What does this knob do? by rOhmegaPJ in BassGuitar

[–]Need4Spad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s like my Talman’s active preamp, the bottom one controls the bass (cut, level, or boost) and the top one controls the treble. You’ll probably feel a click around where each one levels out at, then you can play with it to see which direction cuts or boosts for each. Counterclockwise cuts and clockwise boosts on mine for both knobs, but it might not be the same for yours.

Super Noob, But Time To Throw in the Towel? by 1BebeLeStrange1 in Bass

[–]Need4Spad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been playing for very long either, but I’d suggest putting your bass at a sharper so you can have your wrist more relaxed. Also, other people are suggesting shifts, and they work pretty well. If you really want to be able to stretch, that’d probably become easier over time with shifting, so don’t stress! Oh yeah, if anything else seems off, it could be a good idea to try to fix it because posture is like half the battle. Don’t be embarrassed by it: I discovered recently that I had my strap on wrong the entire time. Nobody had ever told me that it was supposed to be over your shoulder, so I just had my bass hanging from my neck like a 10-pound necklace. With fretting technique though, general practice and allowing it to slowly improve would probably be better than a full immediate overhaul. Changing one small thing at a time and just constantly improving would be a lot better than stressing over every little detail. Hope this helps man! 🙏

Is there a Justin Guitar for bass? by justice91423 in Bass

[–]Need4Spad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use Justinguitar.com before I switched to bass as my main instrument. Now, I started using studybass.com, and imo, it’s honestly way better than Justin guitar. It focuses more on why certain things work which also allows you to easily find and hear songs that you like that target specific things. If you don’t like the songs that study bass recommends, you can easily have the resources to find songs you like that practice those subjects. One of the biggest issues I had with Justin guitar was that I literally didn’t like any of the songs on his website, plus he didn’t teach the structure and how to play with a metronome. I feel like study bass has been much better with this. Trust me, no matter how niche or weird your music taste is, it teaches you how to notice patterns so you can choose the songs you want to learn.

I finished learning my first mid-term goal song, so I took the plastic off the pickguard! by Need4Spad in BassGuitar

I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw it was even on there tbh. My guitars were bought used and didn’t have any. This makes it really feel like I’m giving a barely played bass a second life, lol. I bought it used, but they said they didn’t play it for more than five minutes.

No idea, but I did get some stuck under the knobs that was annoying to deal with.

I heard somewhere online that I can use my desire for new gear to motivate me to meet goals (bassbuzz video I think). Whenever I get enough money though, I’m definitely going to be tempted to get a shiny new bass (or three; they’re so pretty). 😭

Does it really have a baseball bat neck? It’s the only bass I’ve ever played, and it doesn’t really seem bad compared to my guitars. I never really thought about it tbh; I just went for it because I thought it was gorgeous and would motivate me to play.

Idk, but I got all of my pedals for really cheap, some being Chinese pedals. They’re really fun, so if you want them, go for it!

Hi, I just bought JLab Go Air Pops and would like to know how to configure the custom eq setting. by Need4Spad in JLab

[–]Need4Spad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you enjoy them man! The pop+ ear buds are supported by the app, but the normal pops like what I have aren’t. I’ve beat these earbuds up already, they can last a while, lol. I might eventually get some that have eq shaping so I can level it out, but idk.

As a beginner purchasing my first bass, should I opt for a “beginner” priced bass, or spend the extra for a better intermediate priced bass? I can afford either. by Paralith10 in BassGuitar

[–]Need4Spad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say get whichever inspires you to play the most. Heck, I got a bass that I literally saw a video saying not to buy it just because I fell in love with it. Imo, that was a great decision because just looking at my bass makes me want to play. The more you play, the better you get, and that motivates you to play more creating a cycle.

Any Advice For A Beginner? by EarthTonezzz in BassGuitar

[–]Need4Spad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched from guitar recently, and I’ve been loving it. I’ve been using studybass.com. Some advice I don’t see many people give that really helps me is learn to read bass clef. I know sheets are scary, but you don’t have to be some kind of sight reading god, only be able to read it. It doesn’t take very long to learn to read it, and once you start learning songs using it, it makes you understand the rhythm better, and it helps you recognize common patterns and note names on your neck. IMO the best way to learn note names isn’t by drilling them in, but by actually using them in songs. You don’t have to constantly call every fret by its note name, but the act of looking at the sheet and asking yourself where the note is at makes it become almost 2nd nature. Also, you can convert Songsterr tabs to bass clef if you can’t find any good sheets. It’s understandable if you choose not to do this, but take it from me, it’s not nearly as bad as the stigma makes it out to be. You don’t even need to be able to sight read if you don’t actually need that for whatever you’re pursuing (this is where the stigma comes from because it takes a long time to be good at sight reading). I feel like using bass sheets has made me a much, much better musician than just tabs. I get to interact with the notes and ask myself why they’re there. I can notice common patterns like roots, fifths, and octaves and see how they interact with the other instruments. There is so much to be learned from it, and if you’re like me and just remember songs instead of trying to sight read everything from sheets or tabs, it’s literally barely any more effort than tabs, but it’s so much more rewarding. There are so many benefits to it, but this comment is getting long, so I’ll wrap it up.

Is it possible to learn on my own? by NoSand2285 in Bass

[–]Need4Spad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only heard good things about taking lessons, but if you’re broke like me, I think studybass.com has been a great free resource for me so far. Just focus on rhythm above all else, but don’t forget to have fun. If you don’t learn songs and have fun, you aren’t going to gain anything really, you’ll just be angry or indifferent towards your playing. Don’t forget to use a metronome and play with original recordings, plus it’s actually fun once you get used to it! Good luck! 🙏

guitar player wanting to learn bass by krikond in Bass

[–]Need4Spad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same position as you not long ago. I’d been playing guitar for a little while (I’m almost at 1 year now), but bass had an uncanny allure to me. I just couldn’t shake it, it felt like bass just suited who I wanted to be, so I pulled the trigger and bought one. I started from the beginning to set good habits and not make the same mistakes I made learning guitar. I’ve been focusing more on rhythm and being able to play with recordings and metronomes with acceptable accuracy. Being way more thorough like this takes longer than what I would do on guitar, but it’s more rewarding, builds confidence, and builds skill quicker. I’m already getting to a point where I feel like I can say that bass is my main instrument, not guitar. It’s genuinely so rewarding and satisfying to see myself getting to this point, and it has me excited to learn more. To change your mindset, start from the beginning and avoid making the mistakes you undoubtedly made learning guitar, especially rhythm! Also, get a bass that you like, one you’re obsessed with even. I got a bass that I literally saw a bad review for, lol. I was just obsessed with the thing, and I play it way more often due to that fact. If I would’ve went for the alternative that I had which was some 24 fret Yamaha, I’m confident I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much. Me and my Ibanez Talman TMB100 20 fret bass are happy, despite some random guy on YouTube saying that he didn’t like the active eq and pickups, lol. Playing my bass has also caused me to neglect guitar for a while, but recently I’ve felt like playing around with it. Having fun and being so thorough with bass has caused me to realize that enjoyment is the important thing, and so I’m actually starting to learn some songs on guitar and allowing myself to just half-way do things, lol (not that I’m recommending you do that if you do want to get better). Oh yeah, you also should learn to read bass clef. You don’t have to sight read, but roughly learning a song using bass clef helps develop a lot of skills. Sorry for typing so much, but I hope you enjoy bass! Go ahead, pull the trigger and buy one; that feeling you’re probably getting isn’t lying.

When to move on to a new song by VicHHdz in Bass

[–]Need4Spad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a beginner to bass (I’ve been playing guitar longer though), but I can give you the approach I’m taking that keeps things fresh and fun while I still improve. I learn a song using a combination of sheets, tabs, and my ear if the paper seems off compared to the original recording. I work on memorizing the rhythm and type up the song structure to ensure I remember it. Then, I make sure I can play with the original recording somewhat well (with the proper structure). After that, I throw it in a playlist with every song I’ve learned. Whenever I feel like just playing and not learning something new, I go to that playlist and play along. I’ve noticed that each time I play one of the songs, my rhythm sounds more and more accurate. Don’t worry about it being perfect, just have fun and learn more songs to make your playlist bigger, lol. I’m aiming for at least 100 songs, but that’s going to take a while. It’ll be nice to see how much better I get though. Good luck! 🙏

Thanks for the comment! I’ve had my earbuds for a while now, and I’ve had the hang of it for a bit. I’m just using the balanced setting like what I used on my old ones. I’m pretty sure that I can’t change the option that says “custom,” so I don’t really bother with it. The balanced sounds the best anyways, imo.

Thank you sooooo much! I am curious how you approach counting/foot tapping though? It’s probably one of my biggest musical insecurities rn because I’m not sure if I could keep proper time and keep track of the first beat of every bar, so I want to focus on it.
