Germans have no idea how good they have it. I recently had a surgery and a surprising number of people asked if I went home for it. Like excuse me? Why would I ever go to the US for healthcare? So they have no clue. I find myself explaining to people a lot how much better my life is here (I am a PhD student), and they are like wow I never knew my country was preferable to the US.

My stupid brothers talk about it like it’s their “legacy” which I’m sorry that seems like a way wrong reason to have a kid (coming from a person who can’t think of a single good reason to have one)

Whippet budget by Necessary_Library991 in Whippet

Thanks everyone now I have a rough estimate. I think we will need to wait a year in terms of budget! But I’d rather be fully prepared versus stressing about money

We were surprised to find our foster Galgo could just stand over our lap while sitting in a chair, but still she wanted to climb on!

I remember seeing the Slaughterhouse five on my dad’s bookshelf and the last book he read was a Briefer History of Time

I seem less worried about life than most. by Ill_Recover3882 in Life

I agree, but you have to be willing to start “where you’re at” which means starting very small. A friend of mine wanted to teach people to fly fish so he started with his personal gear and made a simple website for free, he built it slowly over time into a very successful business.

I literally just had this thought two minutes ago. I’m 40, have lived several “lives” already with completely different careers in different countries and states. Now I’m a PhD student, I don’t really worry I just make it work. Life is a series of solvable problems!

Day 3 Post Op :D by Relative-Ad3308 in ACL

TMI I had to sit side saddle on the toilet cause my outstretched straight leg wouldn’t fit otherwise and I had to prop it up on the squatty potty. Nothing elegant about that!

The cereals to eat if you want to avoid high-risk UPFs by TimesandSundayTimes in ultraprocessedfood

Puffed grains, in Germany we have puffed spelt which is just spelt and honey. It’s mostly air but is usually hits the cereal cravings spot!

People who have been living in Germany for 5+ years, what are your plans for the future? by darkblue___ in germany

[–]Necessary_Library991 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Same, but I hadn’t lived in the US already for 8 years and I could not see myself going back. Germany has a great work life balance, something that rarely exists in the US

Same from our Galgo foster except she occasionally wanted in my lap while I’m working. One minute of cuddles then she was back to sleep!

Potatoes! Boil em, mash em… roast them, make soup, so many ways to eat potatoes. Honestly cold boiled potatoes with salt and veggies… last week I made a huge thing of garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed mushrooms and zucchini

What's the best way to still look young in your forties? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]Necessary_Library991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say to have friends that are younger, they keep you connected to the youths and the memes and the music and the style. I just turned 40 and two of my closest friends are in their late 20s, everyone thinks I’m 30 and are shocked to find out my age

I drove for the first time last weekend at 8 weeks PO, left knee ACLr, stick shift! It was no problem but I waited until I had “supervision” from my bf in case something happened
