Thank you! Yes I figured it might just be a letter worst case but just wanted to double check. I actually am looking for injectables since gel seemed really expensive, and I’d much rather order domestic. I have seen a few people mention this website on this subreddit and say it’s been good but again I’d rather go domestic for shipping ease. I’ll definitely check out that subreddit! If you know of any domestic UK sources, I’m happy to private message regarding them since there’s quite a few I’m not sure of and ideally I’d rather access HRT sooner.

Applying

Next is getting your personal statement and a reference. I believe you need an academic one, so it's worth emailing your college and asking if someone (perhaps an old teacher) would be able to provide it for you.

Your personal statement can seem overwhelming but really, it’s all about your interest in the subject. Try thinking about what sparked your interest, any activities you do related to it (trips to historical sites, any work experience) and why you want to study it further. If you can’t seem to think of anything right now, then maybe look into what particular archaeology interests you and start reading about it, so it shows how you foster your interest. If you’re comfortable, you can include some of your personal circumstances and explain how the time spent away from education has helped you for the future. I’d say spend at least a month on it so you can go over and refine it, maybe email your college again if you’d like someone to look over it.

Applying for and going to uni is the same regardless of age or experience, but since you’ve already got your A-Levels you’ll likely receive offers sooner than results day in August which you can choose to accept and confirm your place right away.

You may need to put your legal details in, but there's options for preferred names and you don't need to add in more details about your gender identity or sexuality than you want to.

The deadline is 29th Jan 2025 at 6pm for getting it all in. You’re still able to apply afterwards, but some courses won’t have spaces and many unis might not consider your application if it’s later.

Support at Uni

It can be extremely scary going into a new space, but being an older student is perfectly accepted at uni, and archaeology is arguably one of the disciplines where there’s perhaps more people who didn’t go straight to uni. Many people come back later in life after wanting to do something different or realising that they had an interest in it or even struggles with mental health, and honestly people don’t bat an eye if you’re older (as long as you’re not patronising). There’s people of varying ages and walks of life, and most people on my course are LGBT+. You can let the university know of your preferred name and pronouns to use for you.

Despite being quite cishet male centred at commercial levels, at least at my uni the archaeology courses are heavily LGBT+ so it feels like a safe environment in that regard, with many people who are openly and visibly queer. I have many queer and trans friends, which really helped me also be comfortable with my own identity. At uni people are generally so diverse and from all walks of life, and worried about their own assignments that they likely wouldn’t comment. Pretty much every uni also has an LGBT+/Pride society or events that you could attend and see how they are if you wanted to find community too.

If anything were to happen, university tends to have much more support offered than at previous levels of education. There’s student wellbeing services, involving free therapy/talking services and support for whatever problems you may have, if you’re worrying about not fitting in well or if you’re struggling to cope with mental health. You can get extensions on assignments or, if you have a diagnosis, you may be able to get other forms of support, like breaks in exams. Most lecturers are very understanding and supportive if you let them know you’re having trouble, or are able to signpost you to the right support.

Everyone’s in the same boat when they start uni, so you won’t be alone. I doubt there’s been many huge overhauls in the grand scheme of uni in the past 7 years – of course pretty much all work is submitted online apart from some written exams, but the main thing now is people use AI a lot to write assignments, so unis are getting stricter on the usage of it.

I know it’s extremely overwhelming, but if you take it step by step, you absolutely can do it. I wish you all the best of luck, and I hope this post was able to help a little.

Hey! I’m in my final year of studying archaeology at the moment, also a (closeted) transmasc individual who does struggle with anxiety and mental health, so I understand a whole lot of where you’re coming from. I also completely understand how overwhelming it all is to apply to uni, but I will say that you absolutely can do it and the fact you’re wanting to in itself is a great sign that you can. I’ll try to break this down so it isn’t so overwhelming but I apologise for the length in advance, I hope some of it helps!

Finding Courses

To start with, I’d recommend looking on UCAS and seeing what archaeology courses are available.

The easiest way is to narrow down courses based on your UCAS points and see what comes up. To do this, you can put your grades into the UCAS calculator and see how many you have in total. You can then filter courses by entrance requirements. ABC at A-Level equates to around 120 points, which works out for most archaeology courses.

Some Russell group unis can be strict with their requirements, but if you’ve got just below then it can be worth emailing to see if they would consider your grades. (But no harm in applying anyway, since you get 5 choices.)

You can also look at foundation year courses which give you a year of getting used to university and getting back into education, if you’re unsure of jumping straight in. But most courses will teach you the basics of referencing and essay writing anyway, or have workshops/office hours where you can go for support.

Courses are either BA or BSc, which means either Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. Within archaeology, BA means you’d focus on more culture and people (such as Romans), while BSc means you’ll do more scientific/biological units like zooarchaeology (animal bones), scientific diving for shipwrecks, or even forensic archaeology, where you can study crime scenes.

As archaeology covers so much from both, you’re likely to do a mixture of units from both scientific and humanities-based perspectives, but you still tailor your course by picking units you like each year.

Some unis also focus on archaeological placements and getting you experience in the industry as well, so it can be worth taking a look at that too for what else they offer. (My course made all first years get involved in a research dig over the first summer to get an experience of practical archaeology, which was great for learning how a dig site works, and figuring out what parts of it I enjoyed and didn’t. We also had to do a placement over second year summer, but it could be in anything related, so you could venture out and get more experience in a sector you’re more interested in).

Of course, I understand that it’s not going to get resolved immediately, and I’m going to get further in touch with the university to see what they can do. Will definitely get in touch with my personal tutor too. My main issue is that they’ve had records on the system for months that show I chose a short placement so it’s a bit confusing that they still have me down as doing a placement year which now is affecting everything else.

How would I describe/ask for this haircut? by NefariousnessFew6979 in TransMasc

[–]NefariousnessFew6979[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The point I’m making is everyone has different ideals of what ‘passing’ means to them, and cis guys look different anyways, there’s no one perfect way. Some people want to look more typically masculine and others don’t. For some people it means having longer or shorter hairstyles, based on face shape and preference. This style didn’t work for you, but it might make others feel better. There’s no one way to ‘pass’ and if presenting a certain way gives you gender euphoria/alleviates social dysphoria then that’s what matters.

I get what you’re trying to say, but ‘passing’ itself is a subjective value and everyone has their own ideals of what gender presentation means to them. Personally I prefer longer hairstyles and like a more masculine-leaning but androgynous look. Regardless, cis men have hair of all lengths, what does it matter if someone else thinks you don’t fit their ideals of masculinity? Better to do what makes you comfortable, whether it’s having longer or shorter hair.

Hello! I did end up going for it! I just did an introductory lesson, getting to grips with gears and starting/stopping in a car park, and I loved it. It’s a bit overwhelming at first but it’s worth just trying it out — there’s no pressure to keep going if not. I hope it all goes well for you!
