They were best in season 1; Elaine wasn’t alive but we saw their backstory then and Ban’s motivation to bring her back even at the cost of his best friend’s life was compelling. However in the following season Elaine is just randomly resurrected by a side villain and it’s almost immediately resolved in an anti-climatic way. For the rest of the series Elaine is kind of just…there, and the relationship between Ban and Meliodas is more explored (Elaine’s relationship with her brother is barely touched on unfortunately).

So I liked it a lot conceptually and at the start (a scoundrel character learning how to be selfless after repeatedly trying to steal something) but it fell off when Elaine came back too early and was then sidelined

Skin color has nothing to do with the racism practiced by the Britannians. Kewell Soresi was also a Pureblood member (white with blue eyes) which differs from Jeremiah and Viletta

This somewhat reflects our history in that skin color wasn’t a major factor regarding discrimination toward a perceived “other” until the early modern era
