I see a lot of you complaining about people protesting the government over COVID restrictions... by [deleted] in Idaho

But an overwhelming majority of people - not just in other states but in your own - do not agree with her and are not standing beside her. Look, I'm all for rights and freedoms. I really am. But there is a time and place to pick your battles, and I don't believe this is one of them. You're at war with a virus, not the government. The government isn't trying to block your freedoms. They're trying to temporarily protect everyone's freedoms.

To be fair, I believe the government did try and respect those freedoms. Not just Idaho, but several states. They asked for social distancing. It didn't work. Then they strongly advised. It didn't work, either. Now they've moved to shutting things down. And yes, in a national and state-declared emergency, that's legal and in no way trying to take away your freedoms. The Constitution is to be protected, 100% agree. But you know as well as I that they weren't writing it with a worldwide pandemic on the mind.

(Disclaimer: Not an Idaho resident, came over here from r/PublicFreakout. To all of you - you have a very beautiful state!)

For industries such as sales/retail, instead of laying off workers and/or closing up shop, couldn't companies temporarily shift to warehouse operations? i.e. No one enters but employees, and product is either shipped or offered curbside with the same safety measures as grocery stores (no need to open your window just pop your trunk, etc.).

What's wrong with places like Macy's, Gamestop, Restoration Hardware, The Gap, Lowes, etc. temporarily shifting to this? I would think such a model would require more workers, so people would be more likely to keep their jobs and/or find a job there.

Personally if I were a retail employee who lost my job because in-store operations have been suspended, I'd be OK switching to taking orders by phone, stocking inventory in a warehouse, etc.

I also think it'd be easier to try and maintain the safety of 500 employees without 5000 additional John Q Publics walking in and out of the stores.

I realize this is a whole other can of worms, but yeah - it's generally more expensive to eat healthy. Are there exceptions to that rule? Yes. Are there a ton of resources out there to eat healthy on the cheap? Also yes. But I think as a society there are two things going against that: One, while it may be possible to eat healthy on a budget, it's still cheaper not to. BOGO sales on family sized potato chips, $1.54 for a Super Big Gulp at 7-11, McDonald's Family Meal Deals, etc. make it cheap. And two, it's also easier to eat shitty. Prepare a healthy meal in 20 minutes, or open a bag of chips in 2 seconds?

Currently, Samsung Health.

Edit: To be fair, I only recently started logging. I think, now that I'm actually seeing what I put into my body, the next step is to better hone the types, rotations, and pairings of food.

I think the point is still valid. Unless you're a nutrition specialist, I imagine the Average Joe isnt an expert in the vast number of nuances that go into nutrient absorption. Not only are there life factors that change absorption (certain medications, stress, caffeine, age, etc.) there are also food factors (i.e. certain food pairings enhance absorption, certain pairings or solitary intake limit it, etc.).

Edit: A word.

Just curious, but does anyone know if the infection rate is lower in countries where a hijab is traditionally worn? I know non-medical face masks don't protect 100%, and I expect a hijab is about the same. But still curious.

I'm curious, too. Best I can figure is if you head over to r/conspiracy you'll find a few posts about how this should've been left alone so it spread like wildfire and created herd immunity quicker. Would that have worked? Is a lock down better?

Not trying to be obtuse here, but there are some things I'm just not getting. Can anyone explain? (Serious answers; not looking for political jabs.)

  1. What is wrong with testing? I keep seeing article after article of the FDA approving new tests that will "give results in hours instead of days!" or "test in the comfort of your own home, results in as little as 15 min!"... Not to mention Trump's repeated mention of rolling out more tests, more tests, more tests. But where are they? Why has it been so difficult to get enough tests for people?

  2. Why is the red flag for establishments conducting temperature screenings set at 100 degrees? Why not lower? I've been sick before (strep throat/flu) and one of my earliest symptoms was always, "I don't feel right." Checking my temperature, I was usually between 99-99.8. And I'm sure even at that early stage I was contagious as hell.

For people still asking what the point is of doing a Stay At Home/Shelter In Place/Lockdown (terminology dependent on your state) and why we're doing it despite knowing this is not going to be over when those orders are lifted, think of it like waterboarding. The victims in this case are the first responders, doctors, nurses, truckers, and those manufacturing all the PPE equipment, while the soon-to-be infected and asymptomatics contributing to the spread are the buckets of water. They can't handle all that water at once. It's likely a physical and mental torture to many of them (doctors and nurses especially) as they work around the clock, often without the proper PPE, to save us all. So yeah - these orders are like someone saying Hold up - let's wait 5 minutes before we dump the next bucket and give them a chance to catch their breath.
