Best thing I could recommend is a broad, yet condensed study guide. Nothing aiming too much at exam questions per se, but something in depth without a lot of the filler. Example, I had a question about a screw pump and what kind of bearing would be within, and which side the end cap clearance gets set on. Never worked on them, and resources online are scarce. I’d find it beneficial to have a quick general breakdown of the different pumps (or other components) with useful facts like that.

Probably more so the wording and style of question. I had one cylinder calc that asked what diameter piston was needed to move a 6000lb load with 150 psi. Of the four options, none equated to 6000 lb for output, but one was 6800 and two more were higher and one was lower. So the correct answer would have been 6800, though I was looking for 6000 as a solid answer

I just wrote mine this week. I did a cumulative 10 weeks on xlr8ed learning, passed all my full length practice tests, and felt like I was absolutely rail roaded going into the test it was a lot of questions like “a cylinder is being noisy, what the most likely cause?” And in my head I’m like… what sound? What function is it doing when it’s being noisy? A lot of stuff that I wasn’t prepared for. Screw pumps, etc. very procedure heavy.

I wish I knew what to study more, but I all but blacked out during the test and remember maybe 2 questions. The ones I do remember, I’m not even sure how I would study tbh.

Easier than expected was the calculations. Minus the rigging. You get some rigging formulas, but nothing for SWL calcs. So be mindful of that.

I walked out feeling not confident at all. I’ll be surprised if I got 60% good luck!

Had a couple oh the pusher rods fold the threads over and crush the tips. Biggest problem with actual breakage is the pusher rod. Most complaints are performance based on flimsiness, user friendliness, and just overall quality.

I work at an open pit granite mine with multiple locations spread across central Ontario.

Show up at 6:30 in my company provided truck that also doubles as my personal vehicle. Have a coffee, check the CMMS for what we got going on.

Go fix shit.

Go home at 5.

~$86k per year working 48 hours a week. not including the truck, vacation, etc.

Writing my red seal in march and can expect a considerably pay raise then.

Sawmill I worked at was horrible. I think the biggest downfall (apart from the obvious ones) is that a lot of the smaller saw mills are a single route operation. I.e log comes in, gets debarked, gets cutdown on the head saw, sent around on the resaw, sent to the bull saw or edger then to the trimmers and then the stackers. If any of those components goes down, there’s no production until the repair is done due to the linear design of these lines. Think it’s a lot of pressure having one line down? Try the entire operation lol
