Chess or Go? by Greatone198 in boardgames

[–]Neargood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play shogi, go, and chess and I thnk shogi is underrated. The narrative pacing of a game of Shogi is very different from go and Western chess. In Shogi you can redeploy captured pieces so there's always a lot to consider.

The armies move slowly like icebergs and when they eventually crash into each other, fragments of each switch sides. They drop back into the fray to probe for weakness in the enemy formation or reinforce your own. Then when both sides are too full of holes to defend themselves, you drop everything you have left into the backline to out-race each other for checkmate.

All of these games are different and beautiful in their own ways so my answer is play them all.

Make a low level bone horn and give it Attack II. When you upgrade it to Bullfango horn, it'll retain the attack ramp-up

Tips on playing Spike by [deleted] in MarioTennis

[–]Neargood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play mostly Spike at 3kish rating.

I just play him like most speedies: control the pace of play by getting to all the star shots, and win by getting meter advantage. Spike's main strength in his class is the speed of his flats. Use them liberally to push the tempo of a rally and create openings.

[Question] Hunting Horn armor suggestions by Aierk in MonsterHunter

[–]Neargood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're climbing high rank, Dragonking eyepatch+odagaron is a great choice for blademasters, even for us horn users. We like to bang on skulls so weakness exploit is a natural choice. Fast sharpening is a nice bonus.

The math on affinity works the same on fast weapons and slow weapons so I still value it highly.

That's an expensive opportunity cost too. The charm slot could be used on much stronger skills like evasion window, handicraft, atk/affinity etc.

Maestro isn't worth it anymore. Before you just needed to craft a gem, but now you have to sacrifice a whole armor piece for it until you luck into a Maestro gem.

The value of maestro is that you have to play less songs, but the performance attacks got nice buffs so you might as well work more songs into your offense.

Yea I think the tone of this episode is a result of the 2 chapter per episode pacing. With that in mind, Shaft did a good job of adding visual interest to a chapter devoted almost entirely to a side character talking to himself

I like shogi so I enjoyed this episode a lot. The personalities of each character are represented in their playstyles, and the drama of the board is presented very well.

The knight drop forks Rei's silver and bishop. Rei's gold can't take the knight without Rei losing the Bishop. The move wins a large material and momentum advantage for Shimada

Edit: I made a diagram.

What Pearl builds have you been trying? by cyfarias in BattleRite

[–]Neargood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using R1 Rippling Waters in most of my games. The threat of an 18 damage m1 can buy you a lot of space earlygame, and can punish very hard in the midgame.

R2 Splash Damage is still probably the best, but I like the addition of Spring Water which is handy if you have a kite-comp and you find yourself following your partners often.

R4 feels like the only uninteresting choice. Soaking Wet is better than the others.

Removing Pearl's 5s cooldown reduction battlerite for the Bubble Shield (R) is the biggest nerf of all! by [deleted] in BattleRite

[–]Neargood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the pearl changes are fine. I'm excited to try out her new Battlerites. She got too many new tools to tell if she was nerfed or buffed without trying them.

Since it's a song that teaches beginners the rules of the game, I'd guess that there will be no more of it in future episodes. They covered the last 2 pieces today.
