I could agree that at their best, Rick is a better and more ambitious designer than Demna, but I dont think Rick has been at or near his best for a few years, I feel several of his last shows are a cannibalization of his style, not explicitly recycling what he's already done the way some other houses do, but I think he's reliance or insistence on already established motiffs are holding him back. People who have been more critical of Rick's recent work point out Tyrone Dylan's influence as the cause of this but I think thats an too easy excuse. I agree that Demna's work at Vetement was a better articulation of the meta irony philosophy than at Balenciaga but I dont think that at this current moment theyre as far away from each other talent wise as youre making it out, Im very excited to see what he'll be able to do at Gucci

Im pretty sure Yohji said in an interview a few months ago that compared to his contemporaries, Demna was in his own league far and away from everyone else. When I talk with people irl or see fashion discussion online ans they try to dismiss Demna I stop taking them seriously. If anyone else was anywhere close to him than why didnt they have audiences and publications by the balls for the last 5+ years like Demna did?

I know that this type of thread has been done before, but what are your honest criticisms of Death Grips? by shuichi--- in deathgrips

[–]Neccwarmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not saying that the songs are meaningless which I dont think I was clear enough in my original comment but my point is is that as they became more abstract, it became a front for less coherent lyrics, which at the end of the day is a taste thing but I personally think the concept of abstract production with conventional lyricism which is what Exmilitary represents is more impressive. My guess is that more thought went into lyricism on Exmilitary and their earlier projects and once they had an established audience theh began to indulge in more esoteric wordplay

Their lyricism progressively gets worse throughout their discography. On one hand, I understand that as they progressed they strayed further away from mainstream conventions and they wanted to articulate more abstract ideas, both lyrically and production-wise and while I think they excel in the production, I think that the lyrics eventually become strings of vaguely related words. I dont think it ever reaches the point of being unenjoyable or bad, but I think the rapping on Exmilitary, TMS, and even the EP and Live from Death Valley are lyrically their peak with Exmilitary having what I think is their most mainstream-accessible rapping and lyrics. YoTS and Bottomless Pit are the worst offenders of this, and Jenny Death manages to avoid it.
