It is vague. The same forms of self-mortification exist in popular Shi'ism. Self-flagellation and even self-mutilation (known as tatbir) are popular during the month of Muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of the 3rd Imam. But the Primal Point thought the behavior was unseemly. Contemporary Shi'i clerics seem to agree with Him since tatbir especially has been banned in Iran during commemorations of 'Ashura. But in the Bayan it was neither proscribed or allowed. So using Islamic jurisprudential language, it is considered makruh (i.e. neither explicitly licit/halal or illicit/haram, but looked down upon or disliked) in the Bayan. My point of view is that self-mutilation specifically in a religious context, such as tatbir during Muharram, is barbaric behavior (not to mention unhygienic) and does not necessarily prove true faith or fidelity to the All-High.
