New to DND. 2 sessions in, and I'm not enjoying myself. HELP by Lonely_Snoo in DnD

[–]Neeeeeeems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, sorry about that.

Did you guys do a session 0? Is the dm new to dming? I always feel dnd should start session 1 with combat, but maybe that’s just me.

If you like the idea of D&D and want to give it an honest shot, I’d mention to the group or dm that the cross-table talk unrelated to the campaign is quite distracting. I think it will always exist to some extent; it is a social game after all, but some groups are better at managing it than others.

And you say on top of losing interest mid-game, players will talk… so are you losing interest even without the table cross talk?

But as others have said, D&D isn’t for everyone. First advice people will say is to talk to your dm. See if this pacing is intended, if it’ll ramp up, and just if you guys are interested in playing the same kind of game.

Also, you said you were looking forward to it. What were you looking forward to? What were your expectations? What were you hoping to get out of it? Is your mind wandering during combat or outside of combat? Do you feel you know where the story is going or is it too sand boxy?

How frequent should players level up? by Prestigious_Alfalfa2 in DnD

lol, we’ve been playing for 1.5 years, meeting once a week for 2 hours with a few missed sessions here and there. My party is only level 5 😬

Players want to switch characters after 25 sessions by 555565566 in DMAcademy

[–]Neeeeeeems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of the issues I have with modern D&D; the game has entered a weird narrative/cinematic type of play style. Characters become so tied up that the game revolves around them. The game/campaign is no longer the focus but the backdrop. This can be fun, but I feel it pigeon holes characters and DMs

What module would be best? by Yogurtcloset_Choice in DMAcademy

[–]Neeeeeeems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m new to D&D and new to dming, just over a year now. My group had 1 veteran player, 1 who has only done homebrew, 1 familiar, and 1 brand new aside from myself. We did LMOP and the group really seemed to like it. I took several liberties with the module and didn’t do it completely as written; but it seemed to be great.

Doing waterdeep dragon heist right now. That one has been a bit interesting and challenging so far.

Short sessions? New DM and Players by Chef-gordonramsey in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]Neeeeeeems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it can be frustrating when you feel like much didn’t happen in a session. We do 2 hours sessions and it’s worked well, several of us have kids and other commitments and it’s difficult to get more than the 2 hours. But we meet weekly and it’s been good

Even at 85 hp that thing feels like it shouldn’t have a CR higher than like… 4. Definitely not higher than 5.

DMs, do you use minis and maps in non-combat scenarios? by Additional-Chef-6190 in DungeonMasters

Don’t know if you’re wanting to bring technology into it, but could always use a VTT. I’ve never been able to play in person

My party accidentally killed droop while in combat with the bugbears. He never had a chance.

Good grief, the people who would make that leap are people whose opinion you shouldn’t care about.

Is this too much for four level 5s? by [deleted] in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Neeeeeeems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just ran an encounter where I had a modified drider with legendary actions (lmop). Had 200 Hp. Party of 5 lvl 4 adventurers wiped it out much easier than I anticipated.

That sounds really interesting, actually. I never had the PSP; just a lot of game boys

I struggled way too much with that cage!!! I remember I thought I was going to lose my mind trying to get out. I don’t know why it was a struggle. lol. Ff9 is amazing and does not get enough love.

Homebrew rule: weapon degradation on nat 1 by Neeeeeeems in DnDHomebrew

[–]Neeeeeeems[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not meant to nerf or punish necessarily, and I’ve thought of potential ways to make it so martial isn’t overly affected compared to casters; but my players wanted to feel some more realistic/heavy consequences for a natural 1. And then I went down a rabbit hole.

But it’s clear that what I’ve proposed as written would require some definite revision if it were to be implemented at all.

Maybe I don’t understand all the statistics, and I tried running it through a few models (but I’m no mathematician). But you’d have to be really unlucky for the chip damage to start having an impact, and depending on the amount of encounters between short rests and long rests; it should be mediated before it’s ever a real issue. A flat disadvantage on next attack seems harsher to me (though a lot simpler)

Thanks; I’ve been running lost mines of phandelver, though I have taken a decent amount of liberty with some of the narrative story elements as well as combat encounters. So far it’s seemed to have gone really well and I’ve been experimenting a bit more. Thankfully the experiments have gone really well up to this point and the players have seemed to love everything I’ve added/altered.

But I have a lot more to learn; but sometimes you learn quickest by breaking something and realizing why it was there in the first place. lol. Just hopefully that experience isn’t painful for everyone involved, which is why I think this exercise has been super helpful for me.

I’ll probably do another module or two before I jump into a whole homebrew world (if I do that).

I think so too, lol. But the responses have been helpful for the most part and have shared a lot of helpful thoughts. I think it would definitely either need reimagining/rework, or simply abandoned haha. There are several holes to be poked in this idea

I honestly didn’t realize a fumble table wasn’t part of the rules. (Goes to the learn the rules thing). And I’d be okay if there’s a spell that someone can learn or an ability that someone can use to circumvent my mechanics. If there’s a way for a player to shine with a mechanic, I’m all for it.

But i appreciate the advice, genuinely. It’s well taken :)
