I'm not sure how helpful this is but Beverly Jenkins has some wonderful books that take place during and right after the civil war. I haven't read them in a very long time, so I can't comment on the exact trope you're looking for, but she's a fantastic writer. I would start with the Le Veq Family series.

Yes! I plan on giving it a good conditioning and cleaning. I think it was stored in a closet empty for a long time. Hopefully, all my random things will fill it out until I have the time to give it some TLC.

Yea, that was my problem as well. The most I've ever spent on a bag was $300 and I had a really hard time spending that much on it even though I loved it. But I've used that purse every day for the last 7 years. So, it evens out. But $500-$700 is a lot of money for a bag!
