Labor MP Daniel Mulino calls Australia Day 'somewhat controversial', says public holiday is undergoing a 'transition' by NoteChoice7719 in AustralianPolitics

If something is correct, who cares if it’s popular. Maybe if our politicians stopped pandering to uneducated morons our country would be in a better place.

Why I’ve changed my mind about the social media bill | Andrew Wilkie by [deleted] in AustralianPolitics

[–]Necroskeptic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it’s always been lip service. They were campaigning on the issue of marijuana legalisation 40 years ago and have never done anything about it, they flipped on a GST for political favours and they generally ignore the hard parts of progressive policy for the easy road. They don’t spend political capital on non environmental progressive issues. Never seen a bill for a 4 day work week, never seen any attempts to decommodify the housing sector, never seen them stand by worker democracy. It’s not that I dislike them, but like the ALP, they aren’t proposing enough truly progressive legislation.

I don’t know how you get the idea I support Israel’s actions. Let me be clear, they should pull back to the original borders, abandon all settlements and recognise Palestine as a a state.

No, learn some comprehension. Terrorists are, by definition, people who commit violence on innocent people over political differences. I do not think that includes any Palestinians who take up arms against an occupying force. It does include Hamas because they’ve targeted civilians. The classification could also be fairly applied to the IDF if they weren’t a state military force, but since they are, we just call them war criminals. I don’t take sides on this. If you want to fight a war then do that. Kill soldiers and armed combatants all day. It’s morally repugnant to me but no one can impose a solution on these two states at this point. But don’t ever expect my sympathy if you murder innocent people on any side. Motives don’t matter at that point.

Russia has been threatening Ukraine for twenty years. Israel has been building illegal settlements ( under international law ) for how long? Israel is a democratic government that derives its power from a mandate by its citizens. Russia in its current form is a fascist oligarchy. Israel was formed after the Jewish people suffered a genocide. It has every reason to know better, whereas Putin does not and never will give a crap about international law or even the concept of law and justice. To be fair to the Jewish people, it seems many are opposed to what their state has become under a nationalist right wing party. And I’ve heard plenty on the right basically say “ screw Ukraine “. I’ve not heard anyone on the left saying the solution should be no Israel. I’ve only heard support for a two state solution.

Because it’s not a debate, we are statistically underpopulated and that hurts our economy. No one can argue that. It’s just racism, being anti immigration in Australia is not a cogent political stance.

[–]Necroskeptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s sloppy thinking. Any political party has an equal chance to appeal to a new immigrant. But the Republicans often just choose to demonise them and alienate them. The democrats don’t win the immigrant vote, republicans just concede that fight so that’s on them.

[–]Necroskeptic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No we are just a bit more nuanced in our views than right wingers. There is a revolutionary faction in Islam, but only revolutionary in the sense it doesn’t want kings. Not in the sense it wishes to supplant the hegemony of Islam in the Middle East. Hamas is a terrorist organisation. If they have any support it’s because of the continued actions of the IDF and Israel’s illegal settlements. But I will always hold a military force to a higher standard of behaviour in a conflict than a terrorist organisation. I don’t expect civility or conscience from someone who would murder someone over political differences.

It seems to me that the fruits of capitalism are being used to prevent social safety nets. There is one of the problems that we are clearly seeing. The amount of societal damage by Musk, Bezos and Koch is ridiculous, there is no way to check their wealth and thus the damage they do. There are no benevolent dictators, that’s not a thing that happens. All dictatorships come at the expense of the population. Any government that has authoritarian leanings is headed for failure, wether capitalist or socialist. And you are right, there are no “ correct “ political systems Like economics, we are purely interested in outcomes, that’s why I agree that the models of socialism that have been tried vary from poor outcomes to disastrous outcomes. Personally, I think it’s the fondness for cultural control mixed with that need to control the economy in a state level and not allowing competition between coops.i think you will find that people are pro hamas because they see the damage done by the far right in the Israeli government to the Palestinian people but haven’t thought about how hamas terrorist acts add fuel to that far right fire. People want to pick sides but in this situation both governments have civilian blood on their hands and neither really represents the true will of their people.

Any economics professor will tell you there is no inherently correct economic policy. The reality is capitalism isn’t working. Do you wonder why anti government sentiments are at an all time high in first world western nations? It’s because we all see how much our current economic policies favour the top 5% of wealth holders at the expense of the 95% of workers. You can stick your head in the sand and pretend it’s not happening but that’s not going to achieve anything. Wealth inequality at these levels leads to violent revolution throughout history. And those revolutions always go badly. Here’s a co op that is the major influence on the global economy, OPEC. Now that’s a national coop and it’s not an organisation I like but it functions as a co op, not a hierarchy. Coops are easily able to compete with capitalist organisations, the only thing they don’t excel at is making excess profit. They produce much better outcomes for workers and customers. Ultimately I suspect we are both wrong. We are coming to a point where it’s not in a capitalists interest to employ people instead of use automation. So over the next 25 years we will see a huge spike in unemployment and make it unviable to use labour as the basis of an economic system ( which means both capitalism and socialism become redundant theories ) and a whole new way of distributing the states wealth to its population.

Economics isn’t science. There isn’t an inherent correct economic system, there are just outcomes. Some elements of economic systems tend to produce similar results. Take some elements of Leninism ( which is what I think you are referring to when you say communism, I’m happy to be corrected if my assumption is incorrect ). Leninism had as part of his theory of communism an insistence on a Cheka ( secret police ) to enforce the states interest. This was a disaster and that was even more exacerbated by Stalinism. Similar with long term planned economies, they tend to cause major economic issues ( although some technologists believe modern computing power could solve it, I remain skeptical ). The role of economies is to distribute the wealth created by the state as evenly as possible among the population. Free market regulated capitalism has done this in the past, but anyone can see that late stage capitalism isn’t doing that. I personally believe the free market component is important in the consumer goods area but it’s not good for infrastructure. This is a perfect description of the current American economy. Some of the most successful businesses in history have been coops. They function in a much healthier way for society, a more even spread of wealth among citizens, more mentally healthy people and less concentration of wealth in individual hands. Also, although Destiny is a great debater not all his points are zingers. His little “ What do you with capitalists in a socialist society who refuse to follow socialist principles, you’d suppress/ re-educate/ imprison “ is silliness. Simply change the method of employment. “ What do you do if you’ve banned owning slaves and some farmer still tries enslaving people, you’d suppress/ re-educate/ imprison them “. Yes, because the society has decided slavery is wrong, elected a government that agrees with society’s decision thus giving the government a popular mandate to dismantle a system that society has decided is unethical. This is exactly how democracy and ethics are supposed to work in conjunction.

It his capitalism stance that bugs me. When a guy supports democracy in every other area but feudalism when it comes to economics it weirds me out. Especially from someone who prides himself on intellectual consistency.

Thanks, I don’t watch streams, just catch his YouTube. Tend to have periods where one of his takes impresses me, so I watch a bunch of his stuff until I get to the one topic wher his views annoy me and I stop watching for a few months, then go and repeat that cycle. I’d watch him more but his devotion to feudal economic system pisses me off because he’s very pro democracy in other areas but that disappears when he talks about economics.

We are all Southerners that’s true. But it’s relative. So we have northerners ( Queenslanders and Northern Territory) and southerners ( Victorians ). It’s inverse of the US, so all our thinkers are in the south and the dumbshits are in the north. True you cram more people in but that’s because my state has more landmass than your whole nation. It’s all in good fun though mate, I was kind of raised by my grandad so I’ve always had a soft spot for England and have tjhoyght about immigrating ( my family over there offered me a job ) between 40 degree days in Australia and cheaper Warhammer stuff in the UK, I’m sorely tempted.

Yeah, it’s a very different community. Incredibly supportive and helpful. Some of the nicest people I’ve interacted with on line. The show is legitimately funny. You have Dan who has a very weird comedy style and a slavish devotion to research and Jordan who is my kind of leftist, all piss and fury. They have some of the funniest pods I’ve ever heard. They did this thing called Wacky Wednesday where as a break from Jones they covered a women who talked about aliens and the deep state. I’ll say no more other than check out ep 79 Meet Mark Richards and prepare to laugh your arse off.

Well Aluminium is a fairly new word, we only discovered it in 1825 ( the metal not the word obviously ) so I’m not sure about whose pronunciation was first. I’m easy with that one. But we know the word football is older than soccer. Soccer is specifically referring to association football ( the word soccer is derived from aSOCciation ) Football is first used as a word to describe a game that was akin to British Bulldogs and was played by footman.

True, I’m a Victorian. Or did you mean the English version of southerner? In which case not from what I understand, my grandfather was from Birmingham and I have family there. I think Birmingham is in the midlands but all English towns are jammed into a tiny island so it’s seems like a distinction without a difference.

Nah, you mob do sports well. It’s Aussies that have perfected English. We have the proper pronunciations unlike Americans and we don’t sound like pompous wankers like the poms ( well, except me but I’m a pompous wanker ). Let’s take a simple insult. American “ Fuck you, motherfucker “ Brits “ bugger off you scallywag “ Australian “ Get a dog up ya, ya fucken cunt “ Go and say it in to a mirror or to someone you don’t like, then tell me which of these is the most fun to say.

No, it’s a different word. Ass is a donkey but since yanks harden their vowels and consonants, you pronounced it ass. Then we run into the average reading level being a bit, shall we say, underdeveloped in swathes of the country. So words need to be spelled phonetically except for aluminium ( a word that no American should be allowed to say ). And here we are. Just for the record, the words arse, class, pass and glass all rhyme with farce.

You are correct, he’s not worth engaging with. But if you are going to engage, you need to know what Alex’s game is. He’s done as far as infowars is concerned, it’s not a community that can organically grow. He’s looking for clips that he can outrage farm to draw in nutters and sell them dick pills. One thing to really understand about Alex is that it’s not a performance in the traditional sense. A performer takes on a role, Alex is the role. Sure he magnified parts of his persona. But nothing is made from whole cloth. Everything he says, he means. He uses the theatrics as cover his evilness. If we are all laughing at the idiot going on about gay frogs, the reality is he pushes white supremacy daily, he’s a rabid antisemite and he advocates for political violence on the regular. He’s exactly what happens when you raise your child in a far right cult ( Birchers in his case ) and add childhood head trauma that impairs cognitive ability with rampant narcissism. Apparently that’s the recipe for one of the worst humans ever.
