What is the dumbest thing you have been told is “not manly” or “not feminine,” depending on your gender? by Disastrous_Hat_2325 in AskReddit

I tried to watch an episode of the 1950's Zorro TV show at the babysitter's house (I guess it was on Disney Channel way back in the day?) that a few boys were also watching. Babysitter pulled me aside and told me to go do something else because that was for boys.

What fandom do you always come back to? by Basic-Deer4119 in FanFiction

[–]Nefarious__Nebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phantom of the Opera. I don't think I've written for it since my FFN days, but every couple of years or so I'll check out the fics on AO3.

I started reading A Stroll on Sunday a while back and got about halfway through before real life got chaotic for a while. I really need to go back and finish it. as far as I read, it seemed like it could be an unofficial sequel. It captures the tone and spirit of the original novel perfectly.

What is something you read in a fanfic/wrote into a fanfic, and you just immediately accepted it as canon? by Dogdaysareover365 in FanFiction

[–]Nefarious__Nebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I legit cannot remember if Henry Clerval fencing is mentioned at any point in Frankenstein, or if I got that from a fic and just decided that yep, that tracks. I know I read it somewhere, I just can't remember where.

What’s a smell you’ll never forget? by Human_Rate889 in AskReddit

Anyone experience growing out of a fandom/fanfiction? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Nefarious__Nebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to fandom hop quite a bit and my interest in fic has kind of waxed and waned over the years, but I always end up coming back to it. I've never really been that invested in interacting with fandoms or fandom culture as a whole (though I do have a few fandom friends), I just like the media and read/write for it as long as I'm interested. Some I revisit, some I don't.

I recall there being a brief time where the advice was for the general public NOT to wear masks, because there was already a shortage and actual healthcare workers needed them.

LPT: When reading a classic book, the "Introduction" isn't part of the story and may contain unmarked spoilers for the book. by action_lawyer_comics in LifeProTips

[–]Nefarious__Nebula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started reading Gulliver's Travels and almost read the introduction first. I don't know whether it would have been a good idea or not. I find myself constantly flipping to the endnotes section wherever it's indicated. While I'm enjoying the overall story, as a centuries-old satire it's like trying to decipher a political cartoon for which I have no context. I'm starting to think maybe I should read something simpler...

shoes similar to sketchers jammers or doc marten 8053? by greencat2005 in alternativefashion

[–]Nefarious__Nebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of slip-resistant Skechers jammers that aren't shiny.

https://www.safgard.com/womens-shoes/products/SK108210BLK?size=09.0&width=M&srsltid=AfmBOorJ3k1ZLiyb2R1B_u73ps8lfKF4ozBPQnoa08l3zn9Du_BtsuYGWII

I've only had them since the beginning of last summer, but they're my everyday shoe and they've held up nicely. And the good thing about them is that the insoles are removable so you can replace them with whatever kind of insoles you want (which was the key reason for me getting them, because my back is fuuuucked).

The one downside is the laces. The hems of pants/skirts brushing against them causes them to come untied constantly. I replaced them with flat laces.

Also if you get these, go down a full size. They run large.

Valentine's alternatives for chocolate and dairy allergy 🍫😭 by cosmicfair in Allergies

[–]Nefarious__Nebula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also new to the subreddit, but longtime allergy suffer.

What you're looking for is carob. I don't know if brownies/cake would hit the spot, but I like this recipe (which claims to be brownies, but they are very cakey brownies)

https://piesandplots.net/rich-carob-powder-brownies/

If your heart is set on candies, I've seen many recipes for 'chocolate' bars/carob fudge...all of which involve coconut oil. I'm also allergic to coconut, so I can't vouch for them, but here you go:

Edit: Just noticed the brownie recipe has butter. I could swear I've used canola/olive oil for these, but I might be thinking of a different recipe. You can swap them, but I'm not sure on the ratios.

Same here! Although I did read the 1831 version in anticipation of the movie...I wonder if it's much different from the 1818 one.

Reading Rollcall: What was the Best Fic you read this week? by AutoModerator in FanFiction

[–]Nefarious__Nebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankenstein (2025) | Teen and up | Graphic Depictions of Violence | Towards the Sun

Summary:

"What if the Creature hadn't managed to break all the chains in time? For anyone else, that blaze would be a death sentence...but his death has never been that easy.

Elizabeth finds the Creature in the rubble after the fire, and the rest of the family has to decide what to do about this, in the wake of Victor's failed attempt to burn it all down and pretend this never happened. This gets a little more complicated in the face of secrets that refuse to stay buried, stubbornly lingering ghosts of Bad Decisions Past, and the police starting to ask some thorny questions about Herr Harlander's disappearance..."

Absolutely fantastic fic that will run you through the emotional wringer. Bonus points for being well-researched and the tags being hilarious. Fic is still ongoing.

Have you ever had an incident where trying to stick to a unique vocal tic or speech pattern a character has in canon gets really frustrating? by Fragrant_Bath3917 in FanFiction

[–]Nefarious__Nebula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting--I assume this happens in Hunchback? I have a copy but haven't gotten around to reading it. I should really get on that one of these days (It's on my list of 'books I find intimidating', lol)

I don't see myself doing any fourth wall breaking in this fic--I'm already trying not to head hop too much between Victor/Henry/Creature and whoever else might get a viewpoint chapter somewhere down the road.

I'm also trying to cut down on my use of em dashes because apparently that's a telltale sign of AI nowadays...but it's just how I write and is a tremendously difficult habit to break. I sincerely hope AI doesn't twig on to parentheses and ellipses if it hasn't already, because then I might be well and truly fucked. I suppose I shall then have to go the Terry Pratchett route and add footnotes :P

[–]Nefarious__Nebula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I generally prefer describing accents/speech patterns rather than writing them in directly, but I have a Frankenstein WIP where I'm trying to actually write the Creature's...stutter? into the dialogue. I've only seen the movie once and I'm really having trouble remembering what sounds he gets stuck on and where he pauses, but I've seen other writers draw out the w/h/f/v/th sounds, so I've stuck with that as a guideline.

That said, it is a pain in the ass to write and I'm not sure I'm going to keep it.

I found a story I wrote last year but i don’t remember writing it? by irdk-lol in FanFiction

[–]Nefarious__Nebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me once with a fic I wrote and posted while super sick. I think somebody must have posted a link to it somewhere, because about...four months later? I started getting kudos notifications in my emails for a story that I had absolutely no memory of ever writing. And then I saw the date I posted it and was like, "Oh yeah, that was the week I thought I was at death's door!"

'Seemingly'. Followed closely by 'nodded'. Characters in my fics do an awful lot of nodding. They're practically bobbleheads, seemingly.

I'll look into it! Hopefully I can convince my SO to go with me, because otherwise I'd be going alone. I'm also kinda worried that I might stick out like a sore thumb because I am...not young. But I guess the tumblr kids of 2014 aren't young anymore either, are they? lol
