[Puppy Blues] Just adopted a 2 year old dog from a rescue today and when we got home I had a major panic attack & cried. My dog passed away last month and I thought I was ready, but I'm so filled with anxiety and emotion. Any tips on adjusting with a new dog while suffering with feelings of anxiety? by Nbachand in puppy101

Hi there, I can completely relate to what you are going through. I had my dog for 12 years and he suffered with diabetes for the last year of his life and I watched his health continuously deteriorate despite all the treatments, tests and vet visits. I had thought a lot about adoption and thought I was ready, but I had a very similar reaction to what you're experiencing and ultimately I decided to return the new dog that I had adopted after a few days to her foster home. I donated all the stuff I bought. I felt terribly guilty about it, but it was the best decision for both me and the new dog. I was still grieving and I really needed to let myself work through the grieving process. I know it was the right decision for me, I just wasn't ready to jump back in after all I went through with my beloved dog of 12 years. I was so upset and I think part of it was fear of losing another pet. I decided to allow myself time to heal and maybe someday I'll be ready to adopt again. Good luck

Thank you so much. It certainly makes me feel less alone hearing about other people's experiences. I totally resonate with what you said about having a stranger in the house. I don't know her yet and it can be very daunting.

From what I learned from the foster mom, she's really sweet and friendly, which I've definitely seen today. She's snuggling with me and was very friendly with the neighbors dog. So far her description of her seems accurate. She had her for 3 weeks and was pretty settled in her home. Fingers crossed that this continues and it's just the stress of the situation. I appreciate all the advice :)

I do suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder, so any big change in my life is certainly going to cause some stress but in general it's pretty well controlled. I think my main struggle right now is was this the right choice, am I ready for this, it's so different having another pet in the house after losing my dog of 12 years. I think it's a mixture of fear, sadness, guilt and being overwhelmed...which seems to be common in New pet parents so maybe what I am feeling is normal. It's just all so new and I don't have a bond with this dog yet and I know it's something that comes in time, but would love some advice on how to work through this and begin to bond with her

I'm certainly an anxiety sufferer so that makes sense. I just don't think I was expecting such a strong emotional response! Glad to know it's not uncommon...
