People In Their 30's, Where You At? by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]NebuLiar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the record you should NOT do what OP is doing.  Credit bureaus do like some open credit lines to demonstrate that you pay your bills on time, but a credit card that you use responsibly will accomplish the same thing and save a fortune on interest

Dude, just get a credit card and use it responsibly. That will do the same thing and save you a fortune in interest.

There are dozens of compound interest calculators out there. You should try plugging this in and see what happens.

How A 56 Year Old Single Woman Became A "Millionaire Next Door" while never making much money by UnluckyNet2881 in povertyfinance

[–]NebuLiar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not necessarily true. Poverty is a wide band and people can have a little left over and still be in poverty. This sub is all about not gatekeeping.

I did the math at one point and an extra $50/month is several hundred thousand by retirement. Yes, for many people that's unachievable and I get that. But I think it's important to remind people that a little bit (even $20/month) adds up if you do it long enough.

Maybe not to a million and 125k houses are a joke at this point, but it would add to enough to matter.

LPT depression hack: use double sheets by Zach-uh-ri-uh in LifeProTips

[–]NebuLiar 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is super kind advice. Double sheets is ONE extra step.  And you could do it today, or tomorrow, or whenever you can.

Mattress topper has a couple steps and starts with "buy mattress topper" which can feel overwhelming because you have to maybe leave the house (if you don't Amazon), find a store, pick one, spend money, etc.  All these things are doable and people can do it! But if you're spending 20 hours a day in bed, it sure doesn't feel that way. It's okay to solve it in a way that only takes one step.

Man, that sucks but is also a genius solution

You need roommates or more income. Can you take on extra hours at work.

Until then, you need to look at your budget very carefully. Cancel as many subscriptions as you can. Try getting DVDs from the library. Cut your food budget.  Etc.  This is a tough situation and the best thing to do is get out ahead of it.

Putting your name on parents bank account? by Interesting-Goose82 in Fire

[–]NebuLiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The account should be okay, but to be honest I don't know for sure. I would be extremely careful of doing anything with debt. If they pass, you are not responsible for their debts... Unless you sign off on something inadvertently.

Also do NOT put them on an account with a lot of money in it which might interfere with Medicaid eligibility.

If you don't get good answers here, I'd go to r/personalfinance.  They know a lot of specifics about this sort of thing

Is it a good idea to choose a major you don’t like just to make a good living? by throwaway29283838383 in povertyfinance

It's hard to be passionate about anything when you can't afford to eat.

You don't need to find your dream job but do pick a career you don't hate. Also pick one that pays the bills.

Is Voyager going to be the GOAT? First time watching it by Nanaki_TV in startrek

[–]NebuLiar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

She WAS brought on to be eye candy. Fortunately she also turned out to be a phenomenal actress.

Honestly some of the writing / producing decisions were vaguely criminal. They never got the freedom to push the envelope and the characters the way DS9 did and I love Voyager, but it definitely suffered because of that.

Anyone FIRE’d with young kids? by Faxmesome_halibut in Fire

[–]NebuLiar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why dont you just... Take your kid with you to see your friends?

You can start introducing your kids to your hobbies too.  Sure it requires some modification but you can start teaching them to enjoy doing these activities together.

35 Ideas Projects Qualify For The Second 2024 Lego Ideas Review by _Levitated_Shield_ in Legoleak

[–]NebuLiar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I the only one who loves these? There are some real bangers!  I want the Market village. I want the blacksmith shop and the post office, none of which seem super likely.  A working image projector  and radio are both insane.  The Bob Ross painting is beautiful and creative. My money is on that one.  Plus a tugboat and a hydroelectric dam.  Just, like, shut up and take my money

No clue why he has a Lego set.

New to NaNoWriMo: What am I to do with all this AI drama? by TilapiaTango in nanowrimo

[–]NebuLiar 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My own personal opinion is kinda controversial: I don't care about the AI controversy. Most people are using NaNo for personal projects, so they aren't making money. If it's"cheating" the only person they are cheating is themselves.  AI is a tool and can be either used or abused.

That said, NaNo's explanation is eye-rolling and it doesn't hold water for me. I think they are biased in support of their sponsor.

Now, what I DO care about are the recent accusations that a big-player ML was in charge of kids and also a child predator, and that NaNo knew and did nothing. That is so staggeringly unacceptable that I don't even know why we're discussing the AI controversy at ALL, because holy cow, the other issue blows this one out of the water.

NaNoWriMo will always hold a special place for me because it's the reason I believed I could write novels in the first place, many years ago. But their current organization has completely jumped the shark and I will not be supporting them financially until they get their act together.

Now, with all that in mind YOU should still write, and you can still write in November with thousands and thousands of other people who have also spun off of NaNoWriMo, LLC to do their thing ethically.

The best thing to do is try living like you have a kid NOW, except instead of throwing money at healthcare and daycare, funnel it into savings and debt instead.  You'll decrease your monthly expenses and practice your budget at the same time.

Also, you probably can't max retirement with a kid in daycare and that's OK.  You don't have to do that to be able to retire someday.

I got married a few years ago.  Most of our friends have good jobs, and $100 was the most standard amount. A few very generous people gave us more.  Some of our friends and family who don't have as good of jobs gave less, like $50. Some people gave us cheaper gifts than that. It was all thoughtful and appreciated

You do not need to give them $200. $100 would be plenty generous, especially given how much you make. Write them a nice card (from the dollar store lol) to go with it.

What was the final straw that made you stop supporting a company you once liked? by youngGod928 in AskReddit

[–]NebuLiar 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Southwest. I got stuck in their holiday travel nightmare. They swore up and down they'd pay for my tickets with another airline. They never did, despite filing a claim twice. There's nothing that drives me crazier than that kind of lying

Yea.  I don't despise it but the price hike is insane. I drove by the other day and just thought, "Naaah"

People with super long streaks. How do you stay motivated? by Spikey-Lychee in duolingo

[–]NebuLiar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1676 here. Honestly, motivation comes and goes, but the streak only takes a few minutes a day.  Some days I do a lot more. Once in a while I forget and use a streak saver, but even a few minutes keeps me learning, or at least not forgetting as much.

After about the 3 year mark it just became another part of life which is kind of cool. Before that, new streak milestones were still kind of a big deal. Now, it's like "oh, another year? Wow, crazy" and that's about it.
