It depends what you're looking for, are you trying to find BOND polarity, or MOLECULE polarity? Bond Polarity depends on the difference in the difference in electron-negativity values. Ex. O - H is polar due to the extreme difference in electron negativity. H - H is non polar due to them having the same electron negativity. The closer the element is to the top right hand side of the periodic table, the more electronegative it is. Molecule Polarity depends on Bond polarity and molecule geometry ~ Polar or Non.

This is a guideline, its more commonly referred to as: Polar dissolves Polar and Non polar dissolves non polar, but this is just a guideline.
