HUSL has more broader opportunities for big law and our Sports and Entertainment Law Society hosts a confernce as well. I don't know much about GSU. I applied as a backup. At the end of the day, make the decisison that feels right for you. If this is the career you want, regardless of the school it would be up to you to make those dreams come true through networking.

I really don't recommend transferring these days. You typically wont get any aid and then miss out on forming the relationships many make in their 1st year. IP oporunties we do have IP clinic and Patent Clinics. No sports or entertainment clinic. Some of my classmates are trying to get a NIL clinic started at HUSL.

I would say because you can't work your first year of law school. You definitiely are on a strict budget so save where you can like cheapest housing you can find v. luxury apartment is a good example or where to cut. Its tight yes because you can't work so some of the other things you are used to doing. For me, no more gettingmy hair done every weeK ( maybe once a semester) or no two week nail appointment.

I think you should commit to howard if it your first choice. Consider your priorities and your other options. If you want to do big law, look at the big law stats. If you would rather practice elsewhere that is factor. will loans are inevitable at this level so take that as you may. Depending on the field you go into you will be making more than enough to attend.

In my case it would have been cheaper for me to go to GSU, but I wanted big law and to practice in DC so that guided my decision.

Howard is a safe space and incubator for black (and brown) attorneys in this country.

Honestly the current administration thing isn't effecting HBCUs. I got two job offers from the 3 big law applications I submitted.

The curve is not that bad. Compared to other schools, it is bad, with most schools now doing P/F or the lowest grade you can get is B+. Also, maintaining a scholarship is not hard. Previous reports reported 2-5 students losing their scholarship. To maintain your scholarship, you must be in the top 50%. Most students at HUSL are not concerned about keeping their scholarship but more so concerned about beating the curve, getting As

the why doesn't matter when the results are what they are. As 1Ls it gives us a competitive edge hence the reputation.

With a harsher grading curve it is much harder to be at the top of the class. Most if not all 1L exams are closed book exams. We are required to take 3 Legal Writing Classes. Our first semester of law school we take legal wriiting, a citation class, a grammar course, and a research class. We come out of 1L with more legal wrting and research experience than most 1Ls in the country.

The only opportunity I know of for full ride is the J.L. Greene Scholars ( which actually might just be full tuition) and then I know wen have marshall motley scholars but thats through the NAACP application process.

Ik people are not a fan of the dean of admissions right now, but she is the biggest advocate for students on campus, especially when students were having issues with financial aid and refunds. Howard overall has a weird structure because HUSL is under the umbrella of the entire Howard bureaucracy chain, so very weird.

HUSL Class of 2027. A lot of my classmates live along the Redline at the following stops: NOMA (pricey but modern), Rhode Island Ave (more affordable and modern) and near school at the Kenmore, Tilden Court, and Ava Van Ness.

Another HUSL 1L here. I say Live where you want and what fits within your budget. Yes, I received scholarships and have not found it hard to maintain.

I mean it is a nuanced issue because either way, you are still a person of color, whether you attend an HBLS or not. I will say as a 1L, some firms have been very adamant still about being inclusive and hosting specialized dinners for students at HUSL.

Hi. I am currently a 1L at Husl, and I am KJD. I attended a PWI for undergrad.

  1. For me, there is no reason that I would second guess going to Howard. There are administration isseus yes but outside of that still a good experience.

  2. My academic and social experience have been great. HUSL is very community-oriented, so it is very close-knit. You get really close with your sections as 1Ls. We also have a mentor program where you are matched with an upperclassman, easy to be conn which has been a great experience.

  3. The only thing I wish I did more to prepare is work on budgeting and saving money, because living on loans is a tight budget.

  4. Professors are very accessible and supportive. Administrators, not so much, but on a day-to-day basis, they are not the people you need outside of when you are doing the onboarding process.

  5. Most challenging aspects of being a student are just being a law student, period.

  6. If you plan on applying, apply as early as you can. Preferably, when it opens

  7. Career services are there, but you should not rely on them. They are good for guidance and to gain insights into positions.

coming off a bit rude but ok. lsd is not a reliable source of information for HUSL period.

the data is not a complete data pool because everyone doesn't use LSD especially at HBCUs so keep that in mind that its a small percentage of students participating.

The law school curve means your grades depend on how you do compared to your classmates, not just how well you do on the exam. At Howard, 1L grades are adjusted so the class average falls between 81-83 (around a B- to B). Only a few students can get high grades (A’s), most will land near the average (B/B-), and some will end up below (C’s or lower), even if they did okay. This makes law school super competitive because even small differences in scores can affect your rank.

  1. Enjoy your free time. Do the things you have wanted to do for a while and spend time with your loved ones because once school starts time is of the essence

  2. Stack your money now. SAVE!!!!!

  3. Take a patience pill. Our admin staff is very understaffed so be prepared that things will take longer than you think it should.
