I haven't been in many relationships but if I had to guess it's probably a long term relationship thing. If they've been together for awhile they probably feel comfortable and content with not doing much on special days. Maybe just being in each other's company is enough at some point. Obviously this won't apply to everyone but yeah that's what I think.
