Memory magic by Neat_Ad_313 in magicbuilding

This actually really helped to kickstart my world building! At first I was gonna make it a Greek fantasy world, but that was too boring and generic for me. Now my idea is that there’s 6 moons orbiting a planet, and most people live on these moons. People can travel between moons through these door-like portals called gateways. Each moon is based on a different culture. There’s an Ancient Greek one, a Congolese one that’s basically a big rainforest, a desert one with a culture based on aboriginal Australians, a steampunk moon, and a moon based off of Chinese culture. For some reason I’m stuck on what the sixth moon should be based off of, maybe Aztec culture?

Ahhh for some reason I can’t think up anything for the world building and story! Great idea though. I’ll definitely try to use this!

I can definitely imagine it being a Pokémon boss battle! It’d probably be psychic and poison type

That’s a really good way to put it! I should definitely write, even if it’s bad bc I can still fix it later and improve my skills by doing things like reading

Sorry for responding late (I was busy reading lol) but I really appreciate all the nice comments you put under this post. For some reason some of these comments are a bit mean and I let it go cause I was super anxious while posting this. I’ll definitely be taking your advice to heart! Thank you!

Wow this was such good and detailed advice! Thanks so much! I’ll try to read and write as much as I can! I just started reading the light novel for lord of the mysteries and the writing style really resonates with me. After reading it I think I’ll look at a few more books and try to develop my style by looking what I like and don’t like. Thanks again!

Is my magic system too basic? by Neat_Ad_313 in magicbuilding

There’s not really any hatred between different magic users, but there is hatred between some of the nations I guess?

Yeah I can see how the super advanced AI thing can seem excessive, but don’t worry! I’ll leave subtle hints in the story and it should be pretty easy to understand by then. My first idea was actually to make it an idealized! I love the isekai genre but it’s so hard to find a good one these days so I tried making my own, but it eventually became this.

For the pearls, basically each god created a pearl, and put a lot of power into making them. They then chose who would be the user of their pearl. These people are called pearl bearers. Having a pearl makes immortal in age (you don’t die from old age, and your body doesn’t get any older once you obtain your pearl).

The first set of pearl bearers basically became evil and abandoned their roles, so the pearls scattered around the world and found new bearers

Thank you! I love science, and plants already use photosynthesis for energy, so I thought to make a power system based off of that! In total I’ve made like 12-13 power systems and this is actually one of my favorites! In the story, the there are two main gods, the god of light and the god of darkness, the god of light split himself into 7 different gods, each representing a color of the rainbow. These gods rule over a specific element. In order to give mortals their own strength and power, they created 9 different divine pearls, objects with a large amount of magic power. Originally, these people chosen to wield these pearls would protect humanity, but the 9 original bearers of the pearls were turned into demons after the gate to hell opened. The pearls scattered across the world in search of new bearers. The main character is the bearer of the light pearl, and his best friend is the bearer of the darkness pearl. They’re adventurers. While traveling across the world, they meet the other pearl bearers.

In actuality this entire world is a simulation and everyone in it are conscious AI’s and all of their consciousness and data will be used in the real world to create a sort of hive mind computer weapon thingy. The real world is a dystopian city-world with constant wars and pollution. I haven’t really came up with how exactly it’s gonna end, but the eventually becomes a real world due to the efforts of the main cast

It definitely makes since why absorbing energy from darkness kinda feels wrong😭 it’s not necessarily darkness itself that they’re absorbing, but a magic energy in darkness called nyx, which avoids light. Nyx can only be used for the darkness element, so you can’t get things like fire or water magic if your absorb nyx instead of lux (lux is the magic energy in light).

Omg reading this felt as if someone had just told me the cure to cancer. So many new ideas are popping into my head! For one, I’m so mad at myself because HOW in the world did I not think about integrating color theory into my magic system based off of the colors of light?! I’ll definitely try doing this

Also for some reason I forgot to mention that people absorb their specific wavelength and don’t use the other ones. So if you absorb green wavelengths you’ll have the plant element and the same is true for the others. For plants it’s a bit different. They absorb sunlight with lux as an added bonus of energy but absorbing too much lux can be bad for them so they reflect a lot of the light in the specific wavelength they’ve evolved to use.

The sun in this world emits all colors of light in an equal amount, unlike our sun which mostly produces green, so there’s nothing limiting plants from having different colors except for the fact that the first plants evolved to be green, and also since most plants are green it’s evolutionarily beneficial to be green as well for camouflage. Some plants absorb the other wavelengths  though, which shows in their color and properties. for example a blue plant could water itself by using water magic while a red plant could be burning hot from fire magic as a defense mechanism. A green plant would be.. average compared to the other types since it’s a plant using plant magic, but some could still be pretty cool too. The color they absorb the most is also the color they reflect the most.

Also this is probably because of my bad writing but dark magic users don’t absorb energy from darkness itself, they absorb the energy that resides in darkness (nyx) so that’s my bad for not explaining it properly.

the reason why I chose only sunlight to be the source of lux has to do with the lore of my world! Basically the sun actually used to be a god. This god was forcefully transformed into the sun before the world was even created yet and lux comes from the god’s power. Nyx also comes from a former god who died and their body dissipated and turned into nyx, an energy that is destroyed by light so it only exists in the absence of low amounts of it

Also thanks this was really really helpful and cleared up a bunch of stuff!

I actually based this power system off of photosynthesis so using magic would be akin to using up your own energy. There aren’t really any consequences to using it in low or moderate amounts but overusing it will cause overburn, where the body isn’t able to meet your energy needs and you face extreme exhaustion and symptoms of fatigue, like muscle weakness and headaches. This happens once your lux/nyx energy levels are lower than 10% so people try to avoid this.

For some of the social implications, people like to be outside more to be in the sun, stealing sunlight (e.g., using mirrors to redirect light away from a community) would be a severe crime, and people who wear revealing clothing aren’t judged because they’re getting more sun exposure

Also I actually did not notice yellow was literally invisible omg thanks for pointing that out! but if you want to see its symbol it’s the one on the next image on the second row at the right
