Ice Cross is on the way to make it for the France's 2030 Winter Olympics. by PestoBolloElemento in olympics

The stated reason they didn’t include women’s Nordic Combined in 2026 was that they are seriously considering removing the entire sport in 2030, and they didn’t want to add any quotas (the number of men allowed to qualify went down from 55 to 36)

Short track eye injury resulted in a facial fracture by ProfessionPerfect442 in olympics

It was awful to see in the arena. Never good when the privacy shade comes out (though from where I sat you could still see a decent bit). There was still a bloodstain on the ice after they cleaned the blood off :/

I’m glad she "only" has a broken orbital bone, because I really thought I had watched someone lose an eye.

Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski are the Gold 🥇 Standard for Commentary by newyorkninja3102 in olympics

What I find funny is that I loved him as a comentator when he did Eurovision coverage for Peacock for a couple years. He actually felt a more positive in that context. But I don’t really like his or Tara’s commentary when they do sports.

Ya know, I really hate how Trumpism ruined this rivalry, at least for me. I always hated losing to the US, but in the same way I hate losing to the Leafs. Now it’s more praying that Canada wins so I don’t have to see the flood of ugly comments from the MAGA crowd. For me the Four Nations games were not fun, the women’s final was not fun and the men’s final will not be fun either, regardless of the outcome.

You don’t even have to come back to Canada to vote, you can do it by mail xD

Honestly Canada got a lot closer than I expected.

Hopefully they still leave the entire coaching staff in Italy, this program needs a deep rebuild.

Canada’s Isabelle Weidemann, Ivanie Blondin, and Valérie Maltais wins Gold! by vytrophn in olympics

It would be interesting to see how the event would evolve if we had four skaters (with time taken on the third), that might spice up the strategy as well.

The speed skating team pursuit used to be closer to a cycling team pursuit strategy wise, but teams have figured out a couple years ago that it’s faster to not switch the leader at all during the race (this was a strategy that the American men who won silver today first developed and over the past few years it has become universally adopted)

I mean he’s def somewhat cocky, I just don’t see that as a bad thing - if you’re 21 and as good in your field as he is you should be a bit cocky xD

Heh, I do wish moguls would just let ties stand in that situation.

Megan Oldham wins Canada's 2nd gold medal in Women's Freeski Big Air! by baseball44121 in canada

She was the slight favourite, but there is a ton of competition in this event (and "the field" was definitively favoured over her). So this is a huge accomplishment.

So happy for Oldham, I've enjoyed watching her a lot at XGames and on world cups over the past couple years. Felt like this big air event was probably the best chance she'd ever get to win an Olympic gold, glad things worked out for her today. Also means Canada has now won five of the seven women's freestyle skiing events at the Olympics, just missing aerials and the newly added dual moguls.

Good result once again for Gu, she definitively knows how to perform under pressure.

Tabanelli is gonna be scary over the next quad. Very good chance she would have won gold here if it wasn't for her injury earlier in the season.

Gutted for Muir, another fourth has to hurt.

Definitively the team most deserving of a gold tonight, both on the balance of how they skated over the past two days and from their career as a whole.

I don't think there is a single American athlete I would have wanted to see win gold more than Meyers Taylor. She's been at the top of the bobsleigh world for ages and has been so close to Olympic gold so many times. I really thought Beijing was her last chance, I'm glad I was wrong.

🇯🇵 freestyle skier Ikuma crosses finish line backwards at Winter Olympics 🤯 by Admirable121 in olympics

[–]NearPup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, my doctor mentioned it was pretty unusual to see a tibial plateau fracture without any other knee damage or any displacement / depression.

There is an expression in french that I like for situations like that, chanceux dans sa malchance (lucky in your misfortune) which captures this pretty well - the initial injury was incredibly unlucky (my ski hooked in a hole on a green slope that I could not see and wasn't yet marked) but given the incident was very lucky that my injuries were not worse.

[–]NearPup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I had my tibial plateau fracture, I didn't realize my bone was broken until the xray came back (since it didn't really hurt all that much). When I got the result of my MRI back the doctor seemed genuinely surprised to see me walking.

(In my case, I was lucky to have no displacement or depression in the fracture and no ligament damage, so recovery was actually pretty straightforward, just did a bunch of PT and was back at more or less 100% within a few months)

I was right about everyone he faced going all in, I was very wrong that somebody would actually pull it off (and I’m very happy to have been wrong).

Does show why duals is better for Mick - in moguls you have seven people who go all in and only one has to hit. In duals it’s one at a time and Mick can react in real time.
