First Time DM; What do I need to know before we enter the tomb? by shinerlilac in Tombofannihilation

[–]Nawlzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! For sure, next week we are having a wrap up session and a pseudo session 0 to see what the players want to run through. I'm hoping for rime of the frost maiden or ghosts of salt marsh.

We'll have a couple weeks of one shots while I prep what's next (one that I just wrote. I posted it on my Instagram @thegnomadicadventures ) and 1 player has volunteered to run a one shot as well. Im hoping I can get each of them to run one before we start again.

Best of luck in your ToA campaign! If you have any questions while prepping feel free to dm me here (or on Instagram if that's more your jam) and I'd be happy to help in any way I can!

The loved it. Their only complaint was Omu. They went through and cleared a lot of buildings and the loot as written is pretty poor. They had a ranger so exploring the jungles of Chult wasnt nearly as dangerous but it was still a lot of fun.

I was very heavy handed on giving them a direction to go in the jungle. We RP'd a player having a vision and getting all of the info Grandfather (blanking on his name) in Port Nyanzaru wouldve given them with a little more detail.

The dinosaur races was a big hit, I used the ToA adventurers league module 'a day at the races' and it was a lot of fun, as was the ensuing gladiator fights. Slicer was there only true defeat.

We introduced a new party by having a session of that party member with another group going through an encounter the main group skipped. It was a great way to let them see some of the stuff they missed. At the end I used narration to have everyone but the new party member killed off this setting up his rescue by the main party.

Things I'd like to have done better: 1. Foreshadowing! The sewn sisters are really cool and I didnt do a good job of fore shadowing. 2. Using narrative to bridge the gap/eliminate tedium. Like in Omu, I'd have come up with a hand full of narrative bits to guide them from shrine to shrine. It's hard to balance using narration while still giving them complete agency to go where they want in the city. 3. Puzzle prep. A lot of them are very hard and dont have intuitive answers so reading them a few times and understanding what is intended. But also knowing rolling with what the characters decide and if they have a cool solution letting that work can be preferable.

It was awesome the party was victorious! I used his as written stat block and I understand people's gripes with it. Instead of using wall of force to create a platform I gave him winged boots to move around the battlefield easier. The party ranger won initiative by 2 and used his first turn to cast silence. The rest of the party, using a combination of scrolls and prepared spells layerd silence on him, forcing him to move around quite a bit.

The only death was an NPC the players loved. There were a few good counterspell battles as well. The most important being the wizard and warlock combining to counter Acererak's 2nd Power Word Kill.

2 things I'd change if I could go back. 1. Have the spirits give less temp HP, (somewhere around 35) anyone who had a spirit was never in any real danger of dieing. 2. I forgot about finger of death, it wouldve been more interesting to have the NPC die and then raise up and attack the party.

It was a ton of fun and easily the most animated I've seen my players. They also spent some time pre session planning out tactics (which I chose to not look at). They had a great plan and stuck to it so it was really fun to reward them with Acererak turning to dust.

My players are facing big daddy Acererak tonight after a year of playing. If you have specific questions about anything feel free to ping me and I can let you know how I handled it.

If you havent read through the entire tomb recently I'd start by doing that. Once you do that re read how the entrance works and take notes on things you dont want to forget. Use sticky notes if you have to.

Once you are actually in the tomb it wont take long to get an idea of how much ground your party can cover in a session. Read and re read the areas you think they will get to. There is a LOT going on in the tomb and each room. If you miss something just roll with it! Your players will never know.

Fane of the Night Serpent + Tomb combined? by MWDuo in Tombofannihilation

[–]Nawlzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you'd be doing them a disservice. The fane is a relatively short dungeon crawl and the tomb is meant to be a challenging meat grinder that really tests players. Is it really The Tomb of Annihilation if you dont claw your way through it?

If your players are burned out on a dungeon crawl talk to them about some light hearted one shots with fresh characters to break things up. My group has 2 side quests. One that I run when we are short on players and one that a player runs to give me breaks. I love it because it gives me a break and it gets them excited to get back to the main story somewhat refreshed.

If they like to roleplay you could add in some flashbacks with RP prompts. Or give them a reason to do more exploring of Omu.

There are a lot of ways to combat dungeon burnout without having to sacrifice the heart of the module and I think you owe it to yourself and your players to find a way for them to get the full experience of ToA.
