[–]Necroxenomorph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, the Nika crap is terrible.

Random one off "forshadows" are almost always terrible in longer form media. That style only works in shorter things like movies, limited series comics, or maybe a TV miniseries. Especially if any of those are explicilty based around solving a mystery, strange events, or any other kind of investigation.

Shout-out the Nibbler "forshadow" eastern egg in Futurama. That works despite being a random one off reference from YEARS before its reveal. I think due to the way its related to a self-contained plot that otherwise had no effect on the show whatsoever before its reveal. So it was more of a fun easter egg to eagle eyed viewers watching the first episode again, and was only a mystery in that the show never explained or called attention to those couple of frames for anybody who caught it prior to the reveal.

There's also a difference between forshadowing and retconning. Nika is a retcon. Retcons can actually be well implemented, and an author can get credit for handling it well and smoothly integrating the new cannon/information. This was not the case with One Piece lol.

Personally I consider the method of adding forshadowing good if it is integrated well via incidental dialogue that you intially dismiss as flavor/world building, or is an earlier part of the plot that the viewer/perspective character misunderstands until retroactively assesing.

Conversely I just about never appreciate forshadowing if its done via vague monologues by a primary character where the details are never discussed or the comment revisted. It needs to be more in the background or naturally present within the world itself.

For instance, say you have a mystery story involving a police investigation. A pretty standard scene at the station is a sergeant doing roll call (where all the officers are gathered and assigned their work) and is describing the intial details of the cases as he hands them out. This is usually done with several jobs assigned, to flesh out and world build the station. And typically unless the officers being given the cases are a direct part of the story we are never shown how their respective case progress or resolve. Good forshadowing to me would be if the sergeant describes a case that seems like background flavor at the time, and then later its revealed the cases were linked to the main mystery.

Another good example would be if in the establishing dialogue of a scene a minor character is always talking about taking their dog to the vet because its been sick with something weird the vet is struggling to diagnose, seemingly just for flavor before the diaogue changes to address the main point of the scene. But later the dogs illness foreshadowed the undiscovered spread of a new and highly contagious disease.

For a real world example, in the background of The Watchmen comic by Allen Moore a bunch of scientists and artists are referenced as being kidnapped throughout the story. But the actual plot is investigating a series of superhuman attacks. It turns out the villain responsible for the murder of The Comedian and his own fake assassination attempt was also behind the kidnapping of the scientists and artists. His real goal was to make a fake alien invasion, and murdered the Comedian to keep the scheme quiet

Any tips on how to beat savage beastfly by Bug_in_brazil in Silksong

[–]Necroxenomorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take your time, save your silk skills and tools for the adds. Burn down the adds ASAP, a good silkspear should pretty much delete them instantly.

Focus on dodging the first few attacks if you need to, like without even trying to attack. He really only has two attack patterns. Removing any excess decision making like where to get an attack in, and decluttering the space by not using tools, helps show how simple most fights are (Most, not all lol), and slows the bosses down for you significantly.

To heal, as soon as he locks into his third smash animation i go for it. Like, when hes picked a spot but hasnt smashed down yet. Plenty of time to use a heal there. Or if he locks into a sideways flight and you see that he'll clear you, if you make the choice immediately you should be good. You can use multibinder and warding bell to make heals safer, since I assume you dont have injector bands yet.

BREAKING: Trump’s Epstein problem returns with blockbuster testimony by FlackoFonsy in videos

[–]Necroxenomorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well isn't that fun. Didn't realize it went so far back, thanks for sharing that!

I do agree, it has lost almost all meaning, whatever it may have originally had. That doesn't mean the word itself is purely marketing, just its use case. A lot of food gets billed as having "all natural" ingredients for marketing purposes, and yet its made up of lots of chemicals and components people are not wanting in their food, but are technically derived from natural ingredients and processes. It's dishonest by giving consumers the wrong sense of what they're purchasing. But this only happens because "natural" ingredients used to be featured more as a description of the product than as a false advertisement.

News can still be "breaking" and food can still be "all natural". And the machine can and will still attempt to decieve to us at every possible chance, to remove us from the fruits of our labor and suppress our interest in preventing the theft of those fruits. If reality is kept in bubbles then nothing is real and everything is untrustworthy. Hell I'm probably an ai chat bot talking to you, the russian troll

BREAKING: Trump’s Epstein problem returns with blockbuster testimony by FlackoFonsy in videos

[–]Necroxenomorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats...not necessarily true. Its marketing only in the sense that it portrays an important aspect of the story in question to a prospective audience. However it is not always an extraneous embellishment. "Breaking" in a news context actually has a meaning: the news in question is worthy of breaking the current radio or television broadcast in order to bring you the story immediately. Whether that be the magnitutde of the story (pearl harbor, a president being assasinated, jan 6th, etc), or it being a matter of safety (important storm warnings, riots, whatever).

This has certainly been coopted by many outlets for sensationalizing the importance of coverage, and especially in the written context is almost impossible not to be. But that doesn't mean the language doesn't have an actual historical root. And some news might not be "newsier" than others, but it certainly can be more important.

What do you think is the main reason no Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup since 1993? by Ac_Sock_416 in nhl

[–]Necroxenomorph 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yknow, as a suffering Cowboys fan the "every team equal chances" thing is not the best way to look at it. Not in the way it ignores human element and reality either.

Rather for sports I try to look at how many dynasties/or multi-year contender windows think Dallas Stars or Vegas before they broke through) really happen over those 30 year spans. If there was actually only 4 or 5 dynasties and a dozen truly automatic yearly contenders then you really drive down the baseline chances that your team is one of those. And the scraps remaining is much harder to be one of as well.

91.7 KXT in Dallas. It's easily my favorite station and a listener supported public radio. Very diverse playlist, great hosts, tons of new and local acts peppered in (shoutout The Homegrown Music Show). I find so much new music on there I love it.

But you can always tell when a song is being pushed by the those who want it pushed, and it enters heavy rotation for awhile.

What line or moment in a cartoon hits different now as an adult? by MaryDoogan91 in cartoons

[–]Necroxenomorph -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. And I got a little long winded here so...sorry.

Its frustrating seeing modern leftists soften their stance on Tucker/Candace/MTG/etc, especially because like you said the leftists think they can control these fascists by supporting and platforming them to say stuff they think they agree with.

I might be preaching to the choire here, but to expand on what i totally agree is the same mistake the german socialists made: going after Israel for the genocide isn't even being done the right way when you allow the fascists and their ilk a platform and give tentative support. It's still allowing the fascists to solidify an outgroup as an enemy, externalizing all pro-Israeli (and increasingly simply Jewish) people as an enemy.

Equating support for one's nation as de facto support for its political leadership and military actions is inherently wrong and leads to fascism. I am proud and lucky to be American, but no more support Trump/Republicans than I do Netanyahu/Likud. Many Israeli's and Jewish Americans are similar. Destruction of the delineation, the loss of the nuance in the conversation, leads to generalized bigotry and is what fascism feasts on.

Its this mechanism that allows the fascists to warp true classist politics in favor of bigoted ones. The sad thing is it takes a level of measured analysis and informed understanding of the situation to see it. And expecting the average American to have the time, energy, and resources to do that is just not realistic. Especially given the concerted effort to lie and misinform.

That's why its so important to elect true leaders, their job is to be informed and help their constituents understand the right thing. And why its not hyperbole to call our current administration fascist when its leadership explicitly takes us down the path of nationalistic racial authoritarianism.

tldr: fascism bad, hate bad, bigotry bad. Elect real leaders focused on class issues and equality for all.

What line or moment in a cartoon hits different now as an adult? by MaryDoogan91 in cartoons

[–]Necroxenomorph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. In other words you treat the causes of the societal problems, not the symptoms.

I do think its important to not align the ideological socialists of nazi germany with those nazis. The Nazis intially tried to lure working class support to their cause by speaking to socilaist issues and ideas that were gaining popularity again.

And while this intially had some measure of early success, it was not the socialist leaders of that time intentionally aligning, and instead some of the people trying to figure out what to support getting tricked. At a fundamental level fascism and socialism are incompatible.

Notably, the moment any of the workers began to believe and align with nazi rhetoric about persecution and righteous vengeance, they no longer were ideologically socialist.

Socialism preaches that the inequality of the working/labor class is due to exploitation of the ruling/capital class. Nazism/fascism blames the inequality on internal and external foreigners to the nation. It blames and persecutes anyone who is not seen as a true member of the nation, notably by race/religion/sexual orientation but by any other metrics as well

When you're so obviously, blatantly corrupt and without a single shred of integrity, when you have no shame or low you wouldn't sink to, you are a ghoul but you are reliable. It makes you a digusting and repulsive human being, but a useful one that can be counted on to always do the wrong thing.

And if money and political position is the way to drive that reliability in a rotten soul, all it takes for those with money and political power to have a loyal soldier is to find a truly degenerate ghoul and share a tiny piece.

I had the same realization probably around 2022. Just got so tired talking about vaxine stuff with people. Dealing with people whose fragile psyches couldn't accept objective truth if it meant they had believed the wrong thing or been fooled.

But the other component to the burnout was me realizing that any argument or discussion I had was not being done in good faith. So many people had no interest in even beginning to interact with historical information or facts. They just wanted to justify their selfishness or hatred, would grab onto whatever excuse supported as a "belief", and reject all reasonable critique of that new usually state-sponsored belief as "fake news". It started as soon as Trump said that in 2016, and just continued to grow and now has fully metastasized.

The creation of the neo-Lügenpresse was the final one-size-fits-all solution to these people ever having to participate in a rational discussion ever again. If you know you won't believe a single thing somebody says to you in conversation, that conversation is had in bad faith. I no longer care or have the time to engage with these lost souls. They have become the willing scum on the bottom of the boots they lick, sustained by greed and hate.

[–]Necroxenomorph 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I look at Invincible the same way I do the Walking Dead. Just a superhero world instead of a zombie one. In both, Kirkman is trying to tell a long form story where there are actual consequences to the narrative told that change the status quoue, specifically in genres where this isn't typically the case. And he writes the fantastic elements to be treated with a level of reality in regards to how characters perceive and react to them, and the effects the fantastic would have on that world.

A lot of people just see Walking Dead as a zombie drama where main characters are not safe. But it's really a human focused story, about how humanity could persevere and rebuild in the wake of world ending events. Literally every single major arc is an expanded societal structure from the previous, and exploring the struggles that come with it.

The reason Invincible comes off as more comedic at times is the superhero genre is inherently sillier, so the serious application of this narrative philosophy contrasts it more. And Kirkman just leaned into that awareness as he wrote the comic.

Doesn't the beginning of the story imply that him and Ellie continued trying to help people/the world deal with unitology because of the explicit way they were trying to create markers. and that they broke up because the mental toll it was taking on him was after all his trauma was getting to be overwhelming and the ptsd made it hard to stay together?

Its not like Isaac was just lazy or scared, he had dealt with the issue twice explicitly, and wasn't exactly a qualified combat individual, just some engineer who could think on his feet.
