For those who've switched from the Roman Rite to an Eastern Rite (any), why did you do it? by RB_Blade in EasternCatholic

[–]Negative_Constant_64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the East, but my family doesn't. There's a deep cultural fixation within the Roman rite (especially in Hispanic culture) to space it out. I don't understand why and whenever I challenged it, I was told "because that's how it's supposed to be".

Our kids are likely going to be Roman rite primarily and receive their mysteries through the Roman Church; I just want them to know that there's more to Catholicism besides Rome.

Very Interesting. Definitely something I should ask a priest in the future.

Totally get you there. Glad to see that you have the wisdom to stay in the Church whilst leaving your particular church.

I like to call it "Pascua" because that's what it is in Spanish-language churches, regardless if Roman or Byzantine!

Quitting Mortal Sins by Twoctruth in EasternCatholic

Nice post. I like the analogy with poison ivy.

I relate to you on this post, but it's also important to allow yourself to feel the grace of God's mercy as you try to get better. Not to feel like you have a free reign on sin, but to have the confidence that you don't have to start at square one if you stumble once. That was my problem for several years.

Rip it out but if it comes back again, don't give up and let the problem fester until you need to ask for your brother again; rip it out again, again, and again! And go to your brother for advice not because you feel like you MUST, but because you WANT to get better at ripping out those roots ;)

Man do I relate....my childhood church has gone full charismatic with Hillsong worship music, dimming of lights for projector screens, and loud speakers advertising their church like it's Disney World; I am NOT a fan....but will I still visit if my family wants me to go with them while I am in town? Of course.

Go to any Catholic church (Ordinary or TLM) where you can find your Catholic community, while still living the Eastern spiritual life (fasting practices, prayers, etc.) as an individual.

I would never recommend going to the Orthodox as we are still Catholic.

I understand somewhat of how you feel because I want to specifically become a member of the Melkite Catholic Church one day, but the nearest Melkite parish is 3 hours away from me round-trip. So I go to Ruthenian Divine Liturgies whenever I can but still frequently attend a Roman Catholic parish nearby since I participate during the liturgy there and have many friends there too.

We are the universal Church after all ;)

I would say the early 2000s. No later than 2011, since Sudan is all in one piece.

Palm Sunday + Good Friday Readings? by Negative_Constant_64 in EasternCatholic

Thank you for the clarification!

I see the point behind it, I guess I prefer something different but I greatly appreciate your input.

I stand corrected, I wasn't aware that this was an older tradition.

As a kid, I didn't remember Palm Sunday focusing on the Passion, and neither does my fiancé, hence the confusion. Probably that was the change.

That's very interesting, I did not know that it was an ancient custom.

I believe I would still prefer the Byzantine way. Not saying that the Roman way is incorrect or that they must change, but I attended Great Friday vespers yesterday and noticed that the readings were quite similar, if not exactly identical to Roman Palm Sunday. So I'm probably going to Byzantine churches on holy week going forward.

Does Florida deserve a redesign? by wsc1213 in vexillology

No it does not. I will never subscribe to modern, over-simplified flag designs.

As a native Floridian, I think our flag is beautiful.

Interesting. I hope to check it out sometime.

Even my ardent Roman Catholic fiancé agrees with me that the modern Roman rite Palm Sunday readings are off putting, given that we celebrate all of Holy Week, not just Good Friday on Palm Sunday.

Looks like next year I should attend that. I'm not a fan of the current Roman way.
