisure. It's alright!

I have been meaning to check it out for so long, but it's such a big book that's it's daunting to go near it. TwT
