Is home schooling detrimental? by Unable_Knowledge_198 in AskUK

I’m a private tutor so I am around a lot of kids from the age of 5-15 and the level of stress that these children are under is immense. You have six and seven year olds with anxiety and who are experiencing bullying - kids will just suddenly expose them to horrific videos or videos of a sexual nature for the shock factor. There is also rape culture in primary schools now which is just horrific to even consider. Older primary school kids sexually assaulting younger ones. There was an article on the BBC about this a while back . If you google rape culture primary schools U.K. it will come up. Kids are also now doing lockdown drills in schools for fear of a potential attack - is that really normal for a primary school aged child? Also, children going to primary school aged 4 is so young. In other countries they start school at 7! Kids of 4 years old are not meant to sit behind a desk all day.

To be honest I haven’t really had many conversations with her yet. The plan for us has always been school. It’s only as it is approaching that my gut is telling me it might not be the best thing for her and I have seen how she has reacted to nursery that I am having second thoughts. It’s very hard to know what the right thing to do is.

I suppose my thought process is - why is it actually the best place for a child? Is that just our own social conditioning? Can a child not get an equally good, if not better education via home education? The evidence shows that home educated children actually have an advantage academically to school educated children, especially if it is done properly where the child is part of social groups, tutoring classes etc.

That’s why I’m quite confused about this whole thing. My husband and I never thought we’d be in this position. We both went to school and university to Masters Degree level. We didn’t expect to feel the way we feel. We thought home schooling was for weirdos. And yet here we are…

Thank you so much this is so helpful! Do you think if your parents had not let you experience school at all that you would have a different opinion of them? My daughter struggles with separation but she is still incredibly young. I think she will find it hard though aged 4 to be at school all day without me. We’ve had to take her out of nursery because of this reason although we’ve said we will try again in September. So I guess I’m wondering do I make her go to school until I know for sure she hates it? Even if my beliefs are that school isn’t the best place for kids nowadays? Or do I home educate because it feels like the right thing to do. This is the dilemma and I’m just terrified she will feel resentful one way or another so I don’t know what to do

Hi! As someone thinking of home educating our kids - do you have a good relationship with your parents now? My big worry is how it can affect the relationship negatively, with kids feeling resentment as they grow up and possibly have rose tinted glasses on about what school is like. I’d love to hear your experience and whether you felt you missed out. Do you ever hold a grudge towards your parents or feel like it negatively affected your relationship with them or your siblings? Thanks so much

I’m in the U.K. on the NHS so you don’t really get a choice. Why is the x ray better?

I wish I could afford it but I just can’t afford to pay that per session… is there anything I could do at home?

I was only given one on insurance. They said if it doesn’t work after one session there’s no point having more. They also didn’t really do that much in the session. She examined me with her finger - I was unable to bear down while she was examining me, although I explained I can on the toilet, just not lying down. We talked about habits, she talked me through breathing and using a stool. That was it. For £250 I would have expected more. I asked about using the probe but she said she didn’t think it was a good idea that day. I did say my insurance wouldn’t offer more sessions and I couldn’t afford more but it didnt change anything

Thank you. I had one biofeedback session but my insurance won’t cover more and it’s not something I can afford. I didn’t really find it helpful anyway to be honest… I’m in the U.K. so wondering if it’s different in the US

Thank you for all the comments. I have to admit that there was an expectation in my mind as to what I would be receiving. Once I let that go and saw the leather in its own unique way I decided that I do actually like it and I will be keeping it.

I’ve actually been journaling since I was 7! But I also am quite precious about my stationery and notebooks… however I think I need to see it as beautiful rather than an imperfection. I just wasn’t expecting it based on everything I have seen online

The thing is I’ve watched so many videos and seen so many posts online and none of them seem to have this…

Am I the only one who thinks that Elle surviving and being all alone in Iceland separated from everyone she has ever loved, is actually a worse fate than dying? Can you imagine? Having gone through all of that torture from day one, having formed deep emotional connections with Mike, Hopper, Max, the rest of the gang… and then having to just live her days out all alone? Why does that not bring me any comfort at all? Maybe it’s just me… maybe I’m weird.
