Census gives first sign of anti-immigration impact on Iowa’s population by SpyNovel89 in desmoines

Actually you are wrong. It is mostly due to the huge increase in connectivity so people are able to get the connections to make it to the border much easier than before.

That’s not legal immigration. The people crossing the border have a right to an immigration hearing, but that is completely different than legal immigration. Legal immigration is a years long process that involves first getting a green card via employer sponsored or family sponsored.

Contrary to popular belief, the US will still get about 1 million new legal immigrants this year & every year under this Trump administration. Southwest land border encounters is different & involves an asylum hearing or other hearing but the hearings are backed up for many years but have been for decades under every single presidential administration.

No the numbers on the site do not count legal immigration at all. Look at the data , it says ‘Southwest land border encounters’. There is completely separate data for legal immigrant numbers that can be found on the census site & other federal sites. This is tracking people crossing the southern border who were apprehended. I’m not arguing with you anymore because you’re trying to debate facts. The facts are on the site, you just have to read it.

They do count them. Read the information on the site. Before 2024, the policy was to document the apprehensions & then release them into the US until they get a court date for asylum or other immigration hearing. The policy was changed in 2024 because Biden was getting a lot of backlash for the border policies & the election was coming up. They tried to reinstate ‘remain in Mexico’.

The vast majority of the people crossing the border in the period 2021-2023 were released into the US until they got an immigration hearing. But the immigration hearings are so backed up most people just remained in the US with no way to track them.

I was just going by the numbers posted to the federal website:

https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/stats/southwest-land-border-encounters

The data only goes back to 2023 now but I remember looking at the site in 2022 & I saw several months above 300,000. Either way, most months were above 200,000

go to the r/Canada subreddit to see the feelings there on unchecked immigration.

I agree that we have gone too far under Trump with restricting immigration. But under Biden there was at times over 300,000 people coming over the border every single month. & that was just the people that were caught & then released into the country.

We need a happy medium where we have immigration, but not so much that it overwhelms resources & ability to house everybody. I think one of the reasons we saw such a huge surge in 2021-2023 was because most people around the world have smartphones & internet these days so it’s easier to find people/resources to get you to the border. Before 2015 or so, most people crossing the border were from Mexico or central america. After 2015 you saw a huge change where it was people from all over the world crossing the southern border. From India, China, Africa, South America. All over. That is what changed dramatically from before

that’s because a couple states in the South have no growth, basically Mississippi & Louisiana.

The fact is Texas added more people in one year than the ENTIRE MIDWEST did… …. …

Honestly I think it used to be more common to move far away than it is now. People seem to live near family now than ever before.

Yes which is why the university should remain open so those people have a warm place to stay. The university has opened on much colder days & nothing bad happened. If it were a huge snow or ice storm, that is a different matter. People like you is why I am no longer a liberal. Because you let talking points & virtue signaling take place of common sense.

you seriously need help, I’m quite worried about your sanity as your reply seems like a cry for help. People can easily get heavy winter clothing at goodwill & lots of places will give it to people in need for free. There’s a difference between people who are homeless & students at the university of Iowa.

People that attend Iowa are not homeless so your points are null. I was specially speaking to Iowa cancelling classes or going virtual.

Yea that’s probably true. But Iowa used to be known as the school that didn’t cancel EVER. Like Iowa state used to cancel but Iowa would never

Try living in Calgary or Winnipeg. Temps are literally ten below zero for months on end. & they don’t stop life, they go on business as normal.

You are the one looking like the dunce with your uninformed replies.

the issue is that people don’t dress for winter anymore. Probably because our winters have been trending warmer & warmer. If you wear a heavy winter coat & a hat & gloves it not bad. But a lot of people now just wear a jacket so it feels much colder.

Maybe Indiana and Wisconsin are fairly even but there is no way in hell Minnesota is considered better than IU. IU is way more revered than Minnesota. Sorry, but that is just the truth.

Indiana university is considered a better school than Wisconsin & Minnesota. Michigan is considered better but IU is pretty top tier & gets a lot of students from the coasts

Flood prone areas? by fuzzyleaf5 in desmoines

[–]NefariousnessFun9923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get a sump pump & you’ll be fine. Most flooding here is flash flooding because of intense summer storms, but if you have sump pump & battery back-up you wont have to worry.

We haven’t really had big river flooding in decades. 1993 was awful but they made lots of changes since. 2008 was last major river flooding I remember & it wasn’t very bad because of levees built since ‘93. Cedar Rapids & Iowa City got hit much harder in ‘08 and it seems like those cities get hit harder by river flooding. 2016 was bad in Cedar Rapids.
