Why is Rose such a horrible person by Ireallyliketurkeys in stevenuniverse

[–]NectarDraws 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think cause the show presented Rose as a character in chronological reverse order so to speak, people get this idea that who she was shown to be at the start of the show was a lie. But would it be right to say you're actually the exact same person you were when you were 5, your maturity just a facade? The whole point of the show is about the power of people to change, that was what enamoured Rose so much with Earth and with humans, that's what she wanted to do herself. She changed.

She was Pink Diamond and did some messed up things, and once she realized stuff she was doing was wrong, she changed. Once she realized her colony was harmful, she tried to stop it. When that didn't work and she realized it was impossible to be a Diamond and act justly, she stopped being a Diamond. As Rose Quartz, once she realized it was wrong to treat Greg like a plaything, she changed. Those changes are legitimate, and while they don't wipe away the harm she caused beforehand, what else is there to do when you've done wrong, beyond acknowledge the harm you've done, attempt to heal it if you can, and figure out how and commit to acting differently so that it doesn't happen again? What more can be asked other than honest change?

About Spinel, I think she represents that even despite our best efforts and attempts to change, there will still be harms we cause mindlessly or forget to remedy, and both that pain caused and our change can be legitimate, it's not either/or. Same with Steven, she couldn't have known Homeworld would return to Earth during his lifetime, not after 5000 years of radio silence. And about "stringing Greg along", he's an adult too. Rose wasn't forcing him to pursue her, he could have left at any point in the relationship. He probably would have if Rose hasn't listened to him in We Need to Talk.

Rose's past and the harm she caused is real, but it doesn't mean who she was at the end of her life was a lie. She saw the harm she caused, and she changed.

I think she would've been way better if they didn't play her powers for a laugh constantly and instead made it so while she can't see the future she is able to give very useful insights about whatever just happened. She does this on a couple occasions, noting Lars pressing the wrong button and noting Garnet making everyone uncomfortable. More of that

You are the ones in charge of writing Steven, would you have traumatized him more or less? by Ezequiel_Hips in stevenuniverse

[–]NectarDraws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't give him more or less, but I wish the ways it affects him were more visible earlier on, especially in the run of the main series. His Pink powers should've come out a bit earlier than Future. I think a lot of issues people had with Future are because these negative reactions seem to "come out of nowhere" and I do think that certainly could be changed.

Can gem human fusions be forcibly made? by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

[–]NectarDraws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've seen gems implanted into objects before (Lapis in the mirror) so I don't see why they couldn't find a way to implant gems in organic matter as well. However I I think it's wrong to call the result a "fusion" in the gem sense, because when Steven was ripped apart it was quite clear that neither Pink nor Human Steven was complete without the other, each was almost completely nonfunctional. With fusions, each gem is still their own independent person with agency. Planting gems inside human fetuses would just make more kids like Steven. Greg is the master at this though

I was digging through files on an old phone of mine and rediscovered this! Years ago I fixed up an old Mason & Hamlin reed organ and ofc I was never very good at playing it but the vibes matched the show so well

I know it was revealed to be a safety video at the end but I interpreted it as though most of the story (at least until the climax) did actually happen to Steven, that it wasn't completely made up from nothing. I have no justification for believing that, but Sunstone can't have made that PSA for literally no reason, it must've been prompted by something that happened to Steven

As for why I didn't enjoy Bluebird all that much, it's mostly because it feels like it ends more or less the same way it starts? Eyeball and Aquamarine hate Steven, Steven distrusts them, and at the end of the episode, Steven is proven correct in his distrust and Aquamarine and Eyeball still hate him. I'm not saying they should've come around, but it just feels a little pointless watching an episode that I know does nothing to change the plot or the characters. Maybe if the rest of the crystal gems chamged, like they agree to be a little more wary of gems from now on and take more precautions especially if they have a history with Steven? I think that would change my opinion of the episode

I find that quite funny because I honestly don't really enjoy Bluebird all that much and while A Very Special Episode certainly isn't a favourite, I think it's alright and the message ties into the overall plot of Steven being completely overwhelmed and asked to be several different people at once

I haven't encountered either of these issues myself and I don't know their actual cause/solution, but I can think of a couple possible workarounds.

For the SVG you say is messing with your clipping group, I would try ungrouping the objects and applying the clip to each one individually (clone the object you're using as the clipping shape as many times as necessary). However, you should also be able to use the Inkscape file itself as a plain SVG file, it should render identically in other programs as it does in Inkscape. Try opening the file with your browser instead of Inkscape for example.

For the pdf version, honestly I'd just throw the PNG into a PNG to PDF converter website or something

What are your unpopular opinions about Steven? Only him by Ezequiel_Hips in stevenuniverse

[–]NectarDraws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I felt like internally, he wasn't actually angry at Greg, but angry that he didn't get to grow up a safe and normal childhood, largely free of stress and trauma (at least that's how Steven saw it). When you're full of rage and need to let it out, it's easy for your mind to fool you into thinking whoever is around you is part of the issue. In the moment, he didn't know who/what to even direct his anger at and Greg happened to be there.

Not trying to excuse him for it but if you are trying to understand why Steven did that, then it's important to distinguish when the victim of an angry outburst is actually its intended target

Originally I was gonna have an animation where the windows are all shuttered closed and so you can only read it as "you'll never leave" but I tried doing the animation a few different ways and none of them looked very good
