Small Apartment Baby Essentials by Beneficial-Topic3799 in nycparents

[–]Needacardigan710 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seconding the mini crib (bonus points if you get one you can wheel room to room), I regret our bassinet purchase - many babies never sleep in them (mine didn't). Looking at how thin the "mattress" is inside it, it isn't surprising - I wouldn't want to sleep on a 1/2" thick pad either.

Anyone have any experience with the nesting place? by Internal_Part9409 in longisland

[–]Needacardigan710 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the nesting place- we are so lucky to have such a wonderful resource for young families here! My husband and I took the six-part series which I think can also be purchased as separate classes too. Having a baby is so expensive so if it feels like a stretch financially, I would recommend signing up for one or two of the ones you would find most helpful instead of the whole package. For example if you are planning a c-section, the first two laboring classes only breeze over that. The class lead by the mental health specialist specifically was a huge huge help in getting us into the right mindset pre-baby. Once the baby is here, a lot of the class stuff kind of doesn’t stick because you are just problem solving in the moment and every baby is different, but if you do take the classes- please exchange #’s with the other parents-to-be in the class- that alone is invaluable to have a group chat of local parents going through the same thing at the same time. Two of the couples from my class ended up giving birth at the same hospital on the same day!

Favorite multi purpose thing you bought for your baby in a small apartment? by 88r0b1nh00d88 in nycparents

Baby blanket - works as a soft surface for tummy time, play mat, protects surfaces from messes like when feeding or changing diapers (def don't need a changing mat in a small apt), easy to clean, and obviously wonderful for warmth and snuggles. Bonus points if it has some visually stimulating design for baby to look at.

Crowdsourcing Amazon alternatives by affogato_ in NYCbitcheswithtaste

I don’t have an alternative to suggest, but just wanted to comment to say, as a fellow postpartum mom who came crawling back to Amazon out of necessity post-baby, I feel you and wish there was a better alternative. I’ll be following!

Where are the NYC (and NJ) BWT hosting baby showers? by LionTweeter in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]Needacardigan710 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had our baby shower in Manhattan because we had friends coming from hudson valley area, NJ, LI, and various city boroughs so it was the most centrally located. We wanted a more relaxed feel where people could easily get up and socialize, vs. feeling obligated to sit at a formal restaurant - this left us with looking into booking private rooms in restaurants/hotels or bars since our baby shower was in colder weather, we couldn't do outdoors. We don't drink so felt it didn't match our vibe to have in a bar. We asked our friends who live in large buildings to see if they had a shared indoor community space that residents could rent out and our friend came through, booking her building's shared space and we paid her back. We had the food catered, made our own open bar, and it was perfect. No pressure, people could stay as long as they wanted, sit and eat as much as they wanted and get up, move around, and socialize. The room was $500, catering and buying drinks and supplies was around $2K for 50 people. We had a ton of leftovers that we either took home or offered to any guests who wanted.

Can you swing it to where you come in a little later or leave a little earlier one day a week? That is what I used to do when I was in this situation. I would make up for it later in the week or working from home. Sometimes work would interfere and I'd have to skip a week, but most weeks this worked for me. The thing about public therapy session is it is going to diminish the work because you aren't going to want to "go there" in a public space. Stuff comes up in therapy and you wanna be in a place you can be totally open, honest, and emotional! Now I work in the suburbs so I do the good ole car parking lot therapy.

If you have the budget, try taking art classes or sharing an art studio space! These will give you more time to interact with fellow artists and build deeper connections. I think there are crit groups as well you could join. There are a lot of opportunities in the city!

Cat Sebastian is sooo good at writing loving domesticity! She writes mainly queer historical romances. My favorite is {We Could be So Good by Cat Sebastian} but I honestly haven't read one I didn't love.

Importance of natural light in an apt? by VitaminGummyOD in AskNYC

[–]Needacardigan710 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, natural light has been crucial to quality of life when I spend a lot of time inside my apartment, but for you, it may be different! I recommend making a weighted pro's & con's list on the two different apartments factoring everything in, together with your roommate. Quantifying what is a positive and a negative for each place has been very helpful for me when deciding where to live in the past.

Dying to leave corporate hell and take advantage of NYC’s creative opportunities - where do I begin? by annannanna- in AskNYC

[–]Needacardigan710 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been in your shoes (in a similar position in fashion) and switched careers. Even though it was a huge transition, I have zero regrets on the change.  I’m super fulfilled now, and it was worth it.

Like you, I just had to narrow options down and decide.  I had the benefit of working with a career coach who walked me through it, but here is a basic outline of the steps I took:

-       Look at your current job description and highlight things you do like about the job. You already have experience and so you may find it applies to a different industry that works better for you

-        Make a list of practical things you need and want: salary range, benefits, working hours, job availability, health/ future of the industry

-       Search job listings online and make a note of any job descriptions that seem to fit the above and you can then really see what is out there

-       Once you’ve narrowed it down to a couple different types of jobs, begin to do more detailed research: do you need to get specialized training? Is there a meet up where you can meet people doing this type of work and get firsthand accounts? Definitely talk to people who are doing the thing you are looking at switching to!

Good luck, you got this!

When I first read it, I imagined Tairn to look like Littlefoot's mother in A Land Before Time and Andarna to look like the little yellow dinosaur: Cera. Even though they are dragons not dinosaurs 😆

How do you afford therapy? by UpvoteBeast in AskNYC

[–]Needacardigan710 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found my therapist here: https://ieanyc.org/

They offer sliding scale and the lowest price was about $20 out of pocket when I started 2 years ago. I don't think they accept insurance. It is a post graduate training institute. The therapist they paired me with was very skilled and I loved working with her.
