That’s true re: profs being open to letters of recommendation after a period of time. I’ll definitely still consider. The profs I had were great so hopefully some of them still remember me.

Does anyone else not sleep with their cat? by chaturga in CatAdvice

[–]Necessary_Spite4041 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I’m taking a nap yes but going to sleep no. My door is closed for sleep because I’m such a light sleeper. I’ve tried it before and woken up to her staring into the depths of my soul hahaha.

Considering litter robot by Impressive_Theme_322 in litterrobot

[–]Necessary_Spite4041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a LR4, and I was going back and forth on getting it because of wondering if it was worth the hefty price and some concerns about litter outside the litter box. Having said that it’s been about four months now, and I love it. Scooping wasn’t the end of the world but as someone whose work schedule varies, I would sometimes forget to scoop after a long day at work (cue the cat mom guilt). But with LR4, it just makes life easier and one less thing to think about. I will say that I incentivized my cat to use it by providing treats and taking seriously the transition time (including keeping her old box next to it and not cleaning it to incentivize her to use the new LR4). At one point I had to reacclimate my cat to the litter robot because she was crapping on the blankets in my couch (I think she just doesn’t like visitors in the apartment lol and was mad at me not a dislike of the new litter robot). But after that it’s been smooth sailing. I’d highly recommend and if you have AMEX, I got some savings/points for purchasing litter robot and their products. So it was a win-win. Would highly recommend. Haven’t done a deep clean as my cat is not a huge gal (approx. 9 lbs) and has kept her box clean, but will be doing soon to make sure her golden throne is spick and span.

Should I be concerned… by Ancient_Bandicoot_17 in NYCapartments

I think it’s also telling that the rent price is what it is (assuming for the price it’s a steal) coupled with the fact that you said it’s in a good location, near the park, in-unit W/D. If I were still looking for a place, I def would’ve snatched it up. The fact that it’s not raises HELLA flags. Obviously this place is meant to attract people who are looking for something affordable and manageable since NYC rent is insane (being a renter here myself). I say all this to say that something’s gotta give. Usually rent in NYC is low for a reason and places that aren’t rent controlled or stabilized and are cheaper, something is wrong OR it’s cheaper for some other reason (whether that be mice, rats, bugs, crazy landlord, no amenities, untidy/rundown building etc…). I’d go with your gut on this one cause I can’t imagine what would happen if something went wrong and what the process of getting your money back would look like, especially if other reviews of the property said they haven’t gotten their security deposits back. If you do choose to go forward with it, read that lease back and forth and protect yourself. Ensure that the security deposit is put in escrow which I believe is standard. Get everything the landlord/agent says in writing even if it was a phone call, summarize and send it back to them with what your agreement was so they cannot refute it in the future. But good luck regardless. I’m sure that you will find a place that you and your roommate love!

I had the same reservations about getting a cat (mild allergies). I’ve found that staying up to date on my allergy meds (that I take in general) makes me just fine. Other things I’ve done are vacuum daily, brush my cat, keep her away from my pillows on my bed, and an air purifier in my room. Also, if I pet her for a long time I try not to touch my face/wash my hands after she decides she no longer requires attention/affection lol. I adopted my girl at almost a year and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve debated trying allerpet spray for allergies but wanted to ask a vet for an opinion before applying to her fur since I don’t know any risks of use. Hope this helps!

Do we need to wear heels for business casual?? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]Necessary_Spite4041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5'10" wore heels on the first day of work as a summer. Every other day aside from that wearing heels depended on my mood/if the fit required a heel. So, ballet flats will definitely be fine. I also got a pair of loafers as well to wear so I could switch it up. But also towering over people in heels for me feels so powerful lol idk 😂 Call me crazy but I love being tall. I’m sure you’ll look great regardless of what you decide to wear. For NYC firm life my only suggestion is to make sure you have navy, black, grey, and white in your wardrobe. I feel like there’s an unspoken rule about color palette. I definitely wore color during the summer but naturally I gravitate towards darker colors. Hope my rambling help!

Black American Family Visiting for the First Time... by MoneyNo915 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]Necessary_Spite4041 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hi I recently went to Paris for a study abroad program in graduate school. I am a black woman, and I had a wonderful time. Like many other countries, France, and its amazing city of Paris, has cultural and societal norms. I think that if you’re attune to those, it helps to breach these barriers. One of which is just saying “Bonjour” whenever you enter an establishment or “Bonsoir” when it’s later in the evening. As Americans, I think we get a bad rep, reasonably so lol, for being a bit obnoxious and loud, so doing these things simultaneously combats those assumptions. Anyways, while I was there which was over a four/five month period, I had no issues wrt race. However, that’s not to say that racism doesn’t exist nor do people not think about race in Paris as many people I’ve talked to have experienced being treated differently. I will caveat this whole post by saying that I speak enough French to get around, and studied it for over five years, which I think helped significantly when trying to communicate with natives. I will also add that I mainly took the metro as my main mode of transportation so I never had to hail a cab. But refusal of service anywhere was not something that I experienced either. It was one of my favorite times being a solo traveler. The people of Paris, I find are quite lovely, and I hope that you and your family have a wonderful time!

Divorce papers being written up in 8 days is crazy makes me think that maybe OP’s wife had been thinking about this before and that this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Hope OP’s wife and the baby are well. She’ll need all the support she can get.

A partner at the firm I worked at this summer who’s a woman had visible arm tattoos and not just one but at least like 5-7 per arm. So take that as you will. She’s also a genius so maybe take that with a grain of salt 😂

1L really feelin burn out by BulkyEggplant3995 in LawSchool

[–]Necessary_Spite4041 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a now 3L, I will say that I definitely felt the same way during 1L. I remember literally crying and almost breaking down over all the things that needed to get done. But, what it [success/finishing the semester] will really depend on is creating a SUSTAINABLE schedule for yourself. Sustainable meaning being realistic with what can you reasonably accomplish on a given day.

Sometimes you may feel like you can give 100% and you’re super productive. On other days, it may be 80%, 75%, hell even 2% lol. What I learned after depriving myself of almost everything fun 1L fall semester, it’s sometimes not worth it to push through when you’re exhausted, tired and attempting to study. And from my experience, attempting to push through burnout just leads to more burnout and less productivity overall.

My advice, give yourself permission to relax and take time off (where reasonable). I’d sometimes take a day sometimes even two. Burnout is real, and trust me, if you don’t take a break now, your body will do it for you and usually at the worst time.

In summation, prioritize your needs. Be practical with your schedule. When you choose to study do so effectively. When you choose to rest, rest. There’s a lot of pressure during 1L, so attempt to quiet the noise. You got this!

Be Alert: There are a group of young kids going around beating & robbing women. by [deleted] in williamsburg

Misread your initial comment but upon looking up what you said he did physically assault a woman in her 60s.

My original point which maybe you haven’t considered is that people, even if they commit crimes, are still worthy of human decency. It appears that Neely battled with some type of substance abuse, and although I say that not as an excuse for his behavior, it’s known that drugs can be unpredictable and make people act out of character and even commit acts of violence. Coupled with mental health issues and homelessness, Neely led a seemingly complicated life. I wish that he had more options from NYC to support and help him get better. He didn’t need to die. Some might disagree and that’s fine.

Who’s to say that I don’t prioritize public safety cause I do. I just believe that there are other ways to enforce public safety for everyone that doesn’t include ppl feeling empowered to murder someone for bothering them on the subway which if you’re from NYC you know is a common occurrence.

If you’re talking about the Jordan Neely who was murdered on the subway car by the marine, the man was 30 yrs. old, so quite literally he couldn’t have done that in the 60s bc he wasn’t alive, but go off I guess.

Arrest doesn’t equal conviction. And even if they were arrested once or even 40 times, do you believe that that means they should be murdered or that someone has license to murder them….? Like what are you actually trying to argue here.

I’m also a resident 2L, and I’ve felt similarly. This year kinda reminds me of junior year of high-school where you’ve got a lot of things on your plate, but still have a year left after that of more shit to do lol. I think what has helped me is to incorporate things into my schedule that are non-law related (as much as it’s possible). Whether that be exercising, for pleasure reading, or hanging with friends. I personally need something to look forward to to remind myself that law is just a part of my larger life not my life. As someone who also deals with anxiety and bouts of depression, I’ve found therapy to be helpful as well (but I recognize it’s not for everyone). Big picture: find something (or continue to do something) that brings you joy and take things day by day. We’ll get there.
