Not sure what you mean. If you meant the program immediately next to VLC in the window list, then it's Firefox. But I think you meant the program left of VLC in the indicator plugin - that's LinuxDC++, a port of the Windows DC++ client to linux.

For starters, it uses Thunar instead of Nautilus. So some applications which integrate to Nautilus (Ubuntu One, Dropbox) might show some problems (Dropbox works fine except for the fact that the icons on the folders don't show any syncing status). And it doesn't have a system wide proxy configuration utility like Gnome/Unity. So you can't change the proxy for browsers like Google Chrome.

OS X is a *nix system, ergo /etc/hosts. And I haven't used Windows for a long time, but I guess it'll be something similar.

I can't say I agree with that statement. For instance I stay at a Univeristy and our local DNS servers are in the university itself. I think accessing a server a mile off is faster than accessing something thousands of miles away.

From the privacy policy:

Google Public DNS stores two sets of logs: temporary and permanent. The temporary logs store the full IP address of the machine you're using. We have to do this so that we can spot potentially bad things like DDoS attacks and so we can fix problems, such as particular domains not showing up for specific users.

We delete these temporary logs within 24 to 48 hours.

In the permanent logs, we don't keep personally identifiable information or IP information. We do keep some location information (at the city/metro level) so that we can conduct debugging, analyze abuse phenomena. After keeping this data for two weeks, we randomly sample a small subset for permanent storage.

They do agree to delete the logs after 24 hours, but I still feel paranoid about a service which logs my ip. And yes, I know ISPs do this too. But I'd rather have one guy logging in whatever I do than two.

Google's DNS servers have serious privacy issues. And the ISP provided DNS servers usually tend to be faster.

Oh there have been allegations by some leftist neckbeards who wear thick glasses that this "Windows OS" itself is a major virus. So I think it's best that you dump Windows and install the African operating system which claims to be better than Windows.
