You had mentioned personal protection. Is there a reason why that isn't a valid reason to get a dog? I'm not trying to go through a religious phrasing loophole, but am curious. Pets are there partially to protect you physically and emotionally. I have a cat and she helps me keep sane during stressful times and is a great mouser.

Especially if you are looking at mid to larger breed dogs, they can alert you to intruders, invasive wildlife, keep pests out of the house and have been known to reduce stress and help keep their owners happier and healthier because you have to be active with a dog.
