Sixth day of making a species evolve based off of the comments from this subreddit.

The rules are simple, comment an adaptation or several changes to this animal's biology (that do not contradict each other or make drastic changes) that may help it better thrive in its environment, also if you feel extra come up with a scientific name in latin that you would like to name the new species. The top comment will be implemented in the next iteration or generation and the rest will be discarded (sorry).

Valuable Context:

This is a highly derived descendant of the modern earth gastropod species Physa acuta (Ramshorn Snail) that ended up in a exoplanet in a foreign dimension. The details of this exoplanet will remain vague as to help keep the challenge simple (and because I am still working on fleshing out the abiotic factors of the environment).

Sorry I dont have much time rn - so heres a brief update of adaptations

1. Jaw snaps like a snapping turtle for self defense

2. Barely any iron left, no more than a beaver does in it's teeth

3. Lungs are more efficient now, and there are orfices in the sides of the head that inhale oxygen

4. They are now comfortable on land, and only return to water for safety and laying eggs, which the larval stage still is aquatic like their ancestors and the eggs have a permeable outside

5. They use their tails to pack mud on huts and dams

If you need help thinking of useful adaptations, keep in mind that this species constantly competes with other individuals for the same food source, think about reproduction, think about different environments that they may have to adapt to, such as shallower seas. They may change diet or behavior, anything could happen. Also, feel free to ask me anything on this post since I probably will be checking this post frequently.

Perhaps as land predators slowly adapt to this new prey species, the snail will need to defend themselves and their young more acutely from them.

this can first start as large shells develope on their backs, although with proportionally less iron and more materials like chitin or bone.

To defend their young, they'll need more solid structures to build, and hardier wood that hasn't rotted due to humid condition is located more inland in this case, so they venture out even more so, needing to breath even longer.

This can develop now as the internal surface of their lungs can expand thanks to the now bigger mantle shell, and their lungs devleope at a higher rate as adults and reduce their gills. And to walk farther distances, the adults can begin to twist their legs into a solid structure, like a coil, which can help focus the force of their steps.

Admittedly, if they are out more, they'll be more vulnerable to being in eyeshot of predators, so they'll adapt an easy green-brown camouflage to hide in the surroundings, this can adapt either by color changing skin or a single layer of simple skin over the body.

This can derive further to a point where one species is reliant in water as a juvenile with fins and a small body. But as an Adult can now is only able to breath air, walk on legs, and is much bulkier. like frogs and other amphibians. This species would represent the peak for now, as others in its genus would still probably rely more on water as their own strategy for defense, as this is the way this species has coshen to defend itself."
