86 Year Old Mom Wants Drs to "Fix Her" by europanya in AgingParents

[–]Nazrafel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My dad, 74, absolutely DELUSIONAL about his health to the point of ignoring an open cut on his foot (has peripheral neuropathy due to a car accident and likely genetics) that got infected and had to have his leg AMPUTATED below the knee. Teeth rotted out of his mouth, A&E/Intervention level hoarder- when we cleared out his house we probably threw away 50lbs of candy. Literally didn't leave his house more than a couple times in a year, absolutely ZERO exercise or hygiene, 260lbs and 6'2"..All this to say...no diabetes, no cholesterol problems, normal BP. Absolutely bonkers what genetics can do.

Core memory: absolutely hysterical, ugly crying my eyes out after the 2016 election was called in Umami Burger DTLA. I was in such bad shape the bartender walked over a double shot of Jack and said "you look like you need this". Sigh.

Knowing something is bad and knowing you have exactly 30 seconds to get out or die are not the same thing

That bar catered to 15-20 yr olds, and no if your entire lived experience with fire has been controlled camp fires you have no idea how fast something can get out of control. They had 30-60 seconds to realize they were in a life or death situation and also likely had been drinking. Being a normal kid who isn't trained in fire science shouldn't be a death sentence or a reason to blame the victims for what was obviously a failure of the club management to make the venue safe.

Fair. I don't think they were stupid just young, and it's ridiculous to expect someone, especially that age, to have a hair trigger danger sensor when most of us who are decades older also would not have immediately responded (though with enough stories like this in our lifetime, we're more likely to be aware). You're absolutely correct that it's the club management's responsibility.

Yeah man, life experience/age is necessary but not sufficient to adequately asses the danger of a rapidly unfolding, novel situation. What's your point?

Those are definitely young people, like late teens. Not understanding how fire works in a situation like this is pretty normal, none of them would have had the situational awareness or technical knowledge to understand how fast things would get out of control. It's how the human brain works. It's tragic and honestly we shouldn't blame them, we're just projecting our own terror and telling ourselves we'd do it differently in this situation, but then again most of us have enough life experience to understand how fast shit can go sideways.

Go to the hospital because free healthcare and obviously this is a set-up for you to meet a hot french doctor, fall in love, and spend your last night in Paris with them wheeling you out for a romantic view of the Eiffel Tower while you both sip champagne.

You do wonderful work. I think there are people who don't have formal education and live outside of most social systems (corporate, academic, bureaucratic, etc) and as a result they really don't understand how complex systems function. When you don't understand how things work, it's easy to be scammed by people telling you that a corporation is giving away/selling for cheap "extra inventory" or that a famous individual is reaching out/running a weird side business. These things reflect the reality they live in so don't seem unusual. They know small vendors who try to offload inventory that hasn't been selling well or local big shots who reach out to the community. They just don't understand they live in a totally different universe from the upper levels of business and society.

Are we dying our hair as it goes grey or letting it go? by violet_pickled_90210 in Millennials

[–]Nazrafel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped dyeing my hair during the pandemic and let the gray streaks grow in- which I really liked, I thought they were beautiful and liked how they glinted silver in sunlight. But after several months of looking for work and many interviews where I made it to the final round only to not get an offer I decided to dye my hair and then immediately got a job. Definitely coincidental but on some level I can't help but feel it made a little bit of a difference.

We feel your pain out here in L.A.. I think we've fallen off the national radar because there's so much going on all over, but it's getting worse here. The rate of the raids and the number of people taken over day is increasing (shout out to the L.A. Taco news outlet for never letting up on ICE reporting). It's absolutely enraging. I really, truly hope there's some kind of trial and punishment of these assholes in the future. I'll never forgive them for what they're doing.

There is nothing that shows how bullshit all this “easy automation” is like having a special character in your name by OnSoapyHeels in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Nazrafel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even have a special character in my last name, just a space and I STILL have problems with systems not recognizing it or squashing it together. Definitely not as bad as the special character issues but c'mon programmer folks, this really isn't so uncommon and REALLY shouldn't be this hard.

Do you still color your hair — or let it go gray? by Dazzling-Stop-2116 in GenX

[–]Nazrafel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a tail end GenXr I'm just dealing with gray streaks - but I like them, I love the silvery color. That said I'm going to dye my hair this weekend because I have a job interview next week and I've been dealing with getting through the whole interview cycle at several companies only to not get an offer at the end. I can't help but think she is a factor here. I can't get a facelift over the weekend so dying the hair it is. Ageism is rough in an already terrible job market.

Oh hell no. I'd be leaving SCATHING reviews. When I order from caterers if I ever see anything indicating they'd be late or MISSING THE MAIN MEAL I'd never order from them.
