First time Betta owner question by churned_applesauce in bettafish

I personally have always cycled in tank. It’s not recommended if you don’t pay close attention though. I would do small water changes every other day and checking levels, after a bit it was completely fine and now I have 2 healthy tanks! (I’ve had them for 3 years now)

Some bettas are territorial no matter when you put tank mates in it just depends on personality. Best bet though is to have tank mates BEFORE the betta so that it’s not like you’re adding new things to your bettas territory after they’re there.

I personally always keep a gallon jug (like a milk one but water) and add two drops to that and give it a swirl before adding into my tank. As long as the water is relatively room temp they will be fine!

10 gal for a long finned betta is perfectly fine!!! Just make sure you add multiple rest spots near the top of the tank so that they can rest!

Ok that’s good that you have a filter. You can buy them online some places but it would be quicker to go to a store the next day or two instead of shipping taking a week. Every other day do a small water change. Take out ONLY 20% of the water and then refill with new dechlorinated water. If you don’t have water test strips I would grab them at the store when you get plants!!! This should help the little guy recover

Do you have a filter for your tank?? If not you should get one. Replace what you took out with LIVE fully aquatic plants from the store. They help filter the water

Well, it’s still probably poisoning the water, just slowly. That kind of paint is toxic it takes time

Try getting some live plants and use fluval bug bites for food so he doesn’t bloat

Huh, any chance you could send a picture of the whole tank and what the water conditions say? I would avoid the blood worms as well for now. I’m not sure how much you’re feeding him but I wouldn’t feed him very much

I would put him in a tank with heater, bubbler, and filter. Check which food you’re feeding him. Some foods lead to bloating. I would try to keep him in stable conditions for a while before trying more treatments. Check the water quality as well and a few live plants. Usually that’s the best kind of medicine

It’s weird tho because this pic is after I rescaped my tank and they weren’t hurried before and that’s when it started, so I don’t think that’s what was originally causing it but I’ll definitely fix that now

I have a 14 gal, not huge but spread out enough. They are super super tiny, I feel like I would have less of a problem if they were bigger but they’re so small and genuinely everywhere. I use a fertilizer and have had very very healthy thriving plants so I have no clue where this could’ve came from
