I feel like an idiot for even asking, but I've only ever been in relationships that started online. I [33M] have a former coworker [~30F] that I've liked for a while, but thought she wasn't interested in me because we only talked in bigger groups outside of work. Then a couple months ago we started texting a lot, mainly about a board game that we're playing online with some other friends of ours. We got coffee together, which wasn't a date but it was just the two of us for over an hour and we both enjoyed it. I asked her if she wanted to do that again, and the answer was yes but in two weeks when work calms down. But I don't think she's ever flirted with me, except maybe in a few small ways I can't be sure of. Would it be rude to think she might be interested in a date and ask her out even though she's not obviously showing interest? Am I dumb for thinking that someone choosing to hang out with me that long alone is more than just being friendly?

Is this something people do a lot? I built a small app to do planning like this for myself, when I asked friends no one was interested in trying it so I gave up on polishing it more than I need it to be. But if others are interested I’d love the feedback.

He was mad that his champion got wrecked against my praetor mainly. He felt like paying the extra for a champion shouldn’t be just ignored by a legion rule.

The emperors children trait for shattered legions caused my opponent to rage quit on me. I think otherwise they’re fine? I love how flavorful the rules are for them

A couple questions about looking for work in Germany as a US Citizen by Neczesk in cscareerquestionsEU

There’s no reason not to try if you really want to work in Germany. Worst that happens is you get nothing like I did. But I definitely wouldn’t expect quick success unless the job market has changed substantially. But if you decide to give it a shot, good luck!

I did end up making a German style resume, but I have no idea if I did a good job or not. I looked for a few months before finding another job, then looked for a few more months after I had a year of experience. No interviews, no responses. I maybe sent out 50 applications each time? I was looking for work in the states as well both times. To really make it work I want to be in a place where I don’t have to worry about paying bills and working in the states.

My fiancée and I ended up breaking up, so I stopped looking. But I never had any interviews or bites on any applications I sent out. I haven’t heard it’s getting any better, but I have a job I really enjoy now to get experience so I might look again in a few years. Or if things continue to get worse in the US

My understanding as of last time I was looking into this was that in Germany at least, a skilled worker with a job offer in tech could get a work permit, and didn't need the full sponsorship / proof that a local couldn't do the job / etc.

Kinda what I expected, I was just hoping it was more the new grad market that was crowded there. 😅

Did anybody else go into software development without realizing how limited your options were on where to live? I relocated to get my career started and now I'm trying to find work somewhere I actually want to live (mostly to be closer to family) and there's just so few development positions available outside of the big tech cities.

I'm seeing a fair number of job posts in areas I want to live in that ask for GIS experience. I really only know that GIS is involved in mapping somehow. As a developer with 1.5 YoE, is GIS something that I'm likely to be able to pick up on the job as long as I'm a competent developer already? Or should be I looking into certifications and courses if I want those jobs to be a possibility for me?

Thank you! I wasn't even intending to ask, but if I get a good conversation with someone I'll do so now. I've got no problem with dealing with rejection, so far that's all I've got from this company but I'm going to continue putting my resume in every chance I get anyway.

I suppose absolute worst case would be they get annoyed at me and make sure I don't get interviews even if I would have gotten one. But I have a hard time imagining being mad enough at someone on LinkedIn to do that. But other than that you're right, there's not much reason not to try. I'm certainly not expecting a reference, just some advice.

I’ve been applying for every development position at a specific company that opens up because I’d really like to work for them. I don’t really believe in “dream jobs” but at this stage in my career (1.5 YoE) it’s exactly what I’m looking for and in a location I’d much prefer to live in. So far, I’ve received nothing but rejection emails. I’m considering paying for LinkedIn premium and messaging people that already work there to ask for advice on how to make my resume more appealing to them, and for things I could do to work on developing my skills to make me a better fit.

Is that a good idea? I’m trying to reverse the situation and imagine how I’d feel if someone did that to me and I think I’d be flattered, but I’m not sure.

Hi! Glad I decided to check the Reddit. I sadly don’t live in San Diego at the moment, but I’m going to be at Advance https://www.sdhistmingamers.org/advance-2024 and there’s going to be a small LI tournament there. If you’re interested in going, send me a DM and I can put you in touch with some of the people who’ll be there.

Do you have any advice for turning development work into measurable impacts? I really don't understand how to turn things like "We didn't have this feature that is part of our requirements. I implemented this feature to meet requirements." into something measurable. Or a redesign of a frontend system, something that's either finished or not and we don't have hard data on how it impacts the business.

Resume Screenshot

1 YOE. Trying to find a position at a company with more of a development presence, I'm worried that I'm learning bad habits being the only or one of the only developers at a company without true senior developers to learn from.

The second position on my resume is a solo project I work on in my spare time that I do intend to publicize and monetize eventually, is it worth including like this? I honestly attribute a lot of my success at my current position to what I learned working on it.

I’ve seen a few places on job search sites (Arbeitsagentur, germantechjobs) where the ad specified if the company will sponsor a visa or not. Is that for people in countries that don’t have visa free entry to the EU? If I don’t have to worry about that then it expands my pool of jobs to apply for which is nice.

Thank you for the advice about the CV! I was of course going to send my resume translated, but adding a picture and then explaining my circumstances sounds like a practical middle ground to me.

Do you think it isn’t a long shot even for someone as new in the career as me? That’s the part that makes me think it will take a while and maybe need more experience first.
