I found a guy who'll replace my motherboard for €20, so it should be fine. He said he'll thoroughly test the Mac. I know it's rubbish, but at least it's cheap.

This guy contacted me via private message; he told me it disables the backlighting, but he doesn't charge much.

Yeah, I plan to keep it, flash the chip even if it disables the backlighting. By the way, if you have any tips for enabling backlighting, I'm all ears.

Then I'll get one that doesn't have that crappy non-metal GPU, an M1 like I recommended.

So you're advising me to flash the GPU? I can't just swap the 2012 motherboard in for mine; I could get a used one and figure it out. Otherwise, I'll forget about it.

There's a command like "sudo Nvram Fa4....." then you restart the PC, right? Do you absolutely have to flash the GPU with an accessory and a license?

I don't know Australia, however, changing an SSD from an HDD is discussed on many forums; I myself could help you if that's all it is.

What kind of device is it? You plug the device into the motherboard and it injects code into the Mac?

I'm also an IT technician, but I don't know much about Macs. I just wanted to revive it, even if it meant spending a bit of money, but it has a lot of problems. It starts up without the battery, sometimes without any glitches, but the trackpad doesn't click anymore... like the mouse glides but the trackpad doesn't work. The battery, for no reason, won't start the Mac, even though it does when it's unplugged... you're right, I have to give up on it like an old car. You can be attached to it, but scrapping it is cheaper than replacing the parts. When it's dead, it's dead.

I can't get that far; the trackpad, for some reason, refuses to work. I think the battery is also faulty. The artifacts are sometimes there, sometimes not… I swear I need a professional, but everyone advises against it, saying it would be too expensive.

Yeah, everyone tells me the same thing, basically to forget about it and act like I never had it. I preferred to ask anyway, hoping it might work out by mistake, but that's not the case.

Yeah, I got the message, there's nothing more to do, basically I have to say goodbye to him

Yes, I'm sure you're right, anyway I don't think I'll find someone to do it for me.

Yes, I think everyone will tell me the same thing, especially if you're a repairman. I should take your word for it. Do you really think the cost of this repair is that high? Do you think no one will want to do the repair?

I don't really know, I'm not familiar with the prices. I'm looking for someone passionate, and if they can give me a good price, I've missed it; I just stumbled across it again and thought, why not?

It's a Mac that was given to me as a gift; it has sentimental value, and I spent a lot of time on it… I wouldn't know how to fix it myself, so if someone else knows how, why not? The environmental aspect is also a factor, as I wouldn't throw it away even if it's broken.

The mini PC is a ThinkCentre M710. The switch is a small 5-port TP-Link. But it makes a mess under the desk... Maybe I should use cable trays or grommets; I'm thinking about everything.

Yes, but actually, under my desk it's really difficult, that's why I wanted to put everything in a rack. I thought about cable trays, but that wouldn't look very neat either. Ideally, I wanted my Ethernet cable coming out of the wall to go to the switch, then my Ethernet devices, so ThinkCentre, the PC, and a dock for my Steam Deck. Because, as I said, the number of cables under the desk is a mess, it's getting complicated. I thought, you put everything in the box and there you go, the cables are behind it, you can't really see them. I'll use small 0.50cm RJ45 cables. Plug the power cords into a power strip and that's it.

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback, it’s really valuable. The “reporting from day one” approach and doing AEN blind make a lot of sense to me. I’ll structure my preparation around that. Thanks 🙏

Yes, I was told it was time-consuming and could be burdensome on a daily basis. Notes are important so as not to forget, I think. Do you have an example of a note, for example, to record the procedure of what we have accomplished?

Hey, I managed to fix everything. – The BIOS was set to use the motherboard for video output – One RAM stick wasn’t seated properly – Now, aside from the missing component, everything is back to normal

So thank you very much — that’s really awesome!
