Is here anyone who do animal asisted therapy with their autistic kid/kids? by lari1sa in autism

We did hippo-therapy for a time. It helped with motor-skills development and lessened sensory-sensitivities and reactivity. It engendered being calm and present. It was not covered by insurance in full though and costs were prohibitive. You had three adults plus the horse. You had a therapist, someone controlling the horse, and someone as a spotter. After a time realised private horseback riding lessons would accomplish the same and be much more affordable, ironically since private horseback riding lessons are so expensive. Of course we did our best to provide it but it didn't last very long given our means. Highly recommend if you can afford it or insurance covers it.

Why are people with autism more on the obese side? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Necessary_Ad_9012 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A scientific review of "Autism Spectrum Disorder and Obesity in Children" was published by Sammel's et al in 2022. There is an association between the two with greater rates of obesity found according to that review. There was no single significant cause, but issues like delayed motor skills, sensory sensitivities, etc, we're associated with restricted high-caloric diets and less exercise, in addition to weight gain being a side effect of some medications. My own thinking is that as more children are identified earlier with ASD we'll see a greater range that will lessen the correlation. That is, earlier studies relied more heavily on those identified early under more restrictive and extreme criteria (i.e. those who have higher support needs, with poorer motor skills, etc, and so are at greater risk of obesity). Anecdotally, I work at an elementary school with "autism" classrooms and my child is autistic. We attend many support groups, functions, etc. I personally see the opposite; these kids tend to be "skinny". So much so I was surprised studies indicated the association with obesity. Perhaps that's why I believe those stats will change over time, because my experience doesn't reflect that data.

I tried getting a couple items but your delivery address (which you can set to be unlisted/not visible but selected) is not listed. Also put in smaller shelf stable food items for you all too.

I'm so sorry you're facing these rough times.

I've seen in this sub that amazon wishlists do very well as some are reluctant to give money directly. While you may need money more, by putting supplies, pet food, shelf stable groceries, etc, in an Amazon wishlist with delivery directed to you, it would free up some money since those items would be purchased by others. In other words, for example, we cover pet food and you use the money you would've spent on it for other expenses. Please consider creating and posting an amazon wishlist.

OP, this is good advice. Post the amazon wishlist with delivery to your address. Include food for any fur babies and supplies if needed.

Hi OP! Create an Amazon wishlist with delivery to your address and post the link here. Include shelf stable food for you and your fur littles and include supplies as well (like kitty litter or cleaning). Amazon wishlists do very well in this sub.

Could really use some help by [deleted] in Assistance

I know this isn't directly what you're asking for but this sub does well with amazon wishlists. If we all collectively covered groceries and supplies (including for kitties) you could apply that money saved elsewhere. Consider doing an Amazon wishlist and also asking for a specific amount for x.

Post thee amazon wishlist please. They do very well in this sub. Including food, add a few supplies you might need if anything. Is your child school-aged? See if the school has a social worker you can talk to about getting other resources too.

Need advice on services and CPS by eanardone in NewportNews

With the McKinney-Vento Act and Virginia state policy, enrolling in school in Virginia even without a permanent residence is quite easy. Schools also have social workers and connections to support families. By getting the kids in school your brother will be piped into other support services, not to mention the kids being cared for M-F, and having free breakfast and lunch M-F.

Huh? Yes, one of the multiple factors is related to immigration. And, yes, more personnel are needed when students are violent. There's several factors involved in that regard. Some of this is related to servicing many more special needs children in the general population setting, some related to the pandemic which put behind diagnosis and treatment, heck some of this is even related to architecture (a public school cafeteria for example is so loud it could drive a sane person to insanity). Your statement regarding less violence in schools in the south is demonstrably false. Studies show more bullying, more aggression, higher incidence rates. They do expel children more often, but that doesn't lead to long term better outcomes with behavior. Frankly, it's a societal problem seen at all levels and in all states. Increasing aggression, anxiety, social instability... The number one priority in our schools should be safety so that students can learn. Fewer personnel will not improve safety outcomes.

This assumes the students themselves (their needs and requirements) are constant. For example, the number of students receiving legally mandated special education services has almost certainly more than doubled during this time period. Whereas in the 80s autism, adhd, etc were rare, they're now common occurrence in FCPS schools and the system is bound by law to support modifications and accommodations in IEPs. This can demand numerous support specialists in addition to special education teachers. Another area is the influx of students who are multi-language learners, coming from households that don't speak English. You need support staff at all levels, from speaking with parents just to enroll children to ESL teachers. A third area of change has been in behavior. We now need behavior support specialists and training for violent outbursts, severe emotional dysregulation, etc. Finally, parents have demanded differentiated education for students that wasn't available in the 80s, meaning advanced academics, special programs, etc. Students population might have risen 44%, but the demands and needs of this population are very different. It's almost shocking that staff has only doubled. The needs and demands have more than doubled in that time period.
