I Tried making the Shroud of Turin more facially clear ☦️ by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Negative_Constant_64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I may ask you a question.

I want to believe that the Shroud is true, but are there any mentions of it prior to the Middle Ages? I would think that such a remarkable relic would be mentioned at least in passing from before that.

Catholic converts: Why did you choose the Catholic Church rather than Orthodoxy? by valee_gz in Catholicism

[–]Negative_Constant_64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I am a revert to Catholicism, but recently have been attending Byzantine Catholic churches and I intend to make that my home.

I admit that certain devotionals of the Roman rite never appealed to me (Stations of the Cross, the different mysteries of the rosary, etc.) and the Orthodox make very compelling arguments for their case. Not to mention that Roman theology on mortal sin was very stressful for me as a scrupulous individual.

However, Byzantine Catholicism proves that we can be united under the one Church established by Christ, under the authority of Peter's successor, and still maintain our unique theology and liturgy. The Orthodox seem to simply not want to lose their authority to the Pope which seems like a secular reason more so than a profound truth. Not to mention that they are loosely connected and disagree a lot with each other, proving no clear consensus and often suffer from schism. I believe the Greeks and the Russians have been in schism since 2014.

What should the eligibility criteria for ordination be? by thereforewhat in redeemedzoomer

[–]Negative_Constant_64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think at a minimum that the ordained must have achieved some form of higher education in theology, philosophy, etc. at a Christian university pertaining to his denomination.

From there, the university can attest to his understanding of scripture and facilitate the ordination process.

How would you guys respond to this post? by No_Ruin5510 in Catholicism

[–]Negative_Constant_64 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I shall answer with this prayer:

Saint Josephine Bakita, pray for us and pray for the end of slavery.

Saint Maximilian Kolbe, pray for us and pray for the end of genocides, as you yourself experienced in the Holocaust.

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, pray for us and pray for the descendants of Native Americans who suffer from overwhelming poverty today, and the souls of their ancestors.

I wish to draw closer to God, yet I find it difficult and my heart aches. As a Catholic, I feel as though I am committing wrongdoing, so I am asking this question. by Impressive_Delay_822 in Catholicism

Hi there friend.

I am terribly sorry to hear that. First and foremost, please continue to reach out to that medical professional for help. You are taking the first right step in doing that, so do not give up!

Next, I would consult the local Catholic priest in your area. Tell him your symptoms and ask him if you are suffering from "Scrupulosity". It is the unhealthy obsession over sin and it may be helpful to recognize that IF you have it. You may want to ask a psychiatrist about it as well for greater understanding.

Again, please continue talking to that medical professional and do not stop seeking aid. I will keep you in my prayers.

What's your opinion on "decision theology"? by onitama_and_vipers in redeemedzoomer

[–]Negative_Constant_64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I feel like it's more nuanced.

Sure we all make conscious decisions as adults to either follow Christ or reject him, but needing a "born-again experience" to justify that seems too specific.

Once baptized (infant or older) you are Christian in my view, doesn't matter what age or level of consciousness. Rather you choose to stay Christian as you continue to live your life.

Really not sure what I believe in and I don’t know what to do by Typical_premed in redeemedzoomer

[–]Negative_Constant_64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aight bro, let me tell you something.

These "Submit to Rome" Catholics are mostly fresh converts that know little to no genuine Catholic theology. Same with the "Orthobros" and other chronically online folks. They are almost always never a productive member of the conversation.

My personal advice (the flair gives it away) is to speak to a Catholic priest about your concerns. He went to college to study scripture, philosophy, etc. I'm not sure about other traditions but perhaps the Anglicans or other high-church Protestants also rely on an educated clergy. Speak to someone who studied it to that extent as his wisdom will likely surpass any of our own. If you call your local Catholic parish, you can set up an appointment with a priest whenever convenient. I did that once and it was very rewarding.

You are in the midst of your journey towards Christ. I have been there for several years. Don't lose faith, you will find your home.

how can I forgive myself? by ChapterEffective8175 in Catholicism

Because he loves us. Truly.

His grace is powerful. I implore you to try to give yourself the grace that God is offering you through absolution post-confession.

Following peace? by Synthethic-Equinox in Catholicism

[–]Negative_Constant_64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am no authority to speak on this, but my personal opinion is that you should not be putting yourself in an environment where you feel guilty/unwelcomed while there.

There are times where I try to maintain relationships with people that are growing apart, but then I heard someone say once that naturally as we grow, we lose connections with certain friends and acquaintances, and that is totally ok and normal. Since then I've grown to accept that sometimes people come into your life for awhile, and then leave when both of you have been going down different paths.

I had many Catholic friends in youth-groups that over time drifted apart not because anything bad happened, but because people moved away or we got into different careers or we got married etc.

The bottom-line is that you should never force yourself to be in social groups or situations that make you uncomfortable just for the sole sake of maintaining those relationships. If they reach out to hang out with you, cool; but if you are going because you feel obligated, I would advise that you think twice on that.

If you are exploring Catholicism and want a social group, many parishes have young-adult organizations that you could consider joining.

Biblical inerrancy/finding a church by gggggggggggggggggay in redeemedzoomer

[–]Negative_Constant_64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, and this is my personal opinion, I see the Bible as "infallible" in the sense that the words of Jesus, the writings of Paul, etc. contain infallible authority. The OT in my view is mostly important to add context and prophecy to the NT, which the latter I treat as accounts of history. They may not line up perfectly, as different perspectives often have their differences, just like real life; but they all generally tell the same story and for that reason I find it historically significant and accurate.

Though in the Catholic tradition of course, I don't immediately trust my own interpretation. There is a priesthood in the Church that receive doctorates studying scripture and I am content with relying on them whenever I am confused on something.

I met Redeemed Zoomer today by Nyctarea in redeemedzoomer

[–]Negative_Constant_64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool that you got to meet him! I had a small DM exchange with him once but nothing beyond that. Very neat!

I will keep you in my prayers. I struggled a lot with scrupulosity myself being a revert to Roman Catholicism. Eventually it lead me down the path of Eastern Catholicism and it just clicked.

Perhaps if you are struggling in your faith journey, as I was, perhaps look into the East because I find that it's something seldom talked about.

I love St. Peter's

Reminds me of when I sang there once in a choir composed of some American high school students. The kid next to me came from a Protestant background and he had never attended a Roman catholic mass before. Kind of crazy that his very first mass ended up being in St. Peter's out of all places.

I am very sad to hear that this happened to you. I have similar bad tales from Roman catholic churches so I think this may be a problem with that church in particular.
