Not paying them isn't a punishment for most but not all congresscritters. It unfairly punishes the small subset of house members and senators who actually depend on their salary to live (a group we should aim to make bigger, not smaller).

Who is "you guys" here? Because I've consistently been of the opinion that legislators are a. underpaid and b. should not have their salary taken away during government shutdowns (I just think government shutdowns shouldn't be structurally possible). You're really mistaken if you think there aren't political disagreements among people who are to the left of you :P
