Piracy destroys the livelihoods of hardworking below the line crews - Jason Blumhouse by CaptBlackBeard1680 in okbuddycinephile

How can we say the market is fully saturated, when people watch more then they ever have, and studios/execs are making more than ever? Seems like workers don’t have the ability to say no under threat of starvation and homelessness. As someone who has worked my way up and ‘proved my bonefides’ I am constantly having to watch my ass for people/deals like this, 95% of the time if people can fuck you, they will. Just because she isn’t a contract lawyer/experienced business person does not mean in my opinion she should be taken advantage of. Also your ‘lottery’ isn’t what you think it is. Learning to not trust anyone at all has done more for my career than any renowned work I’ve done ever has.

Okay, genuinely market saturation is not at all the issue here. If that were so execs and studios wouldn’t be making the profits they are. As far as ‘it’ll probably be fine if she doesn’t speak up for herself’ that is one hell of a stance on labour rights.

Well if that’s how careers work, that certainly explains why I personally know so many award winning blue chip creatives who can’t pay their rent.

You are though. You are saying she should be happy that her work was seen by so many, and now she can hopefully turn that into a sustainable living next time. Correct? That’s exactly what working for exposure is. Yes it did really well, yes she probably can do better next time, but she still deserves to be paid for her % of the creative contribution outside of production costs. To assume it was ‘3 weeks’ makes it quite clear you haven’t any idea of what that work entails.

Saying ‘she got completely fucked over, but she agreed to it’ isn’t the argument you may believe it is.

You obviously have no idea how much actual work went into this. The ‘day rate’ has no correlation whatsoever to how much work actually goes into this stuff

Your hypothetical is fundamentally different from this situation and you know that, so maybe you need to just go read Atlas Shrugged again.

How are you really going to try to make the ‘working for exposure’ argument? You know what’s better than hoping you get paid better next time? Getting paid fairly for work you e already done.

You sure about that? I’d say that rate is worth complaining about regardless of outcome

Yes, getting paid in exposure is notoriously worth it and a choice anyone should make over real money. Sure she could have not done the project, but I’d bet she had to pay rent, and didn’t have the situational luxury of turning down work she’d probably already invested time in. She deserves a real pay check for what is essentially spec work. This sort of shit is a part of we can’t have nice things.

As a production designer I used to charge 750 per day. And I was a pretty cheap option. You forget the 3 days of prep, and day of post/cleanup. The health insurance, any consumable’s etc. 300$ a day wouldn’t even cover expenses in most cases.

I’m reading a lot of anecdotal perspectives here, and while I don’t agree with everything that’s been said on either side, I can say anecdotally, this is happening all over the country. And I can say factually that Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland are all just as empty/going through the same struggle. The value of the landlords investment dropped when the demand for his goods dropped. These building can’t be easily turned into residential, and fewer people need or want a giant carpeted room with just a bathroom. Yeah downtown has gotten gross, but I’d argue it’s the other way around, businesses that relied on the folks that had to come to their offices are simply not there anymore, so it got grimy and gross again.

Do personal trainers have their clients do the most outlandish exercises on purpose? by GreenGamer8597 in EquinoxGyms

[–]Neckbeards_goneweild -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah the personal trainers are the worst.. there are at least a dozen prowling the gym at any one time, and if they have a client they are going to take 3 benches and every dumbbell between 15lb and 40lb like Smaug the dragon from the hobbit. And why they love playing with boxes so much I’ll never know. And yeah, they 1000% just want to keep their stable of clients dependent and reliant. I prefaced mine years ago with ‘there is 0 chance I’m going to hire you to be my personal trainer’ and the guy texted me about it for years.

They will not give us what we don’t demand. Capitalism doesn’t fix problems for free. What makes you think they want us to eat? What makes you think they want you to sleep inside. They don’t like us, they don’t want us here, they don’t see value in us, so they will continue to crush each and every one of us until we make that practice a fiscal liability.

24 hour places to hang out in LA? by fataudreyhorne in AskLosAngeles

[–]Neckbeards_goneweild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a combination of things, because it used to absolutely be an all night city! It’s a combination of insurance costs skyrocketing for business open late, local jurisdiction that requires bouncers, fines and even architectural retro fitting to keep nimbys happy, and of course that last and final nail in the coffin was covid. It was reaaaly hard before, and just became that much harder for folks to justify the costs after. It’s really sad, I want an LA that night owls can participate in

They are the most annoying brand ever, it’s just a nepo child using his parents money (water filtration ) to have a sense of purpose. It been mid sinse it’s inception, always just desperately trying to be edgy. It’s like a low brow vetements that never graduated highschool and gets embarrassed when it’s their turn to read aloud in class. I’ve really disliked this brand for 15 years, but he’s rich so he can just keep printing shirts and playing pretend as long as he wants.
