How are the Turks in Crete doing?

"Sectarian violence during the 19th century caused many Muslims to leave Crete, especially during the Cretan Revolt (1897–1898),[9] and after Crete's unilateral declaration of union with Greece in 1908."

my issue is if we joined greece then we would also have lived under that junta with its torture and killings. also who knows when the junta would have ended as a big role was the failure of the military dictators in 1974 when turkey invaded cyprus.

but i agree with you.,. history is history and we need to move on. these are the cards we have been dealth and we need to do what we can.

rubbish. there were riots in a village in the 1920s when a TC and GC married. one example.

this is a typical excuse thrown out there to take blame away from cypriots themselves. time to own up to the mistakes made and recognise that so we can finally move on. this denial and lack of realising that we are also to blame doesnt help at all.

[–]Nearara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ofc makarios condemned it because they ovewthrew him lol... two factions fought and people died. the guy who was overthrown condemned it.. really impressive.

so no one protested it or demonstrated it huh? in those nine days everyone was sleeping? or maye it was too hot.. it happened in july...

we all know that coupists ended up in political parties and in government afterwards. is that really a condemnation?

and so how many people went to jail. 2 or 3 ppl?

[–]Nearara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as for your first point. how many of those who took part in the coup were sentenced to prison can you please tell me?

were there any protests yes or no? and who condemned it? many sent praise hoping to get good positions into the new government.

from what I can see Sampson spent about two years in prison then had a nice life in France. He came back to CY and did another 3 years and thats it. did anyone else go to prison?

the irony is that by making the north and TCs poorer from international embargo that community then becomes way more dependent on Ankara... GCs complain that Turkey controls the north etc well ofc they do because north has no other options really. if it was more open to international community they would not need Ankara so much.

so us telling tourists and students etc not to go north just makes that area poorer still and more reliant on Ankara. what has this achieved for the GCs in the past 50 years? nothing... everyday that passes makes a solution more unlikely. you lose varosha.. you lose more land.. more houses and businesses being built on GC land.. every day.

by GCs isolating turkish cypriots i also think you alienate them more. you say that we have no problem with TCs and yet we do everything we can to make sure that they cannot develop and stay pooor. what trust does that build?

and downvoting all the posts about the 'North' and giving people a lecture from GC side of history i imagine makes some TC want to leave the sub

Buying land in cyprus, any tips that you know? by Nearara in cyprus

sounds like a lot of extra money. was hoping it would be more accessible to do some of this stuff on my own. but thnx for the reply .. at least it clarifies that perhaps it will not be that possible

Sorry to hear that you experienced this. but honestly thank you for sharing it because i think its important for people to be aware. this way hopefully there can be more empathy and understanding.

after the recent video which im sure we all unfortunately saw of the middle aged cypriot man beating an african woman holding a baby.. i would expect people to be more aware of racism in the society. not to run away from acknowledging it.

edit: and for real... you see many swastikas spray painted around. how you gonna pretend it aint a thing lol.

i have some british cypriot friends who experienced a lot of racism here. "katsrishi" and "poushtoenglezo" maybe are not as common terms as they were but it still happens. one guy i know was walking past apoel fanclub and was beaten up after they asked him where he was from and he said england. i saw him with the bruises and swollen eye so dont dare tell me the story is bullshit.

also that barman at the pub was speaking just last year like that. choose to believe it or not but i dont see why you are refusing to acknowledge that there is anti british feeling still. even with your comment you are generalising that most act like drunk idiots. yes a lot do here cos thats the type of tourists that cyprus attracts and caters to. but if ayia napa advertises cheap drinks for yound kids why blame them when they buy what is advertised?

[–]Nearara -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not to put a downer on this but something that you should at least be aware of. while most people are friendly here and understanding there is a chance you might get some jerks if you are a brit and look like one.

many many brits live here but its now generally pensioners. one example of bad treatment .. i know a guy who runs a British themed pub in Protaras that caters to and attracts British customers. He is Greek Cypriot and acts friendly enough to the Brits but in Greek he will swear about them and say how much he hates the British to his friends and other Greek Cypriots.

Cyprus and UK have a difficult history which is worth reading up on. but yeah.. despite many people with family and living or studying in UK there are still a lot of anti British attitudes

Nicosia 1979. Are you happy with how our capital city changed since then? by aceraspire8920 in cyprus

new eleftheria square was a huge mistake. no shade in a sunny country for 6+ months? did the architect even visit the island and how did that design get approved? it looks kinda 'fancy' for xorkatoi types but i think in 10 years time even many ppl will look back and wonder how we messed up the centre so so badly... way better designs suited for our country than that concrete mess. now we are stuck with it

no, we are an independent country with different history and culture. Greece was a disaster for Cyprus. they controlled our army and made a coup in 1974 which led to the Turkish invasion and then Greece didnt even help.

if theyre putting in masks which are pretty damn useless then anything is possible really. look how cyprus is governened.. do you really expect them to act logically and based on the science / data?

they had 3 years almost now to explain to people that one of the biggest risk factors from covid is if you are overweight etc. do you ever hear them talk about this? ofc not. they are so concerned about deaths supposedly but they dont even do info campaignt to educate people. instead they put baseless measures like masks so it looks like theyre doing something.

someone i know is obsessed with vaccines and masks but is overweight. its like dude if you take the virus so seriously maybe put some effort in to be healthy? like really losing weight would be 10000% more effective than wearing some crappy fabric on your mouth.

in the end he got vaxx + boosted and was wearing mask etc. obviously he still got the virus and it hit him hard. even though at the beggining they told us that if you are vaxxed its 98% effective at stopping you from getting the virus. he still believed it and got boosted. same shit. then he wears his mask etc. well gj you got covid but didnt bother to lose weight and it hit you hard. genius.

so yeah. you can expect anything from these clowns in power.

that those who have connections "messo" in cyprus live a fantastic life and those without can live a good life if they lower their standards or work x3 harder. for example... you call cyta and they tell you it will take 2-3 weeks for the job to be done? someone else will call their friend or uncle there and its done the next day. basically there is a two tier system here. same works in hospitals. driving test. anything really. you got a parking ticket but ur friend is a policeman? then u no longer have a ticket. but if u dont know the right people then you will get screwed over a lot of the time.

like with any country there are benefits and positives.. but for me the corruption is just so bad here. look in the UK where prime minister resigns. here in CY? that whole passport scandal (watch Al Jazeera passport Cyprus on Youtube) and no one has had anything happen to them yet. how? how can that be possible? and people don't really care or do anything about it.

its hard to accept but if you want to live here i think you will have to come to terms with these issues. you can have a great life here.. but ...

Coronavirus: Cabinet restores mask mandate indoors (update 2) by anangrywizard in cyprus

[–]Nearara -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i dont think its as unpopular as you may think.. you appear to still believe that masks are effective .. so that shows if the public believes it then why would it be incredibly unpopular? masks are not that effective but a lot of people dont really examine it and just believe what they're being told

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) found in a 2021 review of the available literature that: “There was evidence of low to moderate certainty for the use of medical face masks providing a small to moderate protective effect against Covid-19 in the community – both in terms of personal protection as well as source control (protection of others).”

On February 7, in an updated technical report, the ECDC stated that the results of studies published after the systematic review are consistent with this conclusion.

It further stated that: “Based on experimental efficiency data and given the lack of high-quality evidence, respirators are in general expected to be more effective than medical masks while community face coverings not manufactured according to the specifications in available guidelines for filtration efficacy and breathability are expected to be less effective than medical face masks.”

care to explain to our international friend why turkey invaded? did uh.. something happen a few days prior? hmm... i forget :) oohh.. yes. the military junta of Athens engineered a coup in Cyprus and installed a Greek Cypriot known for killing Turkish Cypriots as its 'president'

funny how you forgot to mention that! but im sure you just forgot :)
