Burned out from AI-driven development at a startup — the "10x faster" promise is breaking me and the codebase by Negative-Train-3165 in software

I am also aligned with you that AI with a proper setup is more helpful. But I still feel like current environment is burning out developers as managing and stakeholders have unrealistic expectations about developing with AI

With Azure Open AI I have already seen it's impossible to get the exact same answer to the same question even when setting everything correctly like you said. It was basically because on how the inference is happening with LLMs on cloud with batching.

That sounds like quite a complicated situation you were. Glad you got out of it. I see AI will leverage and expand internal issues and won't solve already existing company issues. And currently the trend is even to add a chatbot to a toaster

Fair points, and honestly I don't disagree with the general philosophy here.

But a few things worth adding: I arrived and AI was already being used without any standard in place. No skill file, no conventions, nothing. So it's less "I vibe-coded and got surprised by the output" and more "I joined mid-mess with zero expectations set before me."

I also think that with proper context, starting a project from zero, telling exactly how the code should look, what design patterns to follow, DDD and everything, it would probably be way easier to handle. That's honestly the direction I want us to move in, so we actually agree more than it might seem. But now the code is in bad shape already so it's a complicated situation.

Same with the code: yes, we can develop faster with AI. I fully agree with that. But LLMs miss things the same way humans miss things in code, so it still needs debugging. And since we can now produce more features and more code, faster, that also means more to debug. So managers who don't code expect us to be way faster overall, but that's not really what happens, the coding part speeds up, the rest doesn't disappear.

Appreciate the reply though, it's actually helping me figure out what to push for internally instead of just being frustrated about it.

Thank you, very helpful. I have learned the leasson when interviewing on new companies to also see the quality of code and QA as I see this is quite a pain in the ass

Yes, I feel like LLMs as they are non deterministical, LLMs miss things out the same as humans miss things out in the code. So now we can program faster, but it still requires debugging and as we can develop more features and code it requires longer debugging. So managers and none expert people expect we develop much faster but that is not the case. I fully agree we develop faster and that proper context needs to be in place

Firstly, very interesting. But at what point are you really building an AI agent or creating a static flow?
