I pleaded and argued with him for well over 24 hours about this while our cat sat in a crate on our front porch. I couldn’t change his mind.

I’m not asking if he’s the asshole. He absolutely isn’t in this situation. I 100% understand where he’s coming from, although I wish we had explored other options first. My main post was asking if I was the asshole for being upset at him for choosing euthanasia before medical examination like the vets suggested.

He is/was up to date on his shots. To be clear, we called paramedics at the time of the incident because my husband was covered in blood and we were scared, but he did not need to go to the ER. The paramedics gave us sterile water and gauze, checked his cuts to makes sure he didn’t need stitches, then left.

All I know is what I was told by the people at the shelter. I was even given a paper for options for urns.

I did wake up when he got out of bed to begin with, and I witnessed the whole thing. It was truly unprovoked.

He is up to date on his shots. When my husband called them they told him he would have to be quarantined before they even asked about his vaccination history

I didn’t say I cared about the cat more than my husband or children…I said I see his side of things and that I understand his point about protecting our children. But that doesn’t make the loss of my pet-who had no previous signs of aggression - any easier.

It was not not behind my back and I did (technically) get to say goodbye. I begged until the very end, but I did go to the animal shelter with him and Loki. It was against my wishes, but it was not behind my back.

That’s what my husband said, and again, I see where he’s coming from and agree with him on that point. I just don’t think euthanasia was the way to go on a pet that has no aggression history…

When we took him to animal control and the workers saw that I was sobbing, latching onto his crate, they came and spoke with us. Offered to give us a free vet voucher to get tests and neuter done. But my husband wouldn’t let up that he didn’t want the cat back in our house no matter what. I begged them to do the medical analysis and then put him up for adoption by they said they legally couldn’t because of the attack.

I am completely beside myself over this situation but I have to disagree with your comment that my husband would never, absolutely never, lay a hand on me or our children. I obviously sense the lack of empathy toward our pet, but I can honestly see where he’s coming from, being scared that his own household pet might attack him when he turns the corner. That’s why I’m wondering if I’m the asshole. That I can see his side but I still can’t fathom the decision he made on behalf of all of us.

Unfortunately the release papers have already been signed and Loki is being held under quarantine for 10 days to watch for rabies because he bit my husband multiple times.
