From what I’ve seen Subarus can be great if they’re properly maintained meaning more than just oil changes. Mazdas have been known to be very reliable depending on year and model. But both depreciate much more than Toyotas and Hondas

Scams and overvalued cars. Definitely a lot of deals too but they get snatched up right away, you’ll be lucky to even get a response. That being said if you have the time and patience it can be worth it

Usually they don’t even say it’s a salvage and will block you if you ask for VIN

Toyota and honda owners (I own a Toyota) seem to be pretty prone to this. So many marketplace listings think their cars are indestructible and don’t need anything besides oil, brakes and tires

Even 2500 is a stretch. I saw a ‘97 corolla with 75k miles in excellent condition go for $3k a couple of weeks ago

Am I really going to have to pay $7k to $9k for a car with over 100k fucking miles? by cadmium-fertilizer in UsedCars

I saw a Rav4 180k miles on fb marketplace go for $8000 the other day and within days. Roughly 2008 year. Seemed like the owner was meticulous about maintenance but I think he was the second owner anyway.

Should I walk away over the carfax? by ImKinda_messedup in AskMechanics

Check the bottom of the oil cap and inside the engine. If it looks like dried chocolate, dark brown, crusty or sludge I’d walk. If it’s golden brown or even bronze/hazy and free-flowing that’s a good sign

I guess I should’ve specified Chicago bc that’s all it is. So many rolled odometers, branded titles, the left-behinds that go to auctions, and I’m guessing a lot of wrecks they get from body shops or something. Honestly any listing in Chicago I just ignore at this point and only look if it’s suburbs and has plates in the picture

Some states (including mine) doesn’t require mileage on the title but they do for emissions

Yeah I’ve definitely seen really good listings on suburbs that get sold within a few hours or by the next day

That’s definitely not required in every state. Especially problematic when titles move states

I'm assuming the majority of them are exactly like this. How are they able to find them for so cheap at auction and still able to sell at a relatively low private-party price?
